Blogathon: Life, Love and the Movies

MyFilmviewsand Karamel Kinema started a very cool blogathon, which consists of 16 movie-related questions.

1. What was the first movie you saw in the cinema and what do you remember about that visit?

I remember seeing The Lion King and half of people crying when main lion's dad died. That's as specific as I can be.

2. Are there any movies you have very strong memories of which are not because of the movie (for example something which happened at the time you were watching it)?

They are, but there is no way for me to write that story.

But I'll give you another one - I was watching Hannibal with my friend and the face of Gary Oldman in this movie is the scariest shit ever. I went to the toilet, came back and my friend pause it on the shot of his face to scare me. Horrific.
3. Which movies had a big impact on you and changed a (small) part of your view on life?

Frida really filled me in optimism. Fuck the obstacles, just do your thing.

4. Do you have any comfort movies which you return to because you are in a specific mood (for example if you are feeling down/nursing a heartbreak)?

I watch In the Loop no matter what mood I'm in. I also watch Jonah Hill comedies because they are so funny. I love Superbad so damn much. Seth Rogen's films are hilarious too, especially Zack and Miri Make a Porno. So apparently my idea of entertainment is a comedy with lots of swearing.
5. If a movie would be made about your life, what type of a movie would it be and who would you like to portray you?

They're doing it - it's called Crimson Peak and apparently Jessica Chastain is playing me. Seriously, though, it would probably be a cross between really cute romantic comedy and some real disturbing Blue Jasmine/Fight Club-style self destruction. I would like someone I actually like to portray me and I've been told I kinda look like Michelle Williams so that's good (I have dark hair so I colored her cool character's hair from I'm not There above). Also - Tom Hiddleston should star as my love interest. Because I really want him to.

6. Which existing movie best represents you?

Well, let's see - half-heartedly doing my job, being annoyed with people, awful at driving, loving dogs and not being a big fan of crying babies, drinking....that would be Young Adult.
7. If you knew you would die tomorrow, what would be the last movie you would want to see?

Probably In the Loop or Snatch. At least I'd die laughing.

8. If you can spend your life working in the film industry, what would you be and why?

Game of Thrones producer. Why? Look at this blog.

9. Did you ever have a first kiss with someone while at the cinema and if so which movie was playing?

I don't recall (Wolf of Wall Street Style).

10. What is your favorite movie relationship and why?

I think Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in You've Got Mail. Because they connected through conversation and as long as you keep talking, as long as there is connection, love doesn't go away.
11. When did your love for movies start and how has it grown?

It probably started when I saw Moulin Rouge! on the big screen. Then I went through all of Nicole Kidman's movies. To this day when I love the actor, I'll watch everything with him/her in it.

12. If you have to choose one film to watch with your loved one, what would it be and why?

I always show my friends funny comedies. It's important to laugh as much as you can.
13. If you can choose one character from a movie to be your significant other who would it be and why?

Loki. He's hot, charismatic and he doesn't give a shit.

14. What was the first movie that made you fall in love with film and cinema?

That's kinda the same answer as 11, but the first movie I really, really loved was The Others.

15. How did your passion for movies turn you into a movie blogger?

I started reviewing movies in high school, then I started winning awards for the reviews + I was always very active on various movie message boards on the net. So I thought, hey let's have a decent place for my reviews. It's more than 2 years later - and it's still here.

16. What is your favorite date from a movie?

It's not really a date and it's an awful movie, but I really liked the scene from Friends with Benefits where Mila Kunis took Justin Timberlake up on the roof at nighttime and they were lying there, watching the sky. I love big cities, outdoors and night sky.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Martin Scorsese's outrageous new film The Wolf Wall Street is the director's return to formula known from films such as Goodfellas and Casino. A story of crime, money and ultimate consequences. Or in this case - perhaps a lack of them?

All of that supposedly really happened - the titular wolf is Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio, in most challenging role to date) - a stock broker with great skills and ambitions. Jordan uses his skills to build his company - he sells shitty stocks to people, which thanks to provisions makes him filthy rich. Jordan loves his life, surrounded by beautiful women, debauchery and luxury. But since most of what he does is illegal, very soon FBI starts chasing after him.
In the film's opening that takes you right to the middle of debauchery, Jordan gives us a tour of his life - big house, tons of drugs, his beautiful wife giving him a blow job in his Ferrari. And then we go back. We go back to the time Jordan was just at the beginning. A young kid on Wall Street, with an ordinary wife, ordinary life and with eagerness to get rich and live the dream. What dream? Everyone's dream.

I loved that whole opening. It's incredibly crucial too - during his first day Jordan meets Mark Hanna (brilliant Matthew McConaughey, who is simply exploding with primal energy). Hanna's whole philosophy is something that will shape Jordan. Earn money for yourself, not your clients. Do drugs. Jack off. Greed, drugs and sex. This is the new road for Jordan.
Pretty soon the firm in which Jordan works closes. He is forced to look for another job. Because of how good he is at what he does, he starts new company with his odd new friend Donnie Azoff (splendidly cast and brilliant Jonah Hill). The company makes tons of money, Jordan brings in hookers and booze to his firm and his charisma keeps bringing in new people to work there as well as new clients. The word about the Wolf of Wall Street spreads like a wildfire.

Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly obsessed with playing Jordan Belfort since getting a hold of the book (on which the movie is based on) back in 2007, DiCaprio has been focused on turning the depraved tale of Belfort into a film. He wasn't just interested in this story's connection to the most recent collapse on Wall Street, he was also attracted to Jordan's honest and uncompromising portrayal of what he actually experienced. Years later, DiCaprio's dream came true.
The Wolf of Wall Street is first and foremost a hugely entertaining movie. Not only is it expertly timed and well made, it's also hilarious. From genuinely brilliant and funny dialogues to amazing situational humour, this film is one of the funniest films Scorsese has ever made. There are scenes here that immediately shoot this movie up to the cult classic status. I dare you to watch Jordan's crawl to his car and not laugh. I double dare you.

Another thing is that because nobody involved holds any punches the film's wild and immoral atmosphere sucks you right in. For 3 hours, you are in the zone. Hookers, drugs, money, greed - you are right there with Jordan and his merry group of party boys witnessing the crazy shit that they do. And it's an absolute blast.
In spite of the film's long run time it's never boring - there are few glitches like Jordan's speeches to his employees that went for a tad too long, but in the grand scheme of things it's a very minor flaw. The film uses so many interesting techniques - because of cleverly put flashbacks it gets even more laughter from the audience and because of planned continuity errors and little tricks (like when Jordan is on top of the stairs and he sees more steps than there actually are) it does hell of a job portraying Jordan's clouded state of mind.

This is a film that should be getting attention because of how good it is, but as usual there are those who are professionally outraged. There are people out there, who I swear, behave as if this movie invented hookers and drugs. You do realize those are out there, right? It's a true story so why blame Scorsese for featuring naked chicks and tons of blow? I'll never understand prudes. What a sad life they must have when a pair of bare breasts leaves them catatonic with shock.
Another thing I keep hearing is that the film glamorizes drug use and debauchery. Guess what? It doesn't need to glamorize it. Everyone knows that the kind of life style Jordan has an appeal on its own. You don't need a freaking movie to think that. You tell me you wouldn't want to have all that money, cars and houses? Right. Simply telling a story of rich criminal is not necessarily an approval of it.

I'm kinda glad so many people had issues with understanding the ending because if they got it, that would give them more ammo to fire at this movie. In the film's ballsy and poignant ending, Jordan is a speaker during a seminar. He gives the people there only one thing to do - sell him a pen. One by one they try but fail - they lack the skill, confidence, charisma, charm. They lack the things Jordan was blessed with.
This is why it doesn't really matter how much time Jordan spent in prison, or how much money was confiscated from him. Sure, his jail sentence was outrageous - what was it? 2 years? - but no matter how long he is gonna be there - 5, 10, 15 years, he's gonna get out and continue to be who he has become. He is a greedy, money hungry man and unlike most of the people in the world he is blessed with traits and skills that enable him to make that money.

The people in the final shot, the shot that lingers, are average. They look tired, sad, desperate for change. They dream of a better life - life of beauty and luxury. But they will never have it because they lack the natural skills Jordan has. Scorsese doesn't tell people to go and con. I mean come on, likely even if you want to, you lack what it takes to actually succeed. He just let's you observe. And it's a sad reality we all live in. This film isn't amoral. The world is. I don't believe human nature has anything coded into it. But you live long enough, some things seep through your soul. Just look at this poor agent after he caught Jordan - he is still living his shitty life, even though he is the good guy and Jordan will most likely continue to make more and more money.
I myself was shocked only handful of times. Nudity and swearing don't have any impression on me neither does heavy partying or drug use. But there were some moments that made me go 'oh, they went there'. It was a moment when Jordan elbowed his wife in the stomach during the argument scene and the whole 'how to not get sued by little people' conversation. I didn't think it was over the line but it definitely made me a bit uncomfortable.

