We are in the middle of vampire craze in cinema. Ever since Twilight, there was a bit of a renaissance when it comes to vampire films - there seem to be at least three new big productions every year. From television shows like True Blood and The Vampire Diaries through European flicks like Livide and Let the Right One in to the big productions like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Underworld series, vampires are everywhere these days.

For me the best vampire film ever made is still Interview with the Vampire. It's almost 20 years old now but for me this is still the benchmark for this kind of films. Based on fantastic novel by Anne Rice the film is a very faithful adaptation and it truly captures the essence of vampire films - sensual, mysterious, fascinating. Now the director of the film, Neil Jordan, returns to vampire stories in Byzantium.
I didn't have high hopes for the movie - the release date kept being pushed back and that's never a good sign. Also even though Jordan is a fantastic director, he didn't make a movie that would be highly praised in years. The film surprised me, though. It's not anything to rave about but it kept my interest throughout and it had several quite unique things that I haven't seen in any other vampire film.

The film follows two vampires - Clara and her daughter Eleanor. From the very beginning we see that they are very different - Clara is fierce, detached and ruthless while Eleanor is shy and very introvert. Clara is the provider - she works as a dancer in the club to earn money for the two of them. In the beginning of the film a mysterious man chases Clara and then she kills him in their apartment, which prompts the two to seek new hideout, again.
The two move to small coastal town where Clara seduces a man who lives in abandoned hotel called Byzantium, thus securing a shelter for her and Eleanor. Meanwhile Eleanor is struggling with her desire to tell someone the truth about who she and her mother really are and she bonds with the local boy who takes an interest in her.

There isn't much story in Byzantium, but the events are presented in an interesting way - we start at one point and we go back through Eleanor's stories and memories and slowly everything falls into place. Usually I am a little annoyed with non-linear narrative, which is like a pandemic in recent movies, but here it worked because it made a so-so story a bit more mysterious, because as I watched the film I kept wondering why certain things were happening, only to have that answered later in the movie by the flashbacks.
Jordan is really amazing when doing this sort of thing - telling stories that are spread over vast periods of time and holding your interest throughout - Interview with the Vampire is a good example for that, another is Breakfast on Pluto. What Byzantium lacks in the story, Jordan makes up with his direction, but some of the flaws here are hard to ignore.

My problem with this bold new approach to vampire movie genre is that some of the ideas people have to bring fresh feel to the well established myth of vampire are just fucking ridiculous. So we have those two beautiful women who are immortal. Also - they can walk in the sunlight, even though they are vampires. They've been around for circa 200 years. We know Eleanor can play piano masterfully because she had all that time to perfect the skill. But instead of capitalizing on that Clara chooses to whore herself out to get some money for the two of them? Even though it makes Eleanor resent her even more? Really?
In other words my point is - I just don't buy this whole idea where vampires have money problems. I bought it in Let the Right One in, where a vampire 1. couldn't go out in the daytime 2. was forever a child, but this? I'm fairly certain Gemma Arterton could easily seduce any rich and sophisticated guy and marry him for his cash and that's not even vampire Gemma Arterton, just you know, regular human Gemma Arterton, yet I watch this film and I see her character making out with low-life creeps for money. What the hell?

Another thing is that I swear to God occasionally I watch those vampire films and some of it is just thrown in there for the sake of attracting people who will see any vampire film out there - Eleanor and Clara are immortal, drink blood and can't enter the house without invitation (very popular thing in vampire movies these days). That's it. That's not really much for vampire film, isn't? No heightened senses, no super strength, no flying. Seems to me that all of that fantastical angle is just a fog screen and they could have just as easily be fugitives, but the vampire thing was added to add some spark to this otherwise average tale.
Even with all those flaws, there are many great things in the story. The abandoned hotel is a fantastic setting, Eleanor writing her story and throwing the sheets of paper away, in the process telling it to strangers is a lovely idea as is the ritual that transforms people into vampires here. The material is really elevated by the execution and especially by the two main actresses.

Gemma Arterton, despite talking in a rather annoying accent (I don't know if it is the way she talks or just something in the movie) is very good here playing a woman determined to survive and to protect her daughter. She is quite amoral in her actions and she doesn't care about anyone but Eleanor - but you have a feeling that it is simply because she never had a chance to trust anyone in her life.
But the best performance in the movie belongs to Saoirse Ronan. She really does wonders with material given to her and she gives Eleanor a heart and soul. Tormented soul burdened with everything she experienced over the years. I admire Ronan's dedication for the part too - apparently she has learned how to play the piano for the film and it's actually her we can hear playing in the movie.

The film also has several actors, that are rather underused but manage to shine in their scenes, including Maria Doyle Kennedy and Sam Riley.Jonny Lee Miller and Tom Hollander are also in the cast but they have rather thankless roles. The worst in the cast are definitely Caleb Landry Jones, who managed to be creepy and off putting where role required the opposite of him and Uri Gavriel who played the main villain in the film and it was so fucking awful, as if he time traveled from the past and thought he was the bad guy in James Bond movie in the 80's. Stephen Rea, who usually appears in Jordan's films, would have done a much better job here.

The film is beautiful to look at, the scenery is lush and the scenes are wonderfully shot, in a very artistic way where all the details are carefully planned and everything looks almost like a painting There are a lot of close ups, particularly of Ronan's face, as well as the images of stark surroundings, which brought the cinematography of Hanna to my mind.

Byzantium is an interesting film, even though the story is far from being strong and free from plot holes. It's an enjoyable film but I think I can safely recommend it only to the fans of the main two ladies.

Michael Fassbender is in BIG trouble in new, dynamic trailer for The Counselor

The Counselor is one of my most anticipated movies this year. Having read the script I can tell you that it will either be amazing or it will be absolutely awful. The latest trailer doesn't really help me with determining which one of those it will be, but it looks like they kept some of the best parts of the script in the film.

The film, written by Cormac McCarthy and directed by Ridley Scott, revolves around a lawyer (Michael Fassbender) who gets himself and his fiance Laura (Penelope Cruz) mixed up with some really ruthless people. The film also features Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz in what will probably be an unforgettable performance, or at the very least - unforgettable character.

The film opens in US on October 25th.

  • Malcolm "darling I wouldn't fucking piss on you if you were fucking allergic to piss" Tucker is the new Doctor Who. Oh my God you guys. I made that gifset of Tucker, because you know, I love him, and someone reblogged it and added "Peter Capaldi for 12th Doctor" and I laughed because I thought haha that's a funny joke. And now it has happened? Peter Capaldi is the new Doctor? I don't watch the show but from the gifsets I see on tumblr on daily basis the vibe I get is that it's real cute and light show, so damn that is going to be very interesting. I'm definitely gonna watch his episodes!
  • And, hopefully, now millions of Doctor Who fans will watch The Thick of It. I made a wish that everyone sees it in last Friday's post and now it looks like it's finally happening.
  • So I'd like to make another wish since apparently this blog is magical. I want Idris Elba. Naked. In my house. Make it happen, universe. Or at least that thing this guy from Suits can do when he just looks at legal acts and remembers all of that. Either way I'd be happy.
  •  On the sixth gif I just want to hug him and tell him it's OK.
  • Coming down from the Fangirl Mountain of Sadness, my point is that a lot of people is watching The Thick of It now and it's awesome. Malcolm is universally beloved, sure, but you know who else is funny? Glen. And Peter. And of Course - Jaime.
  • Apparently Arnie Hammer and Johnny Depp are whining about The Lone Ranger flopping at the box office and they blame the critics for the film's failure. They went as far as to say that the critics probably wrote their reviews - get this - when they heard about the movie being made, without actually seeing it. I know mid-life crisis is a serious fucking thing but I didn't know you can actually go batshit from it, as Johnny Depp apparently did.
  • I don't know who exactly drives the bus with this whole Batman/Superman movie but that person needs to think. First Snyder as a director again? Why? Because his films are so fucking riveting and not boring and overly expensive at all? Now I'm hearing they are considering Josh Brolin or Ryan Gosling for Batman. You know one thing that would be funnier than Bale's menacing tuberculosis voice? Gosling's "I yell like a 3-year old girl with pink ribbons in my hair" scream. At least they have good ideas for Lex Luthor. Mark Strong and Bryan Cranston would both be fantastic in this part.
  • There was a lot of new trailers this week. One of those was the trailer for Thor sequel. The trailer is so-so, but Loki is in it a lot and he is always fun and Idris makes an appearance - he actually has a line of dialogue and he is not wearing his ridiculous golden costume, so = happiness! Apparently the film will still be released this year. I'm definitely seeing it as Thor was far better for me than Iron Man films and Avengers. I love chemistry between him and Jane, I hope she won't die or something.
  • Another trailer was for The Counselor as I wrote in previous post. They also released clips and one of them features Penelope Cruz as the third luckiest woman on Earth.
  • Monuments Men trailer was awful. Also - 2 split seconds of Jean Dujardin? Oh, fuck off.
  • I only saw two movies this week - Byzantium and The Call. Byzantium was pretty good and The Call was not good but it was entertaining. What the hell happened to Michael Imperioli's career?
  • Gustav has a new hairdresser - he doesn't like her because she is kinda strict with him. 45 minutes of the epic fight between him doing the opposite of what she wanted and her trying to get him to be obedient. But now he has new cute haircut which is great because the weather is crazy hot lately.
  • I caught up with Conan episodes and they were great. I heard Elysium is awful and Diego Luna was on this week promoting it, I bet that interview was better than the movie - he is so funny! There were two of my favorite sketches this week too - Clueless Gamer and Conan's new abuse of his weirdo producer Jordan Schlansky. I love those.
  • I made the above gifset, uploaded it on tumblr as I do with all my shit and now the official tumblr of the show is following me. YEY!
  • The thing I am really excited about is as usual at this time of the year the new season of American Horror Story. The show has a brilliant marketing and we already got two of the signature creepy teasers which contain abstract imagery with the clues to the story.
  • The upcoming season is entitled Coven and it is set in New Orleans. It will focus on witches and voodoo so effectively it combines two things I'm fascinated with. Also - and this is just a nerdgasm for me - the series will feature two very famous historical figures from New Orleans' history - Marie Laveau, who will be played by Angela Basset and Madame LaLaurie who will be played by Kathy Bates. LaLaurie was a sadistic woman who tortured her slaves. There are many accounts on what she did, but I bet Murphy will go with the most gruesome and horrifying one. All I'll say is - human caterpillar. Another thing is that Alexandra Breckenridge who played insanely hot maid in season 1 will be back this season, as well as Taissa Farmiga who apparently plays Frances Conroy's granddaughter. Sarah Paulson is also back and the new additions to the series include Gabourey Sidibe. I'm just so excited about all of this. Here are the pictures from the set, damn look at Frances Conroy!:

    Lovelace

Let me just start by saying - I have absolutely no problem with porn. I think everyone should be able to do what they want, as long as it involves consensus between people. You wanna do something hardcore? You wanna film it? Go ahead. That said, I don't necessarily have to feel sympathy or any respect for the people involved in porn industry.

Let's talk about Sibel Kekilli. She did a number of porn films, including some truly hardcore stuff - and when I say hardcore I mean things so far out out there, I'd rather cut off my own arms than do them. Kekilli then went on to do some films that didn't involve having sex for money and won awards. Now she is on Game of Thrones. She is continuously whining about media bringing up her porn career.  I criticize her a lot for her work in the show, because well, it's just a bad performance, but to be honest even if it was great this is a person who will never ever have my understanding, sympathy or respect.
Same goes for Linda Lovelace. Had she shot regular porn, even with 1000 men - that is one thing. But this is a person who shot bestiality flicks. With a dog. This is what essentially makes her dead to me.

Why on Earth had I taken you to those gross, disturbing depths? Because I'm gonna review this movie as a movie - a movie that may as well be entirely fictional. I don't care what is real. Also if I were to treat it as a biopic I'd have to take an issue with the movie portraying Lovelace as a victim. Things are black and white in this movie, but in real life there were shades of grey. And there is a lot missing from the film that would prevent you from sympathizing with that woman.

I liked the movie so that's why I need to treat it as fiction. In fact I think what we see in Lovelace has less right to use "based on a true story" line than The Conjuring. We follow Linda as she lives with her parents - a loving, quiet father (excellent Robert Patrick) and resentful mother (Sharon Stone). A year before the events shown in the movie Linda has given birth to a child that was put for adoption and this is the reason for the tension between her and her mother.
While hanging out with her friend Patsy (Juno Temple) Linda meets Chuck Taynor (Peter Sarsgaard, doing his creepy guy thing yet again). She is taken with him and he seems to be a perfect gentleman. Soon the two marry and Linda gets involved with porn industry when Chuck's money problems worsen. This is how she ends up making the infamous Deep Throat.

The film makes a jump half way through - first we see things as the world saw them, with sweet Linda living glamorous life of joy, carefree sex and parties with famous people. But in the second half we see what - according to Lovelace - really happened. We see the same events again but when before in the movie there was a cut, here the scene goes on, revealing rape, violence and Lovelace in tears.
The film is many things but the one thing is sure as shit is not is objective. Lovelace is shown as an innocent victim of all of this. If you just see the movie than you may buy it, but a quick venture into any Internet board going through the history of Lovelace's actions and court testimonies will show you that this is far from actual truth.

That said, Amanda Seyfried does such an amazing job I was almost close to feeling the sympathy for her character. I don't respect the people who don't respect themselves neither I respond well to movies that ignore the existence of certain events that would put a major stain on the heroine's innocence, but Seyfried acting here was so good she really melted my heart at times.
I think Seyfried is a very talented actress - I have yet to see bad performance from her and this here is her best work to date. She is so natural and likable as fun loving young woman who soon tastes misery and who will have to carry the burden of what she did through her entire life. It's a great shame the film is so uneven because Seyfried work here is award worthy.

Uneven, yes. It's painfully evident that most of the material ended up on the floor of the cutting room. It's no secret that the whole segment with Sarah Jessica Parker as Gloria Steinem was taken out entirely out of the movie. Furthermore, Chloe Sevigny appears in the film for mere 5 seconds. And that's Chloe fucking Sevigny!
All those actors show up and you can't help but feel that there was more - more scenes, more footage, but they are not in the movie for some reason. I really don't know why that is - ending credits aside, the whole film is 85 minutes long. Surely they could have added more things to it. While the first half of the film is fairly consistent, when we jump to Lovelace's side of the story the film is just all over the place.

While I'm fairly certain James Franco is in the film just to be able to say he played Hugh Hefner, it's a shame that Sharon Stone and Robert Patrick didn't have more to do. They are both clearly devoted to the parts they are playing and they are excellent as Linda's parents. The phone conversation between Linda and her father where he tells her he saw her movie is far and away the film's best scene.
Eric Roberts and Wes Bentley's parts were reduced to mere cameos. The three actors who don't have much to do but still managed to pull off good performances and add a lot of humour to the movie were Chris Noth, Hank Azaria and Bobby Cannavale as the three producers who seem to be delicate angels in comparison to Linda's abusive ass of a husband.

Adam Brody stars as Linda's likable partner in the movie, while Peter Sarsgaard is slowly becoming really tiresome - all he does is creeping out young women with weird sex stuff. He's like psychotic, perverted version of Johnny Depp in the sense it's always the same with this guy. Still, the cast elevates the movie. I'm not sure the script is to blame. I'm sure the two directors are, as they seem to have removed valuable material from the film and left it, well, merely a skeleton without much meat.
The film has great cinematography and lovely atmosphere - it really feels like it was shot in 70's with warm colors and all the colorful costumes. The music is not very memorable, though. One thing that I thought was overdone was make up - Seyfried looks absolutely horrible during polygraph scenes and the events taking place 6 years after Deep Throat and that wasn't realistic at all, considering she looked lovely in the first half of the film.

Lovelace is an interesting film, but the two reasons to see it are mostly great ambiance and fantastic cast. But sadly, you won't be presented with historical truth or exceptional film making in this one.

  • Breaking Bad is back. I only caught the new episode today - yes, this is how busy I was this week - it's already better than the previous part of the season. I realized I only want two things to happen before the end - Jesse to survive and Skyler to die. On the other hand Jesse is so far gone I don't think he can ever recover. I'm a bit shocked Hank actually told Walt he knows the truth, but then again I'm still shocked a glimpse of the book while sitting on the crapper is how he found out. Either way it led to really awesome, intense ending.
  • Gotta love the imdb board for the show. The big issues are the dropped oranges and the fact Hank didn't flush the toilet.
  • Meanwhile the filming of Game of Thrones season 4 has moved to Croatia. Am I the only one that sees....a bit of purple on Jack Gleeson's face?
  • I had a very wildintensenaked nice dream about Alexander Skarsgard. I believe in signs so I finally decided to catch up with True Blood
  • That show is so stupid but also so fun. It's a bit worrisome though how Sookie is now one of the least interesting people in the show.  I mean she was always hugely miscast (really? Anna Paquin?) but now not only is she bland, her storyline is boring and involves - and this is exactly how it sounds - vagina light. Also they clearly became even more desperate with a certain death the impact of which was taken away few scenes back. But there are still moments that make it worth watching mostly those that include Sarah Newlin. The fight between her and the Asian chick was freaking hilarious.
  • Anna Camp is so great, I hope her character won't die in finale. I also really like that dude Jessica is fucking. That is one good looking man.
  • Obviously had no time to see any movies this week but I may just watch 2 or 3 today cause after sitting down and watching 4 episodes of True Blood my brain has no power or will to study today. I'm probably going to see Mud or The Great Gatsby. The latter looks like hilarious unintentional comedy.
  • One movie I'm very excited about - and it's going to be a long wait for this one - is Maleficent. There was some sort of Disney Expo not so long ago and they screened first trailer there which is apparently awesome. That poster on the left is fan made, I think, either way it looks great. There is no official footage of Angie as Maleficent yet apart from one picture that is about year old. I heard the trailer will be attached to Thor sequel so it's yet another reason for me to go and see this movie.