But getting back to the story and not the controversy, you gotta appreciate how well done this movie is. There are several sequences that are just masterful - the scene on the yacht with Jordan and FBI guys is just wonderful. The Lemmon 714 scene is already legendary. And then there are all those little gems - like Jordan being annoyed with his banker, played by incredibly charming Jean Dujardin. The running gag with Dujardin continuously using French language was improvised and partly true because of him having difficulty with English. The hysterical phone conversation with him yelling at DiCaprio to come to Switzerland at once was almost completely improvised by Dujardin and DiCaprio.
The cast is all for the craziness - I don't think I've ever seen more demanding performance from DiCaprio. The things he does here - from having a candle up his ass to moaning like an animal while high and desperately trying to communicate his thoughts - are mind blowing. He is funny, genuine and devoted. I liked his performance especially because of the inclusion of that lunch scene with McConaughey in which Jordan is such an innocent kid - look at him being all humble and grateful. And then he becomes such a beast. The contrast is startling.

Jonah Hill simply fucking deserves respect. He is a guy who can make people laugh but he is also the guy who can sell any character, even one as crazy as Donnie. He never let's DiCaprio overshadow him and he is a delight to watch. Apparently he only got 60,000$ for the role - that's how much he wanted to work with Scorsese. Newcomer Margot Robbie is amazing as Naomi, Jordan's second, sexy wife - her character was extremely interesting. She knew her worth, she new the way to get in and the way to get out. When Jordan tries to get a hold of her by saying 'they know you have nothing to do with this' she responds calmly and unimpressed 'I know'. When Naomi decided the fun was over, she just bailed. And can you blame her?
Because here is another remarkable thing about the movie. Jordan is a shit. He knows he is shity, he knows he is a degenerate, he knows he is an addict and he knows that what he is doing is something people would call criminal. But I wasn't thinking 'oh, I hate this guy' even for a second. DiCaprio and Scorsese make Jordan so fun to watch you have no time to think that. Even when he rats out the people of his own firm to save his sorry ass you are still so enthralled in the film you have no energy left to actively root against him.

Another reason I have respect for Scorsese for what he did in this film is because of that whole wire scene. I mean Scorsese doesn't waste time on making sure everyone knows what happened - he leaves it for the audience to figure out, just like with the ending. Jordan shows Donnie a yellow note saying that he is wearing a wire. And this is one of the many reasons Jonah Hill is my win for supporting actor - look at the look on his face. He isn't scared. He isn't freaked out. He is hurt. He is hurt because Jordan is ratting out the people he made them believe were like his family.
I'm sure there are people there saying - but hey, he helped them. He helped that lady he mentions during his speech. But what good did it do if in the end 'he gave them everyone'? He took from the rich, sure, but he didn't do it for some great purpose. As he himself said it, he took their money because he knew how to spend it better. And that's OK. There doesn't need to be any message here, but for me the ending I mentioned above was very telling.

Not only is that one of the better Scorsese movies I've seen (I think it's my second favorite of his, right after Casino) but the cast is absolutely amazing - apart from DiCaprio, McConaughey (that primal chant is apparently something he does before scenes to warm up and DiCaprio, upon noticing it, convinced him to use it in the scene), Dujardin, Robbie and Hill there is hilarious Rob Reiner as Jordan's father, Joanna Lumley as Naomi's aunt - never had I seen this much sex expressed by person's eyes  - no wonder DiCaprio got so nervous kissing her, they needed to do the scene 27 times - and Kyle Chandler, admittedly a weak link, still pretty good as FBI agent that's after Jordan.
The script is so wonderful even tiny performances - like Aya Cash's hilarious assistant ("Yeah, go fuck your cousin") or Shea Whigham's captain Ted - are extremely memorable. Hell, even real-life Jordan Belfort appears - in a brief role in the film's final scene, introducing his cinema stand-in Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Wolf of Wall Street is an amazing ride - great acting, awesome script, masterful execution and bitchin' soundtrack. You have something like American Hustle - quite simply an imitation - and you have the real deal in Oscar race this year - The Wolf of Wall Street. Hell, it's like vitamin B and the white lady. Why go for fake when movies like this one are still getting made? And thank God, I mean Scorsese, they are.

  • Those are from Hannibal season 2 trailer (here). Frustrated, out of breath Mads Mikkelsen in a bloody shirt is everything.
  • Scream Queen Katharine Isabelle has been cast as Margot Verger in season 2. This is so great. I wonder how they will portray her character.
  • The song playing the background of the trailer which is the rendition of Stand by Me is one of the 5 songs playing in the background of this fine site. It's that magical bar at the top. You can pause it if you don't like it. Other songs are Money Chant and  Meth Lab Zoso Sticker from The Wolf of Wall Street, Stealing Motor from Mud and Feral Love from Game of Thrones 4 trailer.
  • Somebody stop Tom Hiddleston
  • No, wait.
  • Don't.
  • Ladies and gentlemen, Margot Robbie:
  • She will play Jane in new Tarzan movie. Alexander Skarskard is playing Tarzan. If When these two have a sex scene together we will all feel horny. And then really inadequate.
  • While we are on that subject, here's the picture of Alex reading naked on the toilet in the middle of Antarctica, which I've been forgetting to include in this series for 2 weeks now. I don't know what the context is and I do not care.
  • American Horror Story went from being my fav season to something I don't even want to witness anymore. Ryan Murphy is such a shit writer, Jesus, half of his ideas led to nowhere and the other ones' conclusions are seriously awful.
  • I've been watching True Detective. It's really good and it may keep me occupied for several weeks until Thrones comes back.McConaughey is awesome and I absolutely adore Woody Harrelson. McConaughey's character is so great - he is fucked up but in a very unique way and he is completely unpredictable. I also adore the humour on the show. I love that their boss is played by Kevin Dunn who is super funny on Veep.
  • A lot of people bitch that the show is 'boring'. It's not boring - it's slow paced. You wanna see something boring? Try Top of the Lake. I saw the first two episodes and I was bored out of my mind. And they shoot a dog in one scene. Fuck off.
  • It's actually 15 degrees below zero here so I've been watching a lot of TV shows because I only go outside when I absolutely have to. Gustav is not happy. He celebrated his second birthday last week so he was very joyful because of all the gifts then but now he needs to wear a sweater, a coat and a scarf whenever he goes outside so he is pissed off about the inconvenience:
  • New Game of Thrones on set video (here) revealed whole bunch of amazing stuff including more glimpses of Tyrion's trial, the judges and first look at Mark Gatiss (who I gather is revered in Sherlock fanbase, yes?)
  • New Maleficent trailer is pretty good. The CGI still looks kinda odd but Angelina will make it work, right? God, I hope she can make it work. It was revealed this week that Lana Del Rey will sing a song for the movie, so at least something good will come of this. The song will be released on Sunday, so YEY.
  • I'd comment but this speaks volumes, doesn't it?:
  • But I'm gonna comment on her behaviour during SAG press conference.
  • The bitchy look on her face during the questions, overall 'I'm gracing you with my presence' attitude....no wonder she is O.Russell's muse. They match. The worst part was her looking at poor Amy Adams (who deserves a medal for staying classy) to answer her questions for her. If you don't want to answer the questions why stand in the middle next to the mike?! As for Michael Pena - nobody knows who the fuck you are so maybe you should shut up.
  • Adams and DeNiro have been in this business much longer and they can answer questions, they're polite, they joke around. But not Cooper. No, what he does is leaving everyone and just exiting the room.
  • My God...think of the mayhem happening in Fucksville right now because of them not being there.
  • btwJeremy Renner putting on smoldering eyes like it's a photoshoot during entire SAG ceremony and this disaster is hysterical.
  • Look, you don't need to be classy but at least be human. Here, people who are not arrogant monsters, in the same room:
  • And let's take a look at behaviour of 12 Years a Slave ensemble - here is Lupita and Sarah dancing together. This Oscar season should be known (apart from I'll have whatever Emma Thompson is having) as everyone wants a picture with Lupita.
  • I cannot keep up with all the Grace of Monaco news. Yesterday I read it was pulled from March release. Today I'm reading it's gonna open Cannes film festival. Is it good? Is it bad? What the fresh hell is going on?
  • Sarah Paulsonwill star in new Todd Haynes' movie opposite Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. I'm so happy for her.
  • Playlist reports about the new addition to that Agents of Shield TV series. I do not watch it but they got Elena Satine, who is so, so very beautiful to play "Asgardian goddess (and occasional accomplice to Loki) Lorelei". Why the fuck can't they include her in Thor movies and give us and Tom Hiddleston something to enjoy? I want to see Loki get laid. He has been through so much.
  • Some gems related to Golden Globes, Here is Martin Scorsese after the “supermodel vagina” joke:
  • And here is Clooney's response to Amy and Tina:
  • Check out his shirt too, this man is so precious.
  • Staying on the subject of the big stars, Charlize Theron is dating Sean Penn. I have no idea what is going there. Looks? No. Money? She has her own money. Personality? Please. Has Penn sold his soul to the Devil and the Devil said 'go forth and you shall be a dick all your life but you will bang beautiful women who will be inexplicably attracted to you?". I think that's exactly what happened.
  • Speaking of horrible life choices Johnny Depp took his middle life crisis to another level and is now engaged to Amber Heard. Congratulations, Amber. You finally figured out how to catch a break and become just a little bit more famous.

Jack from the awesome Lights Camera Reaction came up with a very fun idea - what if you could recast some roles from 2013? So he asked us to choose 3 and write why would that actor do a better job. You can still join in and I must say most of the ideas people have so far are like 10x better than what we actually saw in those movies.

Charlize Theron as Malkinain The Counselor
    replacing Cameron Diaz

Let's pretend for a second that The Counselor is not an awful movie. I know, I know - it's almost impossible to do, but let's try.  Malkina is the film's most interesting aspect and the character was mercilessly butchered (as were my high expectations) by confused, lost and ill suited for the part Cameron Diaz. But take someone like Charlize Theron, who never gives bad performances (I liked her in Snow White and the Huntsman and Prometheus, so you can just save the energy and not mention those in 'what about...?' question that I sense is coming in the comments section) and the film, while still awful, I'm sure, would at least have one mesmerizing performance. Not to mention Javier Bardem's mouth would probably never close after witnessing that car moment.

Tom Hiddleston as Charlie in Stoker
    replacing Matthew Goode

Not to take away anything from Matthew Goode's brilliant work in hugely underrated Stoker, but whenever I watch this film - and I watch it a lot - I always wonder what Tom Hiddleston would do with this character. Oh, and I think he would do so much. Hiddleston can pull off mysterious and menacing very well and all that he needs to do to turn you on is just look at you. On one hand I'm glad it didn't happen because I have Only Lovers Left Alive to worry about in terms of killing me. But he is gonna play menacing, mysterious guy, who is incidentally Mia Wasikowska's husband in Crimson Peak. Win-win.

Christina Hendricks as Juniper in Mud
    replacing Reese Whiterspoon

In Mud, Matthew McConaughey plays a man who would do anything for a woman he loves, Juniper. He would die for her, he is a fugitive because of her and he can't stand being away from her. So what a disappointment when Juniper turns out to be trashy looking Reese Witherspoon. Look, she is attractive, but she is not even the most interesting and attractive female in this movie. Now, cast someone like angelic and stunning Christina Hendricks in such a role and I'd buy McConaughey going to Hell and back for her. God knows I would.

  • Woody Harrelson being freaked out by the things McConaughey says and does in True Detective is my new favorite thing in the whole world.
  • Also let me just say - if you think this show is boring or badly written take your shit taste and get out. One has to be fucked beyond comprehension to think something containing this monologue is 'badly written'.
  • So last week Alexandra Daddario showed her tits (I'm including a link here for a certain blogger) on the show and now she is number 5 on imdb starometer. To quote Fez from That 70's show that was a marvelous set of kittens. But honestly, really? Is that what it takes?
  • And also - HBO needs to cool it with female nudity, it's a bit much when a station is getting famous because women are naked on their shows.
  • Or at least they should even it out. It's been 3 episodes and Matthew is not naked. Oh, come on.
  • You know how I know nothing of even perceived relevance is happening in my country? Because stuff I consider news is actual news on TV. Today they talked about Bale's birthday and Dallas Buyers Club premiere in London. When they showed Matt me and my mother formed prayer circle of adoration around TV.
  • This is beyond adorable:
  • I've also been a very good fan of Matt and Jonah this week - I rewatched The Lincoln Lawyer and Moneyball. First one was kinda depressing - when Matt's character mention something about getting a hundred thousands dollars for a case I almost choked on my dinner. I was born in the wrong country. Or at least I'm practicing law in the wrong place.
  • Something magical happened last Saturday when Jonah Hill was hosting SNL. Leonardo DiCaprio, such a old good sport, showed up and they reenacted the iconic Titanic scene together. Aww, you guys!
  • Jonah's Her spoof as well as the dinner party sketch were hysterical. I legit cried during the latter.
  • At the end of the show when Jonah was saying thank you DiCaprio couldn't find his pocket and it was hilarious. Poor baby wanted to look cool and the pocket escaped him.
  • Martin Scorsesetalking about Jonah on Letterman was so funny. I also loved interview with Jonah - Letterman is an awful interviewer but Hill managed to tell his anecdote regardless. His impression of Leonardo's Dicaprio reaction to his plea for help was amazing.
  • I'm all caught up with The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and Parks and Recreation.. They were all pleasantly surprising as the last time I watched those they were all struggling and now they are as funny as they ever were.
  •  New Maleficent trailer is actually pretty cool. Epic stuff, Lana Del Rey's song....it may not be awful. The prosthetic cheeks Angelina is wearing are freaking the shit out of me.
  • HBO has set my ovaries on fire today and released first photos from Game of Thrones season 4:
  • Owww Sansa and Tyrion!
  • Have you guys seen this? I'm laughing so much I'm in tears:
  • The more I see and read about X Men Future Past whatever the fuck the title is, it looks like more and more like a disaster. Just look at Evan Peters. And don't you fucking dare ruin Scarlet Witch.
  • I'm actually somewhat disturbed by the footage of Tom Hiddleston's Thor screen test. It's after he put on weight? Jesus, I'd break this guy. It's important to have fear in your personal realm of fantasy.
  • It was actually a very good week for us Hiddleston fangirls. The footage of him in tight Captain America costume was released as well as the video of him behind the scenes in Coriolanus. That put me at ease because he did all those push ups and the chance of me breaking him decreased.
  • Then this Jaguar commercial showed up.
  • I think someone could actually charge him with attempted mass murder:
  • And now I'm envious of a cup of tea.
  • I also think that this is now a matter of international safety that I write a book 'things you are not allowed to say' and send it to Tom. Jesus Christ...this. Who writes shit like this?!
  • It was announced today that there will be Thor 3. I don't give a shit about any other superhero movies unless Loki is in them and there is no way there can be Thor movie without Loki. My reaction to the news is actually very close to what you see on the left.
  • Then this showed up. Oh, God.
  • Only Lovers Left Alive will now be released in the beginning of March not in April. Please stop changing the release date - I cannot take it anymore. It's like my personal hell when I keep checking the date and it's different each time.
  • I know the date of my 2h long trip to sexual heaven. October 16th, 2015.
  • Check out Khaleesi on the cover of Vs magazine. Good God.
  • I got a new job which means less posts and comments from me.
  • I think I got it because I kept going on and on about how much I love criminal law during my interview. Now let me clarify - when I say love in regards to specific branch of the law, it's not actual love, it simply means that it's one single branch of it that does not make me want to kill myself whenever I have to deal with it. And then on the test while I'm sure everyone chose the case to solve about contracts, I chose the other one. I went 'woman stabbing her husband to death?! Yey!' and wrote 3- page long paper on it. So I guess what I'm saying is...be unstable and you get a job? No, no. Finish law school and you'll definitely find a job. You won't have a soul or much private life left, but hey, you'll have cash.
  • This week's battle of who is more adorable:
  • I haven't seen any new movies this week but hopefully I'll see Filth today. I heard it's hilarious. And then I heard it's depressing. So I have no idea what to expect.
  • and finally to wrap this up, I leave you with this cool Black Widow poster for the new Captain America movie.

Plot: In 2012, Louisiana State, Police Detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) are brought in to revisit a homicide case they worked in 1995. As the inquiry unfolds in present day through separate interrogations, the two former detectives narrate the story of their investigation, reopening unhealed wounds, and drawing into question their supposed solving of a bizarre ritualistic murder in 1995. The timelines braid and converge in 2012 as each man is pulled back into a world they believed they'd left behind. In learning about each other and their killer, it becomes clear that darkness lives on both sides of the law.
Structure: Each episode shows the main investigation from 1995 as well as the progression of Rust and Martin's relationship. Those scenes intertwine with the interviews they give in 2012 as they look back on the case and the time they spent working together.
Verdict: It's hard to judge a show only on three episodes but there are some comparing its quality to that of Breaking Bad's already. Hell, the ending to the last episode was something that would be an ordinary sight in BrBa, but here it was raised to something nightmarish. The pairing of McConaughey and Harrelson is already something that should get you interested and the show is gripping, mysterious and thought-provoking. This season contains 8 episodes and the next one will reportedly have different cast and different case, anthology style.
What's so great about it? The show is hugely atmospheric and very creepy. Some of this stuff, like the things Martin's daughter does are very disturbing and I suspect when they will tell us the reason for her 'art', it will only get creepier. 5 episodes left and I have no clue who the killer is and the show is so interestingly written and edited you don't even know if something is a clue or just a red herring (for example Cohle telling this random hooker that he is a police officer and can do horrible things with impunity, after which the scene just cuts to something else). Hell, there are even references to The King in Yellow leading some to believe the detectives may be dealing with something supernatural. The beauty is that unlike with many mystery shows this one doesn't try to get you to form theories but you can't help but do just that. It's slow paced or perhaps the better way to describe the tone is slow burning - you can sense it's all leading towards some epic explosion.
Whom you may recognize:  The show is directed by Cary Fukunaga, best known for his terrific retelling of Jane Eyre with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender. McConaughey and Harrelson are joined by Michelle Monaghan, Kevin Dunn from Veep, Captain Ted himself - Shea Whigham and Alexandra Daddario's breasts. Elizabeth Reaser is rumoured to set to appear as Lori, Cohle's love interest.
Who will like it? Fans of good crime/thrillers mystery stories. I'm also getting strong Take Shelter/Twin Peaks vibes from this one.
    When and where? Sundays, HBO.

"But above all, I am a man". Remembering the work of Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Today we all mourn the loss of a great acting talent. An actor who gave us many incredible performances and sadly won't do so anymore. And while thinking about that, it's truly hard to stop the tears.

    Capote
It's irrational, isn't it? To have tears in your eyes when you read about the passing of one of favorite singers, actors, directors...but today many, if not all, the movie fans are deeply consumed by sadness. Because one of the best actors working today - and for me one of the all time greats - Philip Seymour Hoffman - passed away.