Why The Great Gatsby is the funniest unintentional comedy of the year.

Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby is boring, stupid and messy but most of all - it is hilarious. The film has a terrific soundtrack and beautiful visual side, but it's a complete chore, filled with scenes that were so funny I actually roared with laughter. Even one of the scenes listed below should prevent everyone from taking this film seriously but all of those?  Add to that about hundred of times Gatsby says the words 'old sport' and what you get is a laugh riot. Wicker Man remake kind of a riot. Only Wicker Man was entertaining and Gatsby is incredibly boring, unless ridiculous things are happening. And boy is there a lot of those:

    1. Carey Mulligan making Daisy so boring, shallow and graceless you wonder why on Earth anyone would like to be around her, let alone fall for her. My favorite moments were when she started to cry out of the blue, like during the shirt throwing moment which has its own place on the list. This is the second worst performance of the year, beaten only by Gosling in Only God Forgives.
    2. Tobey McGuire acting like a 5 year old boy who saw Playboy magazine for the very first time.

    3. Whatever the hell that moment was:
    4. The first time we see Gatsby which is so ridiculously over the top I actually had to pause the film to laugh for several seconds.
    5. This fucking scene / the fact DiCaprio had better romantic chemistry with McGuire than with Mulligan.
    6. Ridiculous slow motion moments.
    7. Gatsby contemplating. While looking at the trees. You know, because it's all so deep and not about some reprehensibly spineless chick. Oh wait. It is.
    8. The tea scene which includes:
8.1. The army of servants carrying flowers because apparently the tea drinking / getting back with the old girlfriend process requires you to do that in the surroundings resembling a fucking florist.
8.2. McGuire holding cupcakes nobody gives a crap about.
    8.3. This:
    8.4. THIS:
8.5. The staredown between DiCaprio and the clock. The clock did something awful. It showed what time it was and it will pay for it.
8.6. It was too intense to take so Gatsby storms out to get all wet in the rain and returns after presumably staring at his friends. The trees.
8.7. McGuire instructing him to fix his hair, you know, because the hair is the problem here.
8.8. The epic showdown with the clock.

8.9. Nick trying to make noise so that Gatsby and Daisy would stop flirting and start to give crap about him. He failed and I still cannot believe that scene actually happened. Someone wrote it, someone read it in the script and gave all those money for the movie. And as if it wasn't funny enough they got McGuire to play that part.
    9. Gatsby fangirling over THE LIGHT.

    10. The shirt throwing scene. You got the love of your life back to you house? Let's bury her under you shirts while her cousin watches!

    11. Gatsby showing Daisy the shrine he made for her. This is like straight from serial killer movie.
    12. Nick and Daisy dancing to ORGAN MUSIC..
    13. Daisy mouthing "I love you" to Gatsby despite the fact her husband is few feet away and he can clearly hear them. Adding dumb to the list of qualities Daisy has.
    14. The whole 'if you loved him for a day it means we can't be togther' deal. Fuck the war and 5 lost years THIS is really the issue we should be focusing on.

    15. Gatsby yelling after Daisy's husband continuously insulted him and everyone reacting as if he just took a massive shit in the middle of the room.
    16. The accident scene. Let's run straight at the car and shout your lover's name. Surely nothing bad will happen. Adding dumber than Daisy to the list of qualities Daisy's husband insignificant lover character who becomes significant in the end oh my how exciting has.
    17. The fact Baz Luhrmann used that moment to put in even more visual flare and heavy handed symbolism. Adding heartless to the qualities Baz Luhrmann has.

    18. Gatsby hiding in the bushes. Where is Waldo? style.

    19. The flashback in which we see Daisy was the one driving the car and Lurhmann shows us the accident and symbolism again, in case anyone missed it. Adding terrible fucking driver to the list of qualities Daisy has.
    20. Gatsby taking his sweet time before he dies even though he was shot in the heart.

    Richard Armitage
22 August, 1971 (Leicester, Leicestershire, England, UK)

Today let's celebrate the talent and the general hotness of Richard Armitage. He was the best thing about last year's Hobbit and now he is being considered to be new Batman, I'm fairly certain he would be the best thing about that one too. Shockingly he doesn't seem to be in high demand after The Hobbit, which is odd considering his natural charisma and indisputable talent.

He appeared in several TV series, including Spooks and the first season of Strike Back, which unfortunately he had to leave to shoot The Hobbit. I'm saying unfortunately, because his character there - John Porter - is my favorite among the ones he played and his departure was handled very poorly in the show. Hopefully, there are a lot of great roles in his future, because I really want to see more of him in movies. Or - you know, Game of Thrones. They still didn't cast any of the Greyjoys, so I'm just throwing it out there.

  • Before I get all upset and sweary regarding new Batman, let's get everything else out of the way.
  • We have new The Counselor trailer. I really like the song, which apparently is Awolnation - Sail, which is 3 years old but it's the first time I'm hearing it. I don't live in a cave or something, but the only music I listen to is Lana Del Rey, soundtracks and everything that I think sounds like it could be heard on the streets of small cities of Louisiana and Ireland. The other music playing in previous trailers was much darker and energetic, so I dug that but Sail makes the trailer feel really elegant and somewhat sinister. I like the trailer mostly because we got to see more of Cameron Diaz. She is going to be awesome in this and I love her earrings, her hair style and eye make up, so that's a big plus too. I also love that Bardem is visibly scared shitless of her when she tells him about axe going through the door. My favorite moments shown so far is from the previous trailer, the frantic shot of Malkina on the car:
  • Today it was announced the movie will be rated R which makes me think we won't see the car scene actually play out, because that would give the movie very justified NC-17 rating.
  • This is how huge Breaking Bad is - Dean Norris, who plays Hank, is in this trailer for a second and people go nuts. The movie also features Natalie Dormer in a small, but fun role.
  • Speaking of Natalie, it was announced that she joined the cast of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. She will play Cressida "a Capitol director who joins the rebellion to film propaganda shorts about Katniss in order to energize the rebels." Well, I do hate The Hunger Games, but I will see that just for her.
  • Marion Cotillard replaced Natalie Portman in new Macbeth movie where Fassy will play Macbeth. This is just superb. Portman is way too innocent and well, childish, to pull this off and Marion plays wonderful villains, The Dark Knight Rises aside. Let's just hope Fassbender stays on board of this one.
  • Some new photos emerged from Long Walk to Freedom. Are they serious with this make up? This is worse than J. Edgar. It's not about it being old age make up - it's about it being a ridiculous, horribly fake old age make up. It's as if someone shat on Mona Lisa.
  • Speaking of Idris, he has new movie lined up called Beasts of No Nation. Apparently it's based on the book. That is the extent of my knowledge on that subject.
  • Rambo is getting a TV series and James Franco will have his own reality show. This is the penalty for the sins of this world.
  • Things took turn for the worse this week as my studying of pointless bullshit I forget after 3 days anyways legal acts is now taking more hours a day than I actually spend on sleeping. I haven't even seen new Breaking Bad yet. It's a great show but it's not like Game of Thrones where I would literally have to see new episode live no matter what was going on the day after, and when it airs it's the middle of the night here.
  • There are actual paragraphs about bee hives in the civil law code. This is a fucking nightmare.
  • Meanwhile, Gustav has spent all week long being extra friendly to people. Normally he just jumps on them and wiggles his tail when they pet him but lately he started taking it to another level. As soon as someone starts playing with him he turns over on his back and lies there as if he was in porn movie, waiting for someone to rub his tummy. I used the phrase "stop exposing yourself to strangers!" 10 times this week alone and it's only Friday. He also refuses to sleep on his bed and finds all sorts of possible spots to take a nap on.
  • The only film I managed to see this week was We're the Millers. I gave it 5/10 since it was only slightly amusing and forgettable. Kathryn Hahn and Nick Offerman rescued the movie. Emma Roberts sucks so much, I hope her character dies somewhere in the beginning of new American Horror Story. It's bad enough she got the job because of her boyfriend but in addition she is also a terrible actress.
  • Last week I had a dream with Alexander Skarsgard and me taking a shower together. This week I had a dream Mads Mikkelsen tried to eat me. Literally. Still, it's preferable to me having dreams where I read legal acts. That is just psychotic.
  • Let's talk about True Blood finale. This is the new definition of stupid. You ask me to define stupid, I'll screen you that finale. Good Lord, it's like the writers dropped more acid than usual while writing this one. Time jumps, making pointless villain even more pointless and dumb, Bill writing a book, vampire volleyball, fucking hell!
  • Wait, it gets better - the finale was so bad that it even managed to ruin Alexander Skarsgard'sfull frontal nudity. Seriously. First of all - you use that moment to do some stupid cliffhanger whether or not he lives or dies? Second of all - you ruin that cliffhanger 2 days later when you have the writer state Eric is alive and obviously human intelligence - which the writers of this show do not have - tells you they simply didn't know if Skarsgard will come back to do that shitty show next year so they shot it just in case and now it's just a lame ass cliffhanger with no tension and no logic? Third of all - Eric actually fucking flown to Sweden with a lounge chair and a book to sunbathe naked on top of the mountain? Fourth of all - you just know that the fan theory that to prevent burning any more Eric buried himself in the snow will not be half as retarded as whatever the writers will eventually come up with to solve that fiasco.
  • And what is up with all those people complaining his penis is uncut? I'm European. It's normal here. That is what we see around here. I don't mean guys with their dicks out on the streets, but you know what I mean. This is how the Lord intended it. Let's just be glad we saw it and pretend it was under different circumstances in much less moronic show.
  • In really bad news, Paul W.S. Anderson is ready to unleash new shit on this world and it's called Pompeii. The fact that Jon Snow aka Kit Harington is in it is not that shocking, he only does crappy stuff outside of Game of Thrones. But what the hell happened to Emily Browning's career? She is better than that. Unfortunately she is in it, so I'm gonna have to watch this one.
  • In another really bad news we have a new Batmanand it's one of the worst casting decisions in a long while. It's Ben Affleck. Had they chosen Gosling or Brolin it would have been bad, but Affleck? The people behind this movie should really hang out with True Blood writers since they are both taking potentially fun things and ruining them with their terrible decision making. With Snyder as a director there was a slim chance the film will be good but with Darefuckingdevil as Batman?
  • Again let me fall into the state of shock and amazement that things like that happen when Idris Elba and Richard Armitage exist and would probably be up for playing the part.
  • This decision is so catastrophic it once again knocked Affleck to the pit of ridicule. He won people's hearts in Oscar season and now he is back into Gigli category. The only positive here is that if the film is worse than Batman & Robin maybe Joel Schumacher will finally catch a break. I really can't believe Affleck took the part. He is back in the ridicule town, perhaps permanently. Taking a part of iconic character is always risky because nerds are truly passionate and unstable - look at me, I'm not even planning on seeing this movie in theater and yet I bitch about it. Even if actor is right for the part people complain but when he is wrong - and a huge step down from previous actor who played the character - things go crazy. I mean there is already a petition to choose another actor for Batman instead of him.