Over the years Philip Seymour Hoffman gave us dozens of brilliant and unforgettable performances. When looking at his page on imdb you see all those wonderful films, years of incredible choices and beautiful performances. I was going to make a post highlighting 10 best performances of his, but it's truly impossible to choose just 10.

    The Big Lebowski
I change my choice for favorite actor constantly. The name on number one spot changes all the time. But if you asked me over the last few years who I consider to be THE BEST actor working today? The answer was always constant - Philip Seymour Hoffman.

I have not seen all of his performances, but I've seen plenty. And this man never delivered a bad one. More importantly he always brought his A game and made his characters so insanely memorable.  No matter how supporting his characters were, Hoffman played them as if they were real people. He infused them with so many emotions and his own charisma. It was simply impossible not to remember his work vividly after the movie was over. And I suspect, years after seeing the film.

    The Master
Just look at his work in films with not only big ensembles, but ensembles filled with so many famous actors - The Scent of a Women, Talented Mr. Ripley, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Almost Famous, 25th Hour, Cold Mountain, The Ides of March, The Big Lebowski, Red Dragon - it's impossible to forget him in spite of so many characters in those films.

Some of those performances, in the films listed above, were downright show stealing like in Boogie Nights and Talented Mr. Ripley. Who can forget his hilarious scene in Red Dragon where he is forced to see the 'art' of Fiennes's character? Or his desperate laughter and 'this is our concern, Dude" from The Big Lebowski?

    Synecdoche, New York
No matter how much screentime Hoffman had in those films, he truly owned the character and the scene.  Whether he was playing a sleazy journalist, depraved Reverend or a guy in charge of political campaign, he truly made you believe he was all those people.

One of the most impressive things an actor can do is to give a great performance in a movie that either doesn't work or shouldn't work in the first place and yet miraculously, it does. And Hoffman proved how good he was when he did just that in Mission Impossible 3 and Along Came Polly. Hoffman had pretty great comedy talent too - he also appeared in The Boat that Rocked, Richard Curtis' hilarious film.

    Magnolia
He even impressed me in films I really didn't like, for example Punch-Drunk Love. And Catching Fire....some criticized the work Hoffman did in this film but let me tell you the way he delivered the line this is a revolution and you are a Mockingjay was easily my favorite moment in this whole film.

Then there are the performances that are so mesmerizing, if I ever listed 100 of my favorite ones they would either end up on my list or be in serious consideration. There is recent The Master, in which Hoffman played the leader of the cult and for me, was miles above Phoenix. Phoenix was great, but this was one of the times Hoffman delivered work so raw and memorable you couldn't take your eyes of him.

    Doubt
There was also great and challenging performance in equally great and challenging Synecdoche, New York, which I'm sure many would call Hoffman's best work. And of course his Oscar winning mesmerizing performance in titular role in Capote. But for me when it came to choosing Hoffman's best it was always about the two of his performances.

First one was Doubt where Hoffman played a priest accused of molesting one of the boys in the school. I've seen this film so many times and I still don't know whether the priest was guilty or not. Hoffman makes his character's humanity and kindness so incredibly believable you truly don't know whether this is the truth or just an extremely well planned and executed facade meant to cover his sins.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
And then we have Before the Devil Knows you're Dead. The entire performance is amazing but there is this one moment which for me is the single greatest moment of Hoffman's career. After his wife leaves him, his character walks slowly around the apartment - he pulls covers from the bed, he slowly pushes the things off the bedside table on the floor. He walks over to the glass table and picks up a bowl filled with marbles. And he slowly spills them on the glass. Without saying a single word.

Scotty J. heartbroken and in tears after being rejected. Lancaster Dodd lashing out against one of the people disagreeing with him. Freddie Miles calling out Tom on his peeping. Brandt showing the Dude around. Father Flynn's sermon about the pillow and the gossip. So many scenes, so many performances, so many memories.

    Rest in peace, Mr. Hoffman.

There's been a lot of movies about survival in 2013. In All is Lost Robert Redford was trying to survive on an open sea. In Captain Phillips Tom Hanks was abducted by Somali pirates, who were hoping for ransom. In Gravity Sandra Bullock was floating in space and desperately looking for ways to return to Earth. In 12 Years a Slave Solomon Northup had to endure the terrors of slavery in order to stay alive. Nature, greed, space, hatred. All as relentless and vicious as a disease. But at this time - 1985, in this place - Dallas - this disease was also something those four things weren't - unbeatable.

30 days to live. That's the diagnosis an ordinary guy, Ron Woodroof, gets when he is admitted to hospital after passing out and hearing ringing in his ears. His first response is that he is not a 'faggot'. But after Ron does some research he realizes he probably caught the virus while enjoying unprotected sex with many different women. Ron realizes he really is sick and there is no cure. But he refuses to give up.
Ron looks for answers and help on his own - he finds out there are drugs out there that are far more effective than what people with HIV are given in hospitals. During one of his hospital visits he meets transgender HIV patient Rayon, who in spite of Ron's aggressive an homophobic remarks, shows him kindness.

Ron decides to smuggle the effective drugs to US and treat himself as well as others - sure, for a fee, as his main concern, at least at first, isn't being a good Samaritan. So he starts a club and makes Rayon his business partner. The idea of a club is you have to pay to join but then the drugs are free. Because of the drugs being unapproved and the distribution of them being illegal, pretty soon soulless FDA and the doctors start making things even more difficult for Ron.
As with the most incredibly moving stories, the movie is based on real events. Ron Woodroof and Dallas Buyers Club really existed. A month before Ron died screenwriter Craig Borten interviewed him to create the screenplay. Borten recorded many hours of interviews with Woodroof and had access to his personal journals. Then he attempted to attract interest in making the film in the mid 1990s, with Dennis Hopper to direct and Woody Harrelson as Woodroof, but the film was unable to secure financial backing.

In the late 1990s Marc Forster was approached to direct and Brad Pitt was set to play the role of Ron and then in 2008 director Craig Gillespie and Ryan Gosling were in talks with the producers until Jean-Marc Vallée and Matthew McConaughey signed up.Woodroof's sister was reportedly pleased with the casting of McConaughey because he had a similar swagger and personality; she had shown concern when Pitt was attached, due to his physique, and Gosling, because of his personality. I'm glad the part went to Matthew - others considered are fine actors but none of them has his effortless charm.
McConaughey is the real star of the show here, apart from Woodroof himself, the man who literally cheated death for many years and managed to beat the odds. McConaughey helped get this movie made and his commitment to the part is quite astonishing. He lost 47 pounds for this film and it's quite horrific how different he looks here. The guy we always saw in fine suits or showing off his bare muscular chest in romantic comedies, not only became this gaunt looking character he is playing but also, over the last 5 years, a damn fine and daring actor.

Normally I don't fall for this kind of stuff. Actors putting themselves through hell, losing outrageous amounts of weight, shaving their heads, wearing make up that makes them look awful. For me it's the performance that counts. It's the story that counts. I don't really have respect for multiple shenanigans Christian Bale has been doing over the years (remember when he couldn't get nominated for Oscar no matter how many worms he ate and how many pounds he lost?), because they are quite frankly distracting and take you away from this movie. It actually makes it more difficult for me to be impressed with performance and disregard all those attention seeking details.
The reason why all those drastic transformation works here is because of hugely entertaining script that is so gripping it doesn't really give you time to register just how much McConaughey and Leto sacrificed to play these people. Another thing I appreciated is that unlike in films like The Machinist, the camera doesn't masochistically linger on characters' skinny, ill bodies. It's not gratuitous Oscar baiting - it's simply acting and becoming the characters

And then there is the character of Ron himself. This is such a great character - I hate homophobia so damn much but it was impossible for me to dislike Ron. Sure, he was an asshole to those people but you know what? At least he was honest. If you had those remarks he made mixed with him killing or beating these people it would be awful. But Ron helped them. He kept them alive. The script doesn't make the moronical decision to have Ron change his opinion - he is still disgusted by the gay people but he also understands they are in this battle together and they have to unite.
There are two really lovely moments in the movie, showing that unity, that truly moved me - the first one is when Ron and Rayon are shopping and one of Ron's old buddies refuses to shake Rayon's hand. Ron grabs his old friend and twists his hand telling him to 'shake his hand' (there seem to be a lot of cry babies having issue with Ron referring to Rayon as a male not female - dry your tears and use your brain, that's my advice to these people). Then there is the hug scene. It's not about gender, sexuality, beliefs. It's about a fight these two souls share.

The relationship between Ron and Rayon is handled in such a realistic and touching way. You really see these two forming a bond, working together and caring about each other, in their own, unique ways. This also provides a lot of humorous situations - such as Rayon adding pictures of guys to Ron's display of images he masturbates to and the whole 'cranberry mocha' conversation.
As much as I did love the character of Ron, I wish Rayon was written a bit better. He is not based on a real person, but several people Ron worked with. I don't understand why the writers didn't take this opportunity to flesh out his character a little more. His pivotal scene, in which he talks to his father and asks him for money to repay Ron for his kindness, is very good but much too short. I felt like that scene was a missed opportunity to show Rayon's background. I don't think Jared Leto's work here merits an Oscar, which he will get for this, because of the writing and the fact this could have been such better written character, but he was really great in the role.

Another underwritten character is doctor Eve, sweet and lovely woman who is very compassionate towards her patients unlike the boss who only cares about clinical trials. Eve is essentially a plot device - she sits, drinks wine and watches TV where they talk about what people of AIDS are protesting against and FDA deals.
Eve is played by Jennifer Garner and I thought it's a real shame how little she has to do, because this could have been such a good character and performance. There is a truly lovely date scene between Ron and Eve, but McConaughey is given such great material in this moment that Garner is essentially coming off like a blank canvas of which his brilliance bounces off. Still, I thought Garner did very well. I have no idea what people's problem is with her delivery of "He was my friend too!" line - I thought it was a lovely, honest and powerful moment.

With all those flaws the script is still something to praise here. The fact that the film deals with such awful things and manages to stay funny, lively and uplifting is incredible. There are all those light and humorous scenes like Ron pretending to be a priest as well as his witty and funny lines - I couldn't even feel bad when I laughed at his 'look after this fucking monkey' line which was him referring to Rayon.
Dallas Buyers Club is such an entertaining and inspiring ride - it's not your usual movie about HIV and dying. Featuring fantastic performance from McConaughey, amazing story and uplifting tone, the film can bring you to tears but it won't break your heart. It will fill it with a sense of hope.

There are so many people who would give up after hearing they have days left to live. But not Ron. He kept fighting. He kept living.

    Just keep living.

  • It wasn't a good week for movie fans. In fact, it was fucking horrible.
  • I am, as I'm sure every true movie fan out there, absolutely devastated by the loss of the wonderful Philip Seymour Hoffman, an actor who at the age of 46 was already one of the all time greats. He was in so many of my favorite films including Moneyball and The Big Lebowski (both in my top 15 of all time) and he gave us dozens of brilliant, unforgettable and mesmerizing performances. It's such a horrible loss.
  • It makes me sick when people say that someone does this to themselves when death is drug related. How can people still be so ignorant? You almost never know the reasons that led people to drinking or drugs - and those more often than not lead to addiction, which is a disease. So what gives you the right to judge? We are all weak. Get off  your high horses and realize one thing - you are a moron if you think someone addicted has any choice. Exhibit A - Jared Padelecki:
  • I don't usually respond to celebrities but...
  • Before that this whole Dylan Farrow letter happened.
  • Have you guys seen social media when that showed up? Like the village from The Hunt, if not worse.  People read the letter, just assumed it was true and started wishing death on Woody Allen. Death. Whether or not it's true (and I encourage you to actually read something beyond that latter) this mentality is disgusting.
  • Show me a court verdict, show me the evidence. And you should see some too before talking about acid, going to his house with torches, planning to kill him. There is a reason there are judges in this society - because ordinary people need just one letter to be ready to crucify a man.
  • I mean some people out there actually, actually believe 'innocent until proven guilty' is something just for lawyers and judges to obey. It's horrific to see how fucking dense people are. If society doesn't obey that rule, what's the point?
  • Obviously Lena Dunham weighed in. She is seriously the celebrity I despise the most. Look at the comments under this news story - more sheep.
  • There's been a lot of talk about Cate Blanchett's behavior this Oscar season but this is the first truly tacky thing she did. Valuing your Oscar chances above the director you worked with, who directed your performance and hiding your head in the sand?
  • Let's ventilate that musty smell of awful and tragic and move on to pleasant things.
  • I'm not gonna be subtle here, making transition to fun stuff, because when am I ever subtle?
  •  I'm not a big fan of the film itself, but those scenes? *bites lip* I rewatched that this week and I was drinking chocolate milk while doing so. No, I didn't feel pervy.
  • ...
  • OK, I did a little bit.
  • Have you guys seen Matt on Graham Norton show? Oh my God, the thong story!
  • He was also on Leno again. He's everywhere! Congratulations on making glasses wicked sexy.
  • What the fuck with HBO not airing True Detective because it's Superbowl night? I'm hooked now, how dare you? This is all because 2 years ago you all spent time with your families instead of watching Blackwater. Never forget, never forgive.
  • Regardless, we need these two here:
  • Please use it as Woody Harrelson's Emmy clip.
  • Look at Khaleesi in another photoshoot. Damn. She is so pretty in blonde wig but this is just incredible:
  • Filth was fun and shocking, but I was prepared for the latter once the opening credits informed me it's based on Irvine Welsh's novel. McAvoy was crazy good. Wicked soundtrack too.
  • Nebraska bored me so much. I looked up who directed it, what a surprise - Alexander Payne. I hated The Descendants so much. It was so boring, in spite of Clooney being in it and me drinking during watching it. Nebraska was marginally less boring. June Squibb was fantastic.
  • Let's just hope the big finale of Clooneygetting back at Tina and Amy will be during the Oscars so we can all see it.
  • Some casting news - Michael Pitt was cast as Mason Verger in season 2 of Hannibal. Don't worry fangirls, he is gonna stay pretty for a while but be prepared for hacking off of his face in the future. Remember Gary Oldman in Hannibal? Yeah.
  • I was so crazy busy this week I didn't even have a chance to see Coriolanus with Tom Hiddleston. His birthday is on Sunday - there's no way I'm gonna finish the post the way I wanted and make it as awesome as I intended to, but hopefully it will still turn out fun.

    Tom Hiddleston Appreciation

    Thomas William Hiddleston
February 9, 1981, Westminster, London, England, UK

Never stop. Never stop fighting. Never stop dreaming. And don’t be afraid of wearing your heart on your sleeve – in declaring the films that you love, the films that you want to make, the life that you’ve had, and the lives you can help reflect in cinema. For myself, for a long time… maybe I felt inauthentic or something, I felt like my voice wasn’t worth hearing, and I think everyone’s voice is worth hearing. So if you’ve got something to say, say it from the rooftops.

Today we celebrate 33th birthday of the lovely, charming and talented Tom Hiddleston. The hashtag #HappyBirthdayTomHiddleston is already trending worldwide on twitter - he is one of the most beloved actors today, even though he is really only well known for playing one character - Loki. But oh, what a character and performance it is. Hiddleston created such amazing work in both Thor films and Avengers - complex, charismatic and very entertaining villain you can't help but adore. He was also wonderful in Midnight in Paris - Woody Allen invited him to join the movie in a hand written letter - and in mini series The Hollow Crown. He appeared in Steven Spielberg's War Horse, in brief but memorable role and alongside Rachel Weisz in Deep Blue Sea. He can currently be seen as a vampire Adam in Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive and his next project is Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak.

Even though he has only been in a handful of movies over these past few years his fans are so passionate about him. And it's not just his good looks and talent - Hiddleston is a rare kind of celebrity who takes time to appreciate his fans, whether it's kissing his fangirls' hands or signing their birthday cards. He is extremely likable and despite appearing to be a proper, refined British gentlemen he is up for all kinds of stuff - from appearing as Loki during Comic Con to dancing during talk shows. In the world where so many actors seem to be arrogant and selfish it's so lovely to see someone who is genuinely down to earth and appreciates the love his fans have for him.

    10 fun facts:
    • He grew up in Oxfordshire, England.
    • Tom's parents divorced when he was 13.
    • His favorite film is Heat.
    • He screen-tested for the role of Thor for the film Thor (2011). He went on a strict diet and gained 20 pounds in muscle. However, Kenneth Branagh decided he was more suitable for the role of Loki.
    • He has two sisters, Sarah (older) and Emma (younger).
    • His favorite superhero is Superman.
    • His father is Scottish. His mother is English, and has English, Welsh, and German ancestry. One of Tom's maternal great-great-grandfathers was of German origin.

    His appreciation for fan art
     And occasional fear of it
    The leg situation:
That time he asked the group of women who they think is a sexy actor. Smart move.
The fact he got lost in the woods
When he kept talking of Loki in the first person
That time he shushed Chris Hemsworth:
That time he made RDJ laugh
How much joy he takes in playing Loki
When he sang Happy Birthday for a fan
That time he told us to kneel
His messages for fans....while being a fan of Loki himself
When he showed up on Comic Con as Loki:
    ...and kept breaking the character
The fact he saw Chris Hemsworth naked
That time he was scared of snipers
When he did Loki like Samuel L. Jackson would do it
    His beautiful tears
When he went to the award show...on a train.
    This fucking story.

If HBO's goal was to make everyone out there wish it was April 6th already with the brand new special for Game of Thrones that just aired - they succeeded. Not only did we get plenty of awesome stuff including very fun answers to fan questions, but also so many new shots from the upcoming season. The ending shot of featurette is probably the most epic shot of the show so far - look at the size of Drogon! I'm actually terrified.

As Maisie Williams said - the good guys are coming back - and the season starts on April 6th!