10 reasons why I'm looking forward to The Counselor

    $

Ridley Scott's The Counselor is one of my most anticipated movies of the year. I read the script for this one, written by well known author Cormac McCarthy, a while back and recently I re-read it after seeing the film's latest, terrific trailer. The film definitely has potential to be among the best movies of the year and here are few reasons why I can't wait to see it:

    10. Dean Norris, Goran Visnjic and Natalie Dormer
It's always fun to see those three actors on screen so I'm definitely looking forward to their performances here, however brief they will be. It's still not clear who Visnjic is playing, perhaps a priest? That is a great scene and he would be excellent in the part.

    9. Ridley Scott's direction
Scott is a fantastic director and even if the script has problems he is able to make a wonderful movie. Here the script is one of the film's strongest points so I can't wait to see what he does with it.

    8. Changes from the script
As great as the script is, there are some problems there. The scenes including people other than main characters are hugely messy and some of the sequences go way too long, mainly the opening scene with Laura and Counselor in bed. I hope most of that was shortened for the sake of the movie. I also hope they made some things a bit clearer - I read that thing twice and I'm still not entirely sure what went down there. It's evident from the trailers changes were indeed made, mainly from the added scene between Malkina and Reiner (when the axe comes through the door, I'll already be gone).

    7. The Bolito
The bolito is a device that decapitates a person and then self-destructs. It's a horrifying concept and I'm curious how they handled that on screen.

    6. The Cheetahs
Cameron Diaz's character Malkina has two pet cheetahs that are often by her side. I hope they are featured prominently in the movie and that my favorite scene - when she sees one of them on the street and has tears in her eyes - made it to film.

    5. The Cinematography
The director of photography here is Dariusz Wolski, who did a terrific job in Prometheus, Sweeney Todd, The Mexican and The Rum Diary as well as in Pirates of the Caribbean films. It's already quite impressive looking movie just from the trailers - the dynamic shots of running cheetahs, focusing the camera on the faces of the actors and the infamous car scene which appears to be shot in a very frantic, scary way.

    4. Javier Bardem's performance
While there are many great characters which I'm sure the actors will raise to great performances, Bardem's Reiner is the most layered one. He tells awesome stories, he seems like a lot of fun and he is capable of feeling shock and fear, which in the film with so many tough, uncompromising characters is unique. Bardem has the most to play here in terms of range and it looks like he is doing an awesome job.

    3. The Car scene
I read a lot of sick things but this one just blew my mind. The film received very hard R rating which probably means we will just see the beginning of the scene (any more and it's NC-17, unless the camera only shows the faces) and Reiner will tell us what happened in the story he tells to the Counselor. Still, this is messed up and if I read Diaz dropped out because she didn't want to do that scene, I'd understand. She went ahead and stayed and apparently shot at least a bit of it, so kudos to her for her courage.

    2. Fassy's breakdown scene
This is the most emotional and possibly the darkest moment of the story and Fassbender completely kills it in trailer alone. This is going to be close to the magnitude of his breakdown in Shame, I can feel it.

    1. Cameron Diaz as Malkina
Malkina is a fascinating character. She is a tech-savvy, VERY sexually adventurous sociopath. She is few steps ahead in the game and her own boyfriend fears her because she is capable of everything and he doesn't know "how much she knows". Malkina is seemingly lurking in the shadows but in the reality she has all the answers. In the script she was described as a sexy, dark-haired woman from Buenos Aires. Initially she was going to be played by Angelina Jolie - who fits the description better than Diaz - Jolie dropped out and I keep wondering if it wasn't because of the car moment. Anyways, Diaz sees to be doing a great job based on the trailers - she is mysterious, scary, controlling. The fact that she is an actress who is mostly known from comedy roles will make it even more effective because people won't suspect that she is capable of playing such a character. If the film has a shot at any major nominations it's definitely her and Bardem.

The Counselor opens in US on October 25h and in most European countries on November 14th.

My open letter to Anna Gunn

       Mrs. Gunn,

While I always and consistently disliked Skyler White I also had a profound respect for you for not making a spectacle out of yourself and not complaining about how many people dislike your character. I especially respected you for not repeating Vince Gilligan ludicrous and highly offensive allegations that Skyler is hated because of the misogyny.

Being disliked for the character you are playing is a professional hazard when you play what - as you yourself put it - a villain to the show's protagonist. Unfortunately, you wrote NY times article that is not only completely missing the point as to why people dislike your character but also you made some comments that are genuinely offensive to women who are actual victims of misogyny all around the World.

First of all, calling Skyler a strong woman is an insult to strong women everywhere. She is not a strong woman. Strong women are not hypocrites who condemn what their husbands are doing at one moment and use it to their advantage the next. Strong women don't punish their unborn, defenseless children for their own mistakes. Strong women don't emasculate their husbands from the very start. If Skyler packed the bags, took the kids and said Walt fuck you and your money and then left, I'd be the first one to cheer and root for her. But she didn't. She is weak. And if she wasn't supposed to be weak - the writers failed.

You wrote:  As an actress, I realize that viewers are entitled to have whatever feelings they want about the characters they watch. But as a human being, I’m concerned that so many people react to Skyler with such venom. Could it be that they can’t stand a woman who won’t suffer silently or “stand by her man”? That they despise her because she won’t back down or give up? Or because she is, in fact, Walter’s equal?

And as a human being I reserve the right, Mrs. Gunn, to judge, condemn and hate a woman who is smoking during pregnancy, who eats unhealthy things solely on purpose to punish the child she has with a  man she currently hates. An unborn, defenseless child. Her own flesh and blood. I reserve the right to judge a woman who cheats on her dying husband, who attempts to take his kids away from him but lacks the guts to carry the deal through and really separate herself and her kids from this man, in the process putting her family and her own son through hell.

The issue with your character is not that she "doesn't back down" - it's because her perpetual indecisiveness is creating problems for everyone around her. Skyler caused pain to her son, her lover, her family. Unlike another character on the show - Marie - Skyler doesn't show much support or warmth for anyone. It's something you should discuss with the writers, not blame the fans for how they respond to character that comparing to others, comes off as cold. The writers didn't give Skyler anything to balance out her difficult personality. Don't blame the fans for the writers' mistakes.

Also, Mrs. Gunn, currently Skyler is standing by Walt. She takes advantage of his fortune and she helps him launder the money. The problem here is not the fact she won't suffer silently. The problem here is that she is tragically inconsistent and in the process - comes off as extremely weak person.

Your comments where you say Skyler is Walt's equal and you comparing her character to Carmella Soprano - a legitimately strong, consistent female character - came off as your wishes. In reality I don't think anyone can view your character as Walt's equal, a man that is, thanks to the writing on the show, portrayed in much more sympathetic light. Is it right? No, but again - discuss it with your writers. As for Carmella - no offense to you, but neither Skyler nor your performance - as great as it is - deserve to be put in the same sentence as Edie Falco's legendary character.

Apparently you received death threats which is obviously hugely alarming. But you seem to put all the fans of the show who dislike your character into the bag of misogynists who want to kill you. That's very harmful and you are alienating fans of the show even further from your character. And welcome to the Internet. Things like that sadly happen.

But I finally realized that most people’s hatred of Skyler had little to do with me and a lot to do with their own perception of women and wives.

The most disturbing part of it, though, is that this character is now made into some sort of a martyr by your fans. There are some great female characters out there that people love - but you and others seem to conveniently leave this fact out while defending Skyler. Skyler being made out to some sort of icon of people hating "strong female characters" is wrong and disgusting. There are actual women - not some made up TV series characters - who are the victims of actual misogyny. You and your fans throwing that term so lightly when it comes to a matter so insignificant as fans of TV show hating a character is very saddening.

It has nothing to do with the gender - if Skyler was Walt's gay partner, I assure you, I'd hate that person just the same because of the actions of that character. Using the word "misogyny" here is just saddening because real misogyny is going on out there and affects women who I'm sure are far, far stronger than your character.

I cannot help but feel that you feel a bit left out. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are universally adored. But look at them - just as the writers of the show made their characters more accessible, they are accessible too - chatting with fans on social media sites, acting like regular guys. I'm not saying you should do that, it's your choice, but when you play a difficult character and the first thing you do to reach out to people is complaining about the fans of the show, it seems to me it's a bad move to win their hearts.

Lastly, look at another character that people passionately hate - Cersei Lannister played by Lena Headey in Game of Thrones. I don't hear about people sending Lena Hadey death threats. I don't see people filling the boards with hate messages for her. When someone calls her a bitch  Lena just smiles. She turns it into a humorous situation and people love her for it. By making situations like that into anecdote she tells during interviews, she takes the power away from those who call her a "bitch" and hate her.

If you make fun of this and trivialize it, it won't have power. By falsely adding misogynistic agenda to people simply not liking a TV character you are making things far too dark, you add power to them and you are only making things worse.

My advice to you Mrs. Gunn would be to take pride in your performance and you creating a character that people feel so passionately about. Truth is that Skyler has a lot of fans out there. And your performance made them love her. Focus on the good, not the bad and keep in mind it's just a TV show and if you think you are a victim of "misogyny", mam, you don't really know what misogyny is.

      Sincerely,
a female fan of the show.

    •  Venice film festival has started and everyone is shitting themselves over Gravity - a film that I still don't give a damn about. What I can't wait for, though is Under the Skin, which premiered yesterday on Telluride film festival. The very first reviews are positive and apparently Scarlett is doing an amazing job in the movie - some even said this is her best performance.
    • Let me just tell you now - do NOT read any plot summaries of that movie. In the book the whole intrigue is revealed after 100 pages in and here they are ruining it for people.
    • Unfortunately, from what I read it seems they changed the plot a LOT, which is not a good sign - the novel is absolutely excellent and I read it in one day. The more reviews I read the more it seems the film is only inspired by the novel. That is a big shame. I bet they stripped the story of what made it into such a disturbing tale and it's going to be Johansson wandering around, being all mysterious. I hope the reason for which Isserley (Laura in the movie, hell, they even changed her name) picks up all those men was kept at the very least. And if they reveal 'vodsel' the way they do it in the book, it may actually be this year's scariest film. But with my luck this will be a good movie, but a terrible fucking adaptation that has very little to do with the wonderful source material which I loved.
    •  I read a tweet from a person who said she liked the movie but she wanted to leave because it has infant drowning, dog dying and a rape scene. The tweet didn't mention the most gruesome part of the story, though, and I really don't think they could have avoided it as it is a crucial sequence. There was no infant drowning in the book - I hate this trend of adding shocking and grim things to already shocking and grim story.
    • Also - the dog didn't die in the novel. The protagonist simply had a dream it may die. If the scene with the dog dying is not a dream sequence...can you imagine how pissed off I'm gonna be? I'm still grieving after seeing The Hunt and The Conjuring and it was weeks ago.
    •  New teaser for American Horror Story: Coven showed up and it's entitled Stakes. This show is what is keeping me alive while I'm dealing with the horrible 9 month-long wait for Game of Thrones.
    • I decided there is absolutely no way I can swing watching Breaking Bad each week, so I'm just gonna wait till October and see the whole season at once.
    • Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have been asked to host Golden Globe ceremony again. This has to happen. They were amazing.
    • Look at Clooney in Venice. Fucking hell. WHY? He was all over the news this week, it's so distracting - how can you do anything when you can just stare at him?
    • Also apparently 'a local lawyer' reportedClooney for driving a water taxi?! Why can't I be 'a local lawyer' in such situation? Never mind the fact I would never report him, I'm not in Venice, and despite studying maritime law and getting an A from the exam I remember nothing. Kids, listen to aunt Maggie. Collage is useless.
    • Some very bad news for the institution of marriage - Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci broke up and few days later so did Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. If Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally aka the best marriage in the world ever break up, I swear to God I'm never getting married.
    • Christopher Nolanis smartly abandoningthe sinking shipSuperman vs Batman project. In what I believe is still unconfirmed news, Bryan Cranston has joined the project as Lex Luthor. Did Ben Affleck offered him a month on his private yacht for that or something?
    • Unfortunately, Nolan's other ship - Interstellar's rumoured plot is awful.
    • James Spader will play lead villain in the second Avengers movie. This is excellent.

    • Ladies and Gentlemen we have actual photos from the set of Game of Thrones season 4. The filming started in Croatia this week and we can see Gwendoline Christie and Natalie Dormer yet again having launch with her grandma Queen of Thorns, probably plotting against or joking about Lannisters while they are at it. Apparently Natalie is yet again wearing the variation of the very same dress she wore in season 3. Jesus Christ, people, there are other colors than teal. Can't you make some other dresses for her? How about green? It's Tyrell color! Also can someone hide in the bushes and snap a photo of Lena Headey in her costume? Cersei has the best dresses.
    • Speaking of Game of Thrones cast, based on what they are posting on twitter and instagram they are continuously partying - either in the pubs or in the hotel rooms, where apparently they gather around to watch new episodes of Breaking Bad. GoT cast has more free time than I have.
    • Now on to the clusterfuck - several days ago it was announced that the role of Tommen (Cersei's son) was recast. Today it was announced that the role of Khaleesi's sex toy Daario was recast - he now will be played by Michiel Huisman, who apparently stars on HBO show Treme and sucks in it. I fucking hate recasts - they really take you away from the show and all the puzzling omissions and changes are seriously piling up in that series. So several hours ago I started whining about all those recasst and the fact that the one role that should be recast - The Mountain - wasn't. And now I see this. Actual magical powers. Again.
    • So my birthday is next week.

    • Yeah.
    • 4 more weeks to the new season of Parks and Recreation. Tatiana Maslamy, from the show Orphan Black, which I still haven't seen, will guest star as Aziz Ansari's love interest. She seems to be getting along with Aubrey Plaza and Rashida Jones.
    • I managed to see two movies this week - Mud, which was excellent and I should post the review for this one during the weekend, and Star Trek Into Darkness, which was horribly boring and I only managed to watch the whole thing because of hilarious Simon Pegg.

After a year or so of having literally 3 stills from the movie, we finally got the first teaser for Jonathan Glazer's (very loose) adaptation of Michel Faber's novel Under the Skin. The first thing that strikes you is how incredibly surreal it all looks - the cinematography looks excellent, as does Scarlett Johansson as a mysterious woman who picks up hitchhikers...and they are never seen or heard of again.

Under the Skin screened during Telluride film festival last week and it will have its official premiere during Venice film festival tomorrow.