  • Run, goat, run!
  • Seriously though, my God, that featurette:
  • When I saw Drogon I screamed. And I was watching that special live, obviously, so it was in the middle of the night. I was not expecting him to be this huge so soon. I mean he is big enough to ride and that's not supposed to happen for a while. He looks awesome too. Smaug has nothing on Khaleesi dragons. They don't talk like they were a cartoon characters and they are seriously scary. That goat is proper fucked. So is whoever is crawling before him.
  • The thing that got me most excited was when Gwendoline Christie was talking about the casualties of Red Wedding- she mentioned Madden and Chaplin and instead of Michelle Fairley she said "Catelyn Stark". SPOILERS That leads to me to believe that she subconsciously chose these words because not only Fairley is back but we will see Stoneheart via Brienne. END OF SPOILERS. That's right. I'm deciphering cast members' subconsciousness now.
  • Emilia Clarke is so cute. She is not just a Khaleesi. She's a goddess. I love how she answered 'your most badass quote' question. As in 'phh come on, there is no other choice!'
  • Apparently Obamagets to seeGame of Thrones before everyone else. OH COME ON!!!
  • I've been catching up with Conan and to my delight Nick Offerman was a guest recently. His book is finally available and I'm gonna have to read that. He is like...a spiritual guru.
  • I love how Matthew McConaughey, even thought he wasn't a guest, was a topic of conversations. Breckin Meyer was one of the guests and he is a big fan of Matthew. He did a spot on impression of his voice. Then he talked about how his cleaning lady walked in on him while he was watching Game of Thrones half naked and it happened to be one sex scenes. Conan told him he should have pretended to be McConaughey and Meyer did the impression again - Ellie if you want to take a seat, come and enjoy the dragon porn. That was probably one of my all time favorite moments on Conan.
  • Then another night Michelle Monaghan stopped by and talked about him too. McConaughey is like God. He's everywhere.
  • I actually rewatched The Wedding Planner this weekend. I mean come on, I have exhausting legal stuff to do almost every day and it's both boring and stressful. I deserve to watch dumb  movies during weekends just to drool over the main guy, damn it. Even though he was not shirtless, which is always a waste, that film taught me something important - apparently it's worth it to get your heel stuck in the middle of the street and risk getting killed by a dumpster.
  • Have you guys seen that last episode of True Detective?!
  • That final 6-minute unbroken take was absolutely amazing. But the most wonderful shot of the episode was this:
  • Seriously though, Rust's cartel story was one of the most disturbing things I've heard in my entire life.
  • Thank God scenes like this one happened which balances things out:
  • Look what I made today. I'm awesome. But he's more awesome.
  • As you may have noticed the blog has a new header. There are also sections in Rambling Friday now. Why? I don't know - as usual I had an idea and I simply went with it.
  • The first header I made and didn't use was with the most stunning shot from Under the Skin new trailer. What stayed is the quote from the novel.  I really like that new trailer but the praise for the poster baffles me. It's nice, but those colors? No, no.
  • The new Transcendencetrailer makes it look like some cheap science fiction from the 90's.
  • The Oscar nominees photo is like celebrity version of Where is Waldo?
  • I've gotta say DiCaprio getting his ass kicked by his own clothes is one of my favorite things that keep happening recently:
  • Time and time again I'm amazed how paranoid DiCaprio's fans are. I mean they actually believe he can win an Oscar this year. They crapped their pants that he won even though that photo was shown before the actual voting started. In what way is DiCaprio overdue for Oscar? He's not more overdue than Brad Pitt. And Brad played fucking Chad.
  • Priceless.
  • The only film that I saw this week and didn't star Matt was Philomena. It was fantastic. I cried so much during this one, such a moving film. Dench was brilliant as was Steve Coogan. And Michelle Fairleywas in it!
  • Michelle was cast in the new season of 24. I'm gonna be watching that just for her.
  • Chances are there finally may bea solo Black Widow film. You know what's more sexist than HBO's shows naked female to naked men ratio? Superheroine to superhero films ratio.
  • So many things happened last week that I forgot to write about one of the funniest things that happened in a movie world for a while. I'm talking of course about Jesse Eisenberg getting cast as Lex Luthor. I don't have the problem with his looks - shave off his hair and he will look the part. But the only way his Luthor could be menacing is if this character is mute. The moment Luthor opens his mouth and starts mumbling, this film turns into a laughing stock.
  • Why is the insane shit Shia Labeouf doing newsworthy? What next? Some starlet shits on the sidewalk and newspapers are going to analyze it for weeks as a gesture of...something? This is madness. This is like this blonde actress who used to have meltdowns on twitter. Give them the meds instead of adding fuel to the fire.
  • The filming started on Macbeth set. Fassbender and Cotillard are playing the main couple. This sounds awesome. Too awesome. I'm inexplicably worried about this being a big failure.
  • I'm not entirely sure what Top Gear is but it appears to be a show where they get actors who have tons of fangirls to drive a car and film it. Tom Hiddleston made an appearance and in his eternal quest to be even more adorable - it appears that he wears glasses whilst driving. And that's crazy cute. Glasses are making a comeback.
  •  Gustav is pissed off. He attempted to jump on his favorite windowsill few days back and almost fell from there and I almost had a heart attack. So I put something there - my stuffed animals. That's right - I own a Smurf. Anyways Gustav has been jumping on my bed and growling at them for several days now. I *could* put my law books there but I don't want nightmarish vibes next to my bed.

Vengeance is coming in new trailer for Game of Thrones season 4

This is the beauty of knowing the story before the show airs - for non-book readers this is just a shot of Shae lying on the bed. But for us who read the book? OH. MY. GOD.

The new trailer for season 4 brought some cool things with it - mostly the Stark kids addressing the Red Wedding, Arya reciting her kill list and chilling look at White Walker near the end. Between this and that horrifying shot of Drogon I'm officially scared.

The awesome song is Cities in Dust by The Everlove
    Arya and the Hound:
    New look at Cersei:

    New shots of Daenerys:

I lie awake all night, thinking about how they died
Another look at Mark Gatiss' character:
    The battle of Castle Black:

He was betrayed by his own men...all we can give him now is justice
Another look at Sansa during her escape
Badass shot of Drogon from foreshadowing special:

    Bran warging
What do we do to those who hurt the ones we love? Littlefinger talking to Sansa
Stannis proclaiming he won't be just a page in history book:
    Brienne, possibly leaving King's Landing:
Cersei repeating Tyrion's joy to ashes words during his trial:
Chilling look at the White Walker:
I will do what Queens do...I will rule.

    Thoughts on BAFTAs

  • No kidding - the members of BAFTA must have dropped lemmons before voting.
  • So much insane shit happened - Abdi won supporting, Chiwetel won leading, Gravity won so many awards and then the main prize went to 12 Years a Slave...
  • Well, here is some interesting stuff that happened:
  • Brad Pitt brought Angelina Jolie with him and my God, she looks awful. She looks like she may break. I think someone should force feed her burgers and fries.
  • Leonardo DiCaprio was pretty happy, he even blew a kiss to the camera, which is an annual BAFTA tradition (last year it was she I don't speak of, the year before - Brad Pitt), then he got on stage to present Best Supporting actress aka deliver some awful news to which I say this. Then he lost and stopped smiling so much but he gave Chiwetel a standing ovation which was very classy.
  • Tom Hanks is such a good sport. He was snubbed in a major way at the Oscar nominations but he keeps showing up to ceremonies and being super lovely.
  • I still think Lupita Nyong'o is winning the Oscar. The alternative is just too horrible. Sure, the Academy members occasionally do something stupid and they lack good taste very often, but they never do something straight up despicable.
  • Abdi and Chiwetel, especially the latter got a thunderous applause from the audience. But Mathew only wasn't nominated here because not enough of the voters saw his movie. He has the Globe, the Critics Choice and SAG. And most importantly I am rooting for him and I'm summoning all the cosmic energy I can. YOU GO GET THAT OSCAR, MAN!!!!
  • I think Leo is great. I think he is a very nice guy, high fiving people after seeing nice pair of tits aside. I think he will win one day. But 2nd of March 2014 is not that day.
  • People keep bitching about Gravity winning British Film. This is BAFTA. Something crazy happens every year. At least Gravity deserves to win awards...
  • ...unlike American Hustle which actually won script. What was American Hustle's script? A piece of toilet paper? A Tissue? Hamsterface's line of doritos she arranged to spell few words?
  • The beards make come back - last year Affleck and Clooney rocked the look and this year it was Fassbender (who starts to look like the Devil by the way) and Chiwetel:
  • Stephen Fry is such a classy host. But I did adore that he corrected O.Russell's poor grammar.
  • At first I thought none of my boys were there (Fassbender looked like shit in The Counselor so he is on probation) and then Michael Sheen appeared. I was so happy.
  • Cate Blanchett dedicated her award to Philip Seymour Hoffman:
  • This year the fellowship was given to Helen Mirren. Prince William was there again to give the award. I wasn't a fan of Mirren's speech. Also few years back Vanessa Redgrave almost knelt before the Prince which was such a lovely moment.
  • I think it's so weird how Gravity is winning all those awards yet 12 Years a Slave wins Best Picture. Are people too scared to award something else than the movie about slavery?