    • I haven't read 50 Shades of Grey. I'm not interested in something that is apparently badly written and preys on what teenage chicks think is porn. But it does look like it can be made into one of my favorite types of movies - so bad that is is fucking funny.
    • Dakota Johnson was cast as the main chick, I do not know who she is and I only barely remember her 30 seconds of screen time in 21 Jump Street. What's very odd is that someone relatively famous and not horrible took the part of Christian Grey - Charlie Hunnam. Granted, Hunnam is not a very good actor, but he seems like  a nice person so it's a shame his career won't survive starring in that joke. I mean this thing is basically Twilight fanfic. Robert Pattinson who is a good actor will probably never escape his beginnings, so I'm certain Hunnam won't. You guys should read this article on Bret Easton Ellis and some of the madness that surrounds 50 Shades, this is all fairly surreal, especially that Ellis is a fan of this crap. Also - Hunnam is on Sons of Anarchy. My God. Those bikers are gonna kill him.
    • Check out this hilarious new poster for Thor The Dark World. Natalie!
    • While we are at unintentionally hilarious matters, Tyler Perry was cast in David Fincher's film Gone Girl. What the hell.
    • I have not seen any films this week but I did watch the roast of James Franco on my birthday, because it features a lot of people I love and it looked like it could be funny. It really was and what made it even funnier was seeing Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen and Bill Hader crying from laughter. The whole thing was truly epic and it only made me love everyone involved, well except for Franco, more. Hader's line about Franco being on the road to killing several people in forest fire while trying to make an experimental Vine video made me laugh so hard I actually had to pause it for a minute. Franco's 90-year old grandma was there, laughing at the dick jokes. That's badass!
    • We had a lot of new posters this week. First, the official poster for American Horror Story: Coven is absolutely incredible. But why the fuck is this twit Emma Roberts mentioned on it and not Frances Conroy? This is an outrage. What's even a bigger outrage is the awful poster for The Counselor. Are they kidding with that? I would do a better job at making the poster on my birthday and I was falling down drunk.
    • And here's new, fairly horrifying teaser for Coven:
    • Here are some unofficial posters for season 4 of Game of Thrones. I think someone not associated with network made them but they are so good HBO should think about using those.
    • Speaking of, the cast continues to party hard - they even brought young Sophie Turner with them! There are also some new photos of the amphitheatre where the big trial by combat will be shot. This is going to be like Gladiator level of fucking awesome. The thing you can see in the circle is House Martell banner. Even my photoshop skills couldn't enhance it better but it looks really nice. It's a yellow spear going through black sun on red background.
    •  While we are on the subject of awesome people in TV series, Aaron Paul is an actual gift from God for humanity. He is such a super nice dude. He takes photos of himself with people who deliver him pizza, he tweets with his fans, he calls people bitch when they ask him to. So cool. Dean Norris is also on twitter and he too is hilarious.
    • We got new trailer for Gravity, which is actually the first trailer for that movie I liked. Looks very intense. Another trailer that premiered wasn't as much of a trailer as the mixed footage from Under the Skin. Well it looks like the movie and the book will have 2 maybe 3 scenes in common, but the trailer has great cinematography and really creepy score so I can't wait.
    • Speaking of Scarlett Johansson, Venice film festival brought a mixed bag of news for her male fans. On one hand, I've heard from many people she does full frontal nudity in Under the Skin so that's gonna make everyone happy. On another - she is engaged. I'm sure nudity will make up for that, though.
    • I've been catching up with Archer because I need a lot of comedy in my life right now and it's such a hilarious series. Hell, even Bryan Cranston had a guest appearance in season 3!
    • Speaking of - Cranston is NOT going to play Lex Luthor. Thank God, we are back to the state where I do not need to see this movie.
    • So I had another dream where I was running from Mads Mikkelsen because he tried to eat me. What's the disturbing part of that sentence and that dream? The running from part. Seriously, he is so fucking hot.
    • I figured I'm having those borderline psychotic dreams because I didn't finish the first season of Hannibal, so I'm catching up, very slowly though, because it's disturbing as fuck as whenever I see him  I just hear Nine Inch Nails's Closer in my head and I'm rooting for him to eat everyone.
    • The work on season 2 already began and today Bryan Fuller posted this. God bless you, sir.
    • I also plan on seeing more of his movies, my friend recommended Royal Affair but I heard something about execution and Von Trier is the producer, so I can't handle that shit right now. Recommend me something, he can even play someone incredibly creepy IF at any point of the film he is shirtless.

      Saturday TV Special: Hannibal

Plot: The series is based on characters and elements appearing in the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris and focuses on the budding relationship between FBI special investigator Will Graham who has unique ability to emphasize with serial killers in a very unusual way and Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist destined to become Graham's most cunning enemy.

Structure: Despite each episode basically having 'killer of the week' pattern, most of those are usually connected to Hannibal who occasionally kills someone in the way the other kills occurred because, you know, it's an easy kill and he needs to have a nice dinner.

Verdict: When I first heard of the series I was very skeptical. A series about Hannibal Lecter by Bryan Fuller who made the most adorable show ever, Pushing Daisies? A series about a guy who eats people to air on NBC? How tame and silly does it sound? Well, turns out I was wrong.

Fuller's imagination runs deeper and darker than I assumed and I'm downright shocked by how much gore and fucked up stuff they get way with. Does it really air on NBC? And I'm not talking about fucked up stuff like in crude waste of Kevin Bacon's time also known as The Following, they really mixed dark and crazy in inspired way here. Hannibal cutting lungs, statue made out of human remains, bodies made to look like angels, girls impaled on antlers, Glasgow smile - that and more occurs in only 13 episodes. Add to that the fact the series is shot in an incredible way - it is packed with surreal images and the way the bodies are arranged often looks like art. Creepy dreams, the mysterious stag that appears out of nowhere and obviously the very dishes Hannibal is making - all of that is shown in an amazing and haunting way.

There are some problems and I really hope they will disappear in season 2 - the forensic guys who analyze the evidence are basically puppets with no development (and it's good, as I don't care about them) and the tale of young psycho Abigail taken under Hannibal's wing is very annoying  and tired plot device. Thank goodness for Fishburne's agent Crawford, he is probably the most likable person in the show and sometimes I even root for the good guys here. He is actually excellent here and his real life wife Gina Torres plays his wife on the show - they have one truly amazing scene together that is probably the most moving moment of the series so far.

Obviously once someone touches the material that was already made into film, a very acclaimed one too, people get worried. Fuller made the right choice -  Mikkelsenis amazing  He is a great actor and he really makes Hannibal irresistibly charming and so sophisticated I feel bad when I eat a simple sandwich while watching the show (it is so gross at times but seeing all those dishes makes you very hungry). His character is handled in a very effective way because you don't actually see him kill - most of it is implied (sometimes in the form of his hilarious one liners).

There are few instances in the series that his true nature is shown which were mostly necessary kills to avoid being caught. The scene where he overpowers Anna Chlumsky's character was insane - he strangled her so she would lose consciousness but he did it with such peace and tenderness, almost respecting her for the fact that she was so close to catching him.

He actually makes Hannibal calmer and more collected than Hopkins ever did - I read Fuller's take on this today and that's just spot on - What I love about Mads's approach to the character is that, in our first meeting, he was adamant that he didn't want to do Hopkins or Cox. He talked about the character not so much as 'Hannibal Lecter the cannibal psychiatrist', but as Satan – this fallen angel who's enamoured with mankind and had an affinity for who we are as people, but was definitely not among us – he was other. I thought that was a really cool, interesting approach, because I love science fiction and horror and – not that we'd ever do anything deliberately to suggest this – but having it subtextually play as him being Lucifer felt like a really interesting kink to the series. It was slightly different than anything that's been done before and it also gives it a slightly more epic quality if you watch the show through the prism of, 'This is Satan at work, tempting someone with the apple of their psyche'. It appealed to all of those genre things that get me excited about any sort of entertainment.

This is so true. He's like from different species. He makes every person in the show look like white trash.

Whom you may recognize: Hugh "babyface" Dancy who is actually not bad here and Mads Mikkelsen as the two main characters, Laurence Fishburne as Will's boss, Gillian Anderson as Hannibal's shrink, Caroline Dhavernas from Fuller's previous show Wonderfalls and Eddie Izzard and Lance Henriksen as season 1 most memorable guest villains.
Who will like it? Fans of visually striking series and good thrillers with a fair dose of psychology in them.
When and where? 1st season was released on DVD on September 2, 2nd season is currently in pre-production stage.

      The Hunt

There is a number of movies that genuinely infuriated me. Sometimes it's because they end up being disappointments when I wanted them to be great. Sometimes it's because they are a waste of my time. But there are actual great films that infuriate me so much, I'm angry just thinking about them weeks, months, years after seeing them. Those are the films that accurately show that the majority of human race is weak, contemptible and genuinely pathetic.

The Hunt shows you there is good in this world - in this film personified by the protagonist Lucas, who is kind, loving, sweet. A guy so very gentle, that his own modesty stands in a way of him fighting back against injustice until he is pushed to the breaking point. Yet even though The Hunt shows you that good, noble people exist, its poignant and brave final scene portrays accurately that the noble and the good always have to fear the shadows of the disgraceful and prejudiced. And it won't ever change.
The Hunt follows a teacher named Lucas (Mads Mikkelsen, in the most powerful performance of the year so far). Lucas is an all around nice guy who has a lot of friends and who is adored by the children in the school. Unfortunately, his best friend's daughter Klara adores him a bit too much. When she gives him a small paper heart Lucas politely gives it back to her, explaining to Klara why it's not appropriate. In childish retaliation Klara tells a lie that leads the townsfolk to completely destroy Lucas's life.

There are many things that make me angry in this story. The fact that I can't find the villain is a big source of frustration. I can't hate Klara - she is 5 years old and she obviously doesn't understand how severe the consequences of her words are. She felt hurt and she said something, something that was planted in her mind by her older brother who irresponsibly - and also not realizing the possible consequences - showed her a glimpse of a porn picture. They are children. How can we be mad at the children?
Fortunately my frustration - and I can't remember the last time I was this frustrated while watching the movie - was unleashed on the adults whom I hated deeply and passionately whenever I saw their actions (with the exception of Klara's father). Children don't know the consequences, adults should. Children don't think what their actions may do to people, adults should.