  • This is so aggressively sexual. If there was a show out there with nothing but McConaughey running around in this getup, shooting various guns and telling people to shut the fuck up, I'd watch it all the time. I'd get nothing done. As opposed to getting done very little which is happening right now.
  • Take a good look at this guy's tattoo btw.
  • The way Rust slaps people is so weird and hilarious.
  • Jared Leto is all kinds of nuts, I really think he is locked in a cage somewhere when he is not in public. I can't wait to see what he wears for Oscars. I love how Matt's eyes scream help me in the second gif. It's really like Ron and Rayon.
  • THIS IS AMAZING
  • Matt was also on Kimmel this week. The glasses are back <333
  • Everybody needs to focus now because this is important - the first draft of Interstellar script has zero gravity sex scene featuring Matthew's character. Nolan rewrote parts of that draft but no one knows which parts. I just hope he didn't throw that scene away. If this movie is a disaster seeing his floating bare ass will totally redeem it for me.
  •  Does anyone know where the official poster for season 4 is? It's 45 days left and we still have nothing. I just hope it's gonna be better than last year's poster.
  • Kit Harringtonseems like such a nice guy. I swear few more of those adorable interviews and I may actually begin to like Jon Snow.
  • Richard Madden and Michelle Fairley Red Wedding commentary will rip your heart out.
  • The new trailer for GoT obviously got a separate post but really, Cersei's testimony during Tyrion's trial is shaping up to be so awesome:
  • While waiting for that trailer to air last Sunday I was subjected to torture - HBO showed a preview for Girls that featured Lena Dunham in a bikini. I mean I was forced to just sit there while it happened to me. I almost vomited all over my computer. Why would you do that, HBO? I'm waiting for Khaleesi and hopefully shirtless Cohle and you show me this?! If I had a dick it would have fallen off.
  • This is priceless:
  • So Fassbender got hammered on BAFTAs again...
  • I'll tell you this - I have quite high tolerance for alcohol, but I think I'd die after a night of drinking with Fassbender and Emma Thompson. These two are hardcore.
  • I really like how humbleDiCaprio is. He looks genuinely shy when something like this happens.
  • However Tom Hanksis the most adorable
  • Penny Dreadful trailer looks promising even though I can't stand looking at Josh Hartnett.
  • Tammylooks hilarious - I just love Melissa McCarthy.
  • Guardians of the Galaxytrailer makes it look like it can either be really fun of Marvel's very own Phantom Menace. What the fuck is it with the Ally McBeal dancing baby music in the background? But I must say Chris Pratt is so adorable and it's incredibly impressive how quickly he can get into shape for a role. The situation - and that is him looking really hot in this trailer - and all of the Parks and Rec scenes of adorable Andy are a source of some awesome tumblr creativity - 1,2,3,4
  • I got to see Only Lovers Left Alive on Valentine's day after all - it was really lovely, but not without flaws. I already wrote the review for it and it should be up next week. Ladies, Hiddles is shirtless multiple times in this movie and he often says fuck.
  • I started watching Shameless. So far I only saw 3 episodes but it's really awesome. Very funny and clever show, I'll definitely see more of that during the weekend.
  • Here are new posters - Guardians of the Galaxy and Godzilla. I'm not a fan of either but at least the first one is not another copy of Iron Man 3 poster.

Mt. Rushmore of Movies - 4 Favorite Male Characters

    $
    0
    0

My favorite blogger, m.brown, is doing something I never did - he is hosting a blogathon.

It's his first blogathon (and to read more about it click on the image on the right) and it's awesome - because of the President's Day he is asking us to choose 4 cinematic anything. Well, after days of trying to work out a way to feature McConaughey - it's just weird when he is not in the post - I gave up and figured I'm just gonna choose my 4 all time favorite male characters. Granted, 3 of those aren't really cinematic, they are from TV, but In The Loop was a spin-off movie of The Thick of It and it also featured Malcolm Tucker, so it's 50/50.

I'm working on a separate list of favorite female characters but here it was much easier to choose just the very favorites. And thank God for Chad because the other 3 are so very grumpy.

    4. Chad Feldheimer
    Played by: Brad Pitt
    In: Burn after Reading

The Coen brothers come up with so many interesting and colorful characters but Brad Pitt's naive, sweet and clueless Chad is my absolute favorite one. From his menacing squinting through him thinking a smile can save a man's life to his adorable little dance when he is listening to music, everything Chad does in this movie puts a smile on your face and Pitt completely disappears into character.

    3. Al Swearengen
    Played by: Ian McShane
    In: Deadwood

Deadwood remains my favorite drama series (yes, even Game of Thrones can't dethrone it) and the anti hero Al Swearengen, its main character, is the show's biggest asset. With his elaborate scheming and juicy, sweary one liners, in the talented ensemble you still keep waiting for McShane's Swearengen to show up even if all he is gonna do is call someone a cocksucker.

    2. Ron Swanson
    Played by: Nick Offerman
    In: Parks and Recreation

It's not just that Ron is one of my all time favorite characters, it's also that I agree with so many of his beliefs. Government is useless, private life should be private and it is nobody's business but your own, your address along with other data about you should be confidential almost completely and technology is evil. I'm also weirded out by vegetarians, even with my love for animals. I hate change, crowds, doctors and loud noises. And I don't like to deal with people. Sitting in my office with closed doors with nobody bothering me all day, every day - that's an actual dream I have. The man is my role model.

    1. Malcolm Tucker
    Played by Peter Capaldi
in: The Thick of It, In the Loop

Tucker is just unbeatable or shall I say unfuckable. The Thick of It is my all time favorite series, I could seriously watch it over and over again. The writing on the show is brilliant but Capaldi makes his Malcolm Tucker so charismatic and frighteningly awesome he is easily my all time favorite character. In the showdown with all the ones on favorite female characters list, he would be a number 1 too.

Motifs in Cinema 2013 - Man against Society

    $

    0
Andrew of Encore's World of Film and TV is hosting his annual blogathon of Motifs in Cinema. I decided to pitch in and explore a theme that was present, one way or another, in many movies last year - Man against society. Whether those films featured characters fighting the law, government or the ideas followed by majority but not themselves, cinematic year of 2013 was filled with the acts of defiance.

Blue is the Warmest Color / Her
In both movies the characters are battling the idea of love those around them believe in. Adele is continuously bugged by her 'friends' who keep persuading her to date a guy and she is rejected by them when she falls in love with a girl. In Her while Theodore actually enjoys tremendous amount of support from his friends and colleagues, you can see just unconventional what he is doing - and that would be having a relationship with a computer program - is in the scene where he meets with his ex wife who mocks him. Both Adele and Theodore do what rebels do - they continue to love who they chose and not being bothered by those trying to take away the meaning and importance from the love they have in their hearts.

    Stoker / Kings of Summer
Both in Stoker and Kings of Summer teenagers look for freedom and search for the answer to the question - who am I? India finds her liberation by accepting her true nature, while the boys attempt to build their own paradise far away from their lives, parents and worries. The point is - being a murderous psychopath and living in the woods is not exactly the society's approved way of growing up.

    The Hunt

In provocative and shocking The Hunt, the main character Lucas is wrongly accused of having inappropriate relations with one of the kids in school. Even though Innocent until proven guilty should be the guidance for every society, he is being prosecuted by the people in his village on every step of the way, before any investigation even takes place. The Hunt beautifully shows Lucas' defiance - holding on to his innocence and dignity his oppressors don't show for one second.

    Dallas Buyers Club

The film tells the real story of Ron Woodroof,  a man diagnosed with HIV virus who discovered that the treatment people receive in hospitals may not only be far from the best treatment there is, but also cause them to become more sick. Ron decides to fight the system and fight for his life, helping other victims of HIV along the way and having his homophobic nature challenged during his endeavors. Jean Marc Vallee's uplifting and touching movie shows that sometimes there is so much injustice and senseless prejudice and hatred in this world even imperfect, selfish people become so tired of it that they stand up and defend the others.

    The Conjuring

In last year's best horror film, medium Lorraine Warren and her husband Ed, who worked as ghost hunters for years, help a family who has fallen victim to the ghost haunting. Real people aside, what Lorraine Warren does in this movie is extraordinarily brave - in the beginning of the film she mentions how people keep calling her and her husband freaks. And you know it to be true - people with abilities others don't understand always had to fight disbelief, fear and anger. And despite of this as well as horrible implications of Lorraine's gift, she continues to help those who need it most.

12 Years a Slave / Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
12 Years a Slave shows the defiance of Solomon Northup, a man kidnapped into slavery - he refuses to let go of his sense of worth, human dignity and the idea of freedom and he doesn't lose the hope of being rescued. While throughout the film he sees people who abandoned their hope, he refuses to let go. In Mandela we see a man so determined to lead his people towards equality and freedom he sacrifices his happiness and his own freedom and spends his life fighting for others.

The Wolf of Wall Street / Spring Breakers / The Bling Ring
In The Wolf of Wall Street Jordan Belfort not so much challenges the society as he fights the whole world - here is a man so greedy, selfish and arrogant he doesn't believe anyone has the right to tell him what to do or to interfere with his illegal, amoral proceedings. He lives outside the law, much like Alien and the girls in Spring Breakers, who abandon the normal way of living for the sake of money and crime. In The Bling Ring bunch of spoiled kids choose even easier way to what they want - instead of just buying their ways and using connections to good jobs and ultimately becoming filthy rich, they steal. But here is a disturbing twist to all those movies - each crime, in the end, goes somewhat unpunished. Ordinary people still look at Jordan as if he was God, the kids from Bling Ring find fame and the two last girls standing from Spring Breakers are shown as heroines. And why?  Perhaps because choosing the easy way to things we want and getting them when we want them, is still a dream many have.