On the other hand there was an obstacle to fully hating those who jumped to conclusions about Lucas so fast - they cared for the kids. They didn't want anything bad to happen to them. How can it be wrong? And more importantly - how can a person whose young kid's well being is on the line can remain open minded enough to even try and listen to the adult who might have caused them harm?
But what cannot be excused when subject of such severe allegations arises is the incompetence. I can forgive people not wanting to listen to Lucas's side of the story at first. I can forgive Klara's parents who immediately assumed their daughter was telling the truth. What I can't forgive, though, are the employees in the school whose incompetence and blatant stupidity was close to making me physically sick.

That was the most frightening part of the movie for me. How much power such people have. Early in the movie the principal arranges the meeting between psychologist and Klara. Psychologist is suggesting the answers to Klara and he is so blatantly fucking horrible at his job and such a disgrace to his profession I kept fantasizing that I stepped into this movie and bashed his head in the wall.
The principal is another one - without properly investigating the case she assumed Klara was telling the truth and she gathered the parents and talked about Klara's lie not as if it was an allegation - she was presenting it as a fact. Those two people infuriated me so much that if this movie ended with the school catching on fire and them burning alive, it would still be an easy way out.

It's horrifying. Horrifying that people out there do not think what they do to others. How much they can harm the innocent. How irreversible what they are doing can be. The lack of thinking, the lack of empathy and simple human intelligence in those people made me wanna punch the wall. Especially that they jumped to conclusions so quickly when it came to the person they have known for years.
I can't even write about what happens to Lucas's adorable dog. I just can't.

It's rare that I notice something like this but this movie has a perfect title. The people in Lucas's town stalk him, harass him, corner him and wound him - just like they would to an animal during hunting, hoping that it gives up and loses the will to fight.
But these people forgot about one thing decent human beings have - dignity. And Lucas doesn't let go of his dignity for a second during this story. It was so admirable, the peace and solemnity radiating from him while he was going through all of that, holding on to his innocence. Some might have been frustrated with Lucas not fighting back more decisively but I thought it was a reflection of his own good nature. Lucas just assumed that people will come to their senses. How can his friends think he is guilty, they can't do that, can they? They have known him all those years, they must know he didn't do this, don' t they? They must know he couldn't harm anyone? Unfortunately, Lucas was wrong when answering all those questions.

It's very rare that I actually find my legal training useful while watching a movie but The Hunt is an exception. The fundamental rule of the law is to assume someone is innocent until they are proven guilty. Do you know why it's so important? Because it's the most difficult thing to do. Expect people won't judge a person who is suspected of doing a horrible thing. Nobody in Lucas's village was able to look past the accusations (except for his girlfriend and his son)  and that's why, knowing how hard it is to be unbiased, the film's most powerful scene was even more powerful for me.
In what is the finest acted out scene I've seen probably since McQueen's Shame, Lucas gathers all his remaining strength and goes to the church where most of the townsfolk are gathered. Klara's father Theo who was Lucas's best friend before all of this happened is there. Theo remarked early in the movie that it is impossible for Lucas to lie. All you need to do to see the truth is to look into his eyes. And when he does so in the church, he sees the truth.

Now, if you didn't see this movie and only read that description here it may seem naive to you. A proof of man's innocence hiding in his eyes? But it truly is what a proof of innocence is - a person who knows the accused, seeing something that for them is enough of the proof. The police can make their claims, the courts can give verdicts but in the end people will draw their own conclusions and the prejudice will go on unless they have seen the proof of innocence with their own eyes.
The viciousness of the attacks of people who used to be Lucas's friends is so overwhelming you just want to hold him and tell him it will be all right. But it's not going to be because no matter what, people will always wonder whether he was guilty or not, even if Klara's own father believes in Lucas's innocence.

I read a lot of people's reactions about this movie and I'm fairly shocked some expected the twist in the end where it is implied Lucas was guilty. Mikkelsen's beautiful portrayal of this sweet man aside, there is just no way they could do that. Why would Lucas give Klara her paper heart back so gently and decisively? Had he been guilty he would use the opportunity. But most importantly The Hunt is not about guilt or innocence. It's about mob mentality and the horrifying ease with which such witch hunts can occur even in this day and age.
The only reason why I'm not giving the movie more points is because I found some things here unrealistic. As hideous as the allegation was it seemed odd to me not one of Lucas's friends stood by him. It also seemed odd how little the police was involved - the whole thing played as if it was set in Middle Ages with lunatics running around lynching someone, basically only missing the torches.

I also kept wondering why Lucas stayed in this town. Yes, he was very trusting and despite what happened he was able to forgive everyone, but the last scene shows that this whole town is basically the wild and he is like a scared animal, knowing he can be the victim of the hunt at any moment.

Nobody can stand this much fear. And no decent person should ever have to.

    • Happy Friday the 13h, everybody!
    • I finally managed to see The World's End. To my surprise I only laughed once during this whole film, which was shocking because a) I loved the previous two movies b) I was fairly drunk while watching it. W.T.F joke was fantastic but the rest just felt horribly bland and lifeless.
    • News from Hannibal creator is that Mason Verger will be featured in season 2. Now I'm sure that since the series is a prequel he will look normal for now. But he is the guy played by Gary Oldman in Hannibal the movie. Remember that? That remains one of the most horrific  make up jobs I've seen in my life. To this day I can't find the courage to see the film again, he looks so scary. Seeing how we had fucking Colombian neck tie and Glasgow smile in season 1 I'm sure somewhere down the line they will show the charming cutting off his own face with glass moment. Though given how fucking repulsive Verger is, Hannibal is going to be a damn hero for convincing him to do that.
    • As I mentioned in last edition of  my weekly ramblings, Bryan Fuller tweeted this photo of Mads Mikkelsen wearing a floral crown. Tumblr exploded. I nearly did too, but turns out what really almost made me jump around is the tweet on the left posted few days later. I just hope someone splashed Mads' shirt with water. I mean the river is right there. They have him wearing like 15 items of clothing in each scene. He looks nice (and by nice I mean I don't even know my name or where I am when I watch the show cause I'm fucking tripping on how amazing he looks), but it's such a waste.
    • So my friend who is currently conveniently out of the country recommended me A Royal Affair. I watched it. I'm gonna punch him so hard when he comes back and then I'm gonna thank him. I should have known since Von Trier is the producer nothing not horrifying can come out of that. But I did enjoy those sex scenes. Goddamn.

    • Oh, Fassy.

    • And here are Angela Basset, Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates:
    • Tomorrow I'll be posting the annual Saturday TV Special about the upcoming season. Lots of good stuff was revealed in yesterday's EW article.
    • Liar Liar was on TV, so I watched it. Such a funny movie. STOP BREAKING THE LAW, ASSHOLE!!!
    • So they are makingAmerican Psycho sequel series. Apparently it's going to be set in modern times and Bateman will be in his fifties training new psycho as a protege. I'd be quick to dismiss it, but I'm curious who gets cast in that. Hopefully it won't be dead serious too. I love the humour in the book, so dark but so hilarious too - Earlier in the day I had sawed off her left arm, which is what finally killed her, and right now I pick it up, holding it by the bone that protrudes from where her hand used to be (I have no idea where it is now: the freezer? the closet?).
    • Let's take a moment and appreciate Alexander Skarsgard:
    • Jimmy Fallondid a hilarious Breaking Bad parody that featured a lot of cameos from the cast. I think someone should give Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston an award for existing. That pizza throw was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.
    • Here is more photographic proof that absolutely no one is actually working on Game of Thrones set:
    • Joking, joking of course. I think something is going on with Pedro Pascal and Lena Headey, they are always hugging and her instagram is filled with the pictures of them together. Also - how cute is Charles Dance hugging Conleth Hill? Nikolaj gotta be so happy to be mud-free and away from Belfast this season.
    • Sigur Ros follows Coldplay and Snow Patrol - they will guest star in the next season. My bet is they will play at the Purple Wedding, which is filming right now.
    • One of the world's most adorable couples, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, is expecting their first child. CONGRATULATIONS!

There is a house in New Orleans...Are you ready for American Horror Story: Coven?

It's almost that time of the year again - when we have something creepy and messed up to enjoy each Wednesday - Ryan Murphy's wonderfully spooky, brilliant show American Horror Story, which third season, entitled Coven, premieres on October 9th.

Previous two seasons, Murder House and Asylum were met with positive reactions and the latter with incredible acclaim - it is nominated in 17 categories at this year's Emmy Awards. As entertaining as the show is, it has it's problems, but with some fantastic stories rooted in New Orleans' history and terrific additions to the cast, Coven has a shot at being the best season yet.

As usual everyone is very secretive about the story but we know some things for sure - we know that Jessica Lange's character is named Fiona and she is a powerful witch. She returns to New Orleans from L.A where she was living a very comfortable life, after a young witch is found killed. Fiona has a daughter, Cordelia (the lovely Sarah Paulson) who runs Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. That's right. It's a school for witches.
Left: Jessica Lange, Emma Roberts, Jaime Brewer, Taissa Farmiga and Gabourey Sidibe / Right: Taissa Farmiga
But good old fashioned witchy magic is not the only kind of witchcraft in Coven - if you haven't guessed it from the poster, it's voodoo. Voodoo witches were in New Orleans first and Fiona's ancestors and other witches fled here during the time of Salem witch trials. This is such a cool idea and I really can't wait to see these two different practitioners clash.