  • SON OF A BITCH!
  • Seriously, if you want something bad enough, it will happen. I just want to thank HBO for finally 1. including Rust Cohle sex scene 2. it happening on the kitchen table 3. showingMcConaughey's ass. HBO you may be showing the biggest trash (Girls) on your station but you also give me Thrones and now you gave me this. Good God, that man has moves...
  • I'm trying to say - I love you, HBO.
  • What am I going to do in two weeks when this ends and there is still 3 weeks left to Thrones?!
  • Also - Maggie, what a bitch! She took an advantage of Rust and took his only friend - well at least the closest thing to a friend he had - away from him. She preyed on the fact he lost his family and was attracted to her since he was seeing her as wife and mother. He did nothing wrong and she just used him.
  • You know, there are very few instances in which I'd judge a woman for wanting to bang this guy HARD, but this is one of those instances. She is the worst. I hope someone stabs her in the face in the last few episodes.
  • Anyways...
  • He is one of us, you guys:
  • And Matthew is among many who will present something at the Oscars. The Oscars will probably end around 6.30 am here. Priorities. Of course I'm watching it, rooting for him and then drinking 10 cups of coffee to stay awake all day.
  • You know, it was easier doing that when I was in my teenage years. I'm so goddamn old.
  • So I finally learned how to make those cool distorted gifs people keep making. I made a gifset of my most anticipated scenes in season 4 of GoT - there is one that didn't use the actual footage, since we don't have it for that scene so I manipulated season 1 moment, which means this contains spoilers. Here's a small preview of how fucking gifted I am:
  •  HBO released some gorgeous character posters this week - they are much better than those blue tinted posters from last year:
  • The last one is for new Daario. I still wouldn't hit that, but that's a step up from the last guy who played him.
  • That thing in the middle is the main poster which is just fucking awful. An image of semi-liquid shit floating in the toilet would be more relevant (you book readers know what I'm talking about) than this which is apparently a raven...made out of blades. What the fuck are these people on when they decide to release something like this as the main poster?
  • I have very few complains about the show, however those that I do have are big - one of them is how they are treating Stannis. He doesn't even get a poster?! The war of five kings - he is one of the kings. The major houses - he is the most important Baratheon. And he doesn't get a poster? The show runners repeatedly said they don't understand the character, but Stannis has a huge fan following. Not even giving him a poster is such a slap across the face. Not to mention the show is totally clipping the wings of hugely talented Stephen Dillane.
  • It's funny because it's true.
  • Why is Heroes returning? I thought that thing was long dead in a ditch?
  • I've been rewatching 30 Rock. McConaughey and comedy shows are the only things keeping me sane. No, that's not the right word. Alive.
  •  Say what you want about Alec Baldwin but he is fucking hilarious in that show. I decided to incorporate some of Jack's teachings into my code so far made mostly out of Swanson wisdom.
  • Scarlett Johansson keeps being called a great beauty and that's just...well, a stretch. I think she is sexy and has an amazing body but a beauty? Her photo without make up showed up on my dashboard and I just can't help but think that without that hot body and sexy voice she really wouldn't be chosen as most desirable female or whatever polls she keeps winning.  Take a look at Emilia Clarke without make up. She looks practically the same as she always does. If she was wearing a dress and she wasn't crying I'd think she is at award ceremony. Seriously, so pretty:
  • If anything ladies, apparently we all can be gorgeous with the right cosmetics. Well, not Lena Dunham. But then again to call her a lady would be....madness.
  • Oh yeah, she's gonna host SNL. They really dove into dumpster this time.
  • Meanwhile almost equally gross Adam Driver is gonna be in Star Wars. Well that a definite no on that movie from me.
  • Alex shares his favorite roles of Matthew pre-McConaisance
  • For m.brown's blogathon, Brittani shares 4 hilarious cry faces
  • Meanwhile, Fisti's picks are so damn honest they put this post and the whole Rambling Friday series to shame
  • Josh shares his Oscar predictions and I'm really hoping he is right
  • Meanwhile, Caitlin shares her favorite Oscar speeches
  • m.brown wrote awesome and insightful review of Don Jon
  • Nikhat shares her favorite things in 2013 movies
  • The NYC Film Chick took part in Film Society Talks event where Matthew McConaughey was a guest. She breathed the same air he did. Good God, I'd just chain myself to a wall there.

  • Patton Oswalt was hosting and he was awesome - he continuously joked about Bruce Dern being old until Dern actually pulled out his hearing aid.
  • "Later tonight we'll be giving Someone to Watch award which will be presented by Mia Farrow"
  • "Dallas Buyers Club, Mud, The Wolf of Wall Street, True Detective...and those are just the names of kinds of pot he smoked"
  • Matthew and Reese Witherspoon presented the award together. She is too lucky.
  • Jared Leto's speech filled with gibberish about baby Jesus, swearing and random "Keanu, I love you" was 10 times better than his rehearsed speeches on 'serious' awards.
  • Cate Blanchett was on stage to pay tribute to James Gandolfini, Roger Ebert and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Brad Pitt was the first to stand up, all teary eyed.
  • The best presenters of the night were definitely Bill Hader and Andy Samberg - they started questioning McConaughey about True Detective and they both wore super casual outfits.
  • They gave the award to Lupita Nyong'o who was carried on stage by Steve McQueen and again gave the best speech - not only was it her birthday but she also had such sweet things to say about her mother who was there.
  • Cate Blanchett won for Best Actress and was super funny backstage:
  • McConaughey, who looked delicious by the way, won best actor and stood on that stage for minutes just being his cool self talking about how much he loves making independent films, saying Alright, alright, alright and being all around lovely. Don't you dare cut him off during Oscars. DON'T. YOU. DARE.

  • The Oscars are behind us and it was quite the show, after the ridiculous and awful hosting of Seth MacFarlane last year Ellen DeGeneres did quite the job last night. She called Matthew 'dirty pretty'. I loved that.
  • Sure, she was far from the best but she actually got pizza for the people there - a joke that was funny and quite adorable mostly because Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey served the guests Angelina looked weirded out - like. what is pizza? I feel so bad for her
  • Ellen also took a selfie but that selfie includes Jennifer Lawrence, unfortunately:
  • Speaking of that, it fell on red carpet again. I've been saying her fall last year was on purpose. That one was no different. She also always falls when camera is on her. She's pathetic. There was also this weird attempt to get laughs when she was presenting - 'who are you laughing at?'. No one laughed.  She's so fucking selfish - it wasn't about you, you dumb bitch. She also talked through McConaughey's speech. Just compare that to the grace that is Lupita. This is what happens when you insist on making trash famous:
  • I didn't catch much of red carpet since I only turned the volume up for McConaughey. He brought his wife and his mother which was adorable.
  • The highlights of the ceremony are obviously American Hustle winning nothing and McConaughey taking the stage twice.
  • He presented Animated features award with Kim Novak and he was such a gentleman I seriously almost melted.
  • Pharell, whoever he is (I listen to Lana Del Rey, Southern Gothic and instrumental soundtracks exclusively) performed and Lupita, Meryl and Amy danced a little. It was awesome.
  • Have you guys seen that John Travoltaintroduction of the song from Frozen? What was he on?
  • At one point one of the recipients sang and Bill Murray leapt to his feet. That was awesome.
  • U2 also got standing ovation.
  • The award for supporting actress thankfully didn't go to Jennifer Lawrence but to Lupita Nyong'o which was met with explosion of joy in Dolby theatre. I'm just gonna throw in Benedict Cumberbatch crying during this for all of your horny mama bear instincts to kick in:
  • Lupita gave a very good speech but the winner when it comes to speeches is still Jared Leto, whose speech moved me to tears.
  • Jared also mentioned Ukraine. He was the only one who did.  I gotta tell you, European media are loving this man now - they keep showing his speech. I thought it was just wonderful how he actually acknowledged the outside world especially since apparently the show was censored in Ukraine out of the pure fear someone will mention anything. This is madness.
  • Dallas Buyers Club also won for best make up - the budget of which was $250 dollars. McConaughey gave his colleagues a standing ovation. I almost melted again.
  • There were so many random music performances - Bette Midler? Pink? I started wondering if I didn't accidentally get high.
  • Kevin Spacey presented a short clips of the Governor's ball awards where Angelina Jolie received an award for her charity work. After the clip was shown that happened:
  • Gravity scored 7 wins last night with only 3 going to 12 Years a Slave. Ellen did call them out of that in her monologue - if you don't award 12YaS you are racist. And the Academy members are scared shitless of being criticized. But apparently they are cool with being homophobes. Never Forget, Never Forgive, Brokeback Mountain. Also they got Will Smith, who just won a Razzie and is continuing his career suicide as Satan in Winter's Tale, to present Best Picture. I mean....what?
  • Cate Blanchett won. What else is new?
  • Matthew won which was awesome. DiCaprio hugged him which caused a flood of "You broke my heart, Fredo!" memes on my tumblr. Matt was great on stage, so grateful, poised and happy, mentioning his dad, thanking his family. His wife is so goddamn lucky, by the way.
  • The place went silent when McConaughey mentioned God. Come on, I'm the farthest thing from Christian but honestly? It's his speech, his win and since he is religious he can praise God all he wants. I personally hoped he would reprise his final dance from Magic Mike...but hey, I'm just happy he won.
  • Steve McQueen pretty much reprised his BAFTA speech but the high point of that BP win is that Brad Pitt finally has an Oscar.
  • Here are some picks of the dresses. Chris Hemswoth's wife's dress you guys. What. the. fuck. Also Margot Robbie looks horrible as a brunette.
  • Chris Hemsworth with his wife, Matthew McConaughey with his wife, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Sally Hawkins and Cate Blanchett, really looking like sisters in very similar outfits.