As with the other seasons we have a lot of people returning. Sadly, we won't see James Cromwell, Ian McShane or Zachary Quinto but I'm overjoyed the beautiful Alexandra Breckenridge (the sexy maid from season 1) and wonderful Taissa Farmiga are returning. No details were reveled about Breckenridge's character but Farmiga is playing Zoe, one of the girls in school who is a shy and sweet girl. The problem is that if she has sex with someone, that person dies. Whether it's a curse or Teeth kind of a deal is still not known.
On the set - Evan Peters and Emma Roberts, Emma Roberts, Taissa Farmiga and Jaime Bewer, Frances Conroy
As for the others - Jaime Bewer who played Adelaide in season 1 returns as Nan, who has the power to predict the future. This season newcomers - Gabourey Sidibe and Emma Roberts also play the girls in the school. Sidibe is Queenie, described as "human voodoo doll" and Roberts is Madison, rebellious star of the school. Evan Peters plays a guy who belongs to fraternity that is the coven's enemy. Just like in season 1 his character's romantic interest will be Taissa's character.

Newcomer to the series, Patti Lupone, plays someone who is against the witches, one of the forces that threaten the coven. Danny Huston will star as Fiona's boyfriend. Lily Rabe and Frances Conroy are returning this season but their roles are undisclosed. Dennis O'Hare is going to play the creepy custodian of the school.
Sarah Paulson, Jaime Bewer, Dennis O'Hare
One puzzling and honestly misguided addition is Emma Roberts. Ryan Murphy really doesn't have much control over his love for his actors and in the effect the show spins out of control at times. Nothing gets done without Jessica Lange's approval. I believe in appreciating the actors, but she is his actress and he is her boss - it's his show and Lange probably has more control over the series than he does.

My point is that Murphy adores Evan Peters just as much as Lange and Roberts is his (apparently abusive) girlfriend in real life. So here she is. On the show. Let's just hope her character dies soon. She is a terrible, terrible actress. The fact her name is on the poster and Frances Conroy's is not borders on slander.
Angela Bassett / Jaime Bewer, Gabourey Sidibe, Emma Roberts, Taissa Farmiga
But let's just forget about Robers and talk about the most exciting thing - as in the past, we will see characters that actually existed. In season 1 we had Black Dahlia, in season 2 we had Anne Frank, but they were only the guest stars. Here we have two famous women that will hopefully be featured in this entire season.

First one is Marie Leveau, a powerful Voodoo practitioner who lived in New Orleans in nineteenth century. Leveau is beloved by the people to this day and she is considered a saint. Her tomb continues to attract visitors who draw three "x"s (XXX) on its side, in the hopes that Laveau's spirit will grant them a wish - that was addressed in show's marketing already in this teaser. Leveau will be played by Angela Bassett.
First still of Kathy Bates as Madame LaLaurie
But the most exciting addition to the cast and quite fittingly most interesting character is Kathy Bates who will play Delphine LaLaurie. There are not many female serial killers in history, but even if they were, LaLaurie would still be one of the most famous ones among them. Madame LaLaurie was a Louisiana-born socialite and serial killer known for her involvement in the torture and murder of black slaves.

She was wealthy and charming and lived in beautiful house with her husband and two daughters (hopefully Lily Rabe will play one of them). What no one in her social circles knew, was that she had a special room where she was doing unspeakable things to her slaves. Think female Calvin Candie, except 100 times worse and under every one's noses in big town.

One day a fire started and forced the police and the people who came to help to break down the doors to the slave quarters. There they found several of LaLaurie's slaves, chained and wounded, who apparently have been being tortured for months.

      LaLaurie mansion
After some time the stories about what was going on started to evolve. In the book Ghost Stories of Old New Orleans (1946) the author wrote about LaLaurie that she had "sadistic appetite [that] seemed never appeased until she had inflicted on one or more of her black servitors some hideous form of torture" and claimed that those who responded to the 1834 fire had found "male slaves, stark naked, chained to the wall, their eyes gouged out, their fingernails pulled off by the roots; others had their joints skinned and festering, great holes in their buttocks where the flesh had been sliced away, their ears hanging by shreds, their lips sewn together ... Intestines were pulled out and knotted around naked waists. There were holes in skulls, where a rough stick had been inserted to stir the brains".

Stories such as that of "human crab" are also very famous - it is claimed LaLaurie had the slave's joints broken and reset so that he would look grotesque and look like a crab when he moved. Another victim had the skin peeled off in circular way and looked like caterpillar. Some claim LaLaurie might have tortured and killed over 100 people.

Those are all speculations since no one knows for sure what really happened. It's a fact that Madame LaLaurie did torture and kill her slaves, but given Ryan Murphy's penchant for all things shocking (remember poor Chloe Sevigny last season?) I'm sure he will use some of the examples found in books written over a century after all of this happened.
Another interesting thing here is the Elizabeth Bathory connection. It is amazing to me how some things as small as who got slapped and for what are so well documented when it comes to things that happened so long ago. I read a book about Bathory once - her servant was brushing her hair and accidentally caused her pain. Bathory slapped the girl so hard the girl's blood landed on her face, hence beginning her obsession with blood. While researching LaLaurie I read that she also slapped her slave when she brushed her hair. What on earth am I talking about? According to EW's article LaLaurie uses slaves' blood as wrinkle cream. Murphy apparently spotted the connection too.

This show has brilliant marketing - in addition to creepy and beautiful posters short teasers are released and they have clues to the actual storyline. The mask that Kathy Bates is holding in the gif above suggest that they will get LaLaurie involved with witchcraft in the show. Satanism, to be exact.
      on the set
Another thing that promo suggested is that someone is coming back from the dead - the show will yet again be set in different periods of time - 1830's, 1970's and present day. I wouldn't be surprised if either Leveau or LaLaurie or both of them came back in one of the later storylines.

The costumes already look astonishing and so are some of the choices made by Murphy already - especially having haunting cover version of "House of the Rising Sun" played in most of the teasers. I also love the fact they actually shot some stuff in real LaLaurie mansion. Here's a fun fact - it was briefly owned by Nicolas Cage.

One more thing - each season has a creepy, scary monster. Infantata in season 1, Bloody Face in season 2, what about season 3? According to EW the monster is going to be an iconic creature. There seem to be two possibilities - Honey Island Swamp monster or Rougarou.

Either way I'm sure it will be as unique and fun as the rest of the series.

      Mud

Let me just begin by saying Mud has the most heart I've seen in any movie this year. It's incredible that a story that is mostly based on characters talking and interacting, a story that unfolds so slowly and patiently on the screen, can be so gripping and affecting. But this is what Jeff Nichols does. His last film, Take Shelter, was also a slow-paced, very character driven tale. And while both films have many elements in common and I give a slight edge to Take Shelter, Mud is still among the best movies I've seen this year.

14 year-old Ellis (Tye Sheridan) lives on a makeshift houseboat on the banks of a river in Arkansas with his parents, Mary Lee (Sarah Paulson) and Senior (Ray McKinnon). He sneaks out to meet his best friend, Neckbone (Jacob Lofland). Neckbone, also 14, lives with his uncle, Galen (Michael Shannon), who makes a hardscrabble living diving for oysters. The two boys set out to an island on the Mississippi River, where Neckbone has discovered an unusual boat, suspended high in the trees.
They climb the tree and into the boat only to find fresh bread and fresh footprints. Realizing that they are not the only ones who have discovered the treehouse boat, they decide to leave. When they reach the shore, they find the same footprint in their boat. And that's when they meet Mud (Matthew McConaughey).

Now this could be a point where a lot of different stories begin, depending on who Mud is. But soon it turns out that Mud is essentially a sap. A sap with a very bad temper and obsessive love for a beauty named Juniper (Reese Witherspoon). Juniper was badly beaten by her lover, which lead to her losing a child and Mud killed that guy in revenge. Now bounty hunters are looking for him and he is hiding, hoping to soon reunite with Juniper and escape with her.
The more pragmatic Neckbone is not impressed with Mud. But Ellis? Ellis' attitude toward Mud is a different story. Ellis is a romantic who believes that if you love someone, everything will always be perfect. He is such a romantic in fact, that not even his parents' collapsing marriage can make him feel differently about love. So when he hears Mud's story, Mud immediately becomes a hero and a role model in young boy's eyes and Ellis is prepared to do everything to help him.

What makes the movie so great to watch are the characters and the bonds that keep them together. Ellis is not your typical innocent boy protagonist. He has actual personality and that to me was new. Whenever I see a movie and a young kid is a main hero he is always cute and innocent. Ellis is those things too, but you can also see what kind of a man he is going to be in the future.
He is basically a young version of Mud. He has a quick temper and when he sees a girl being disrespected he immediately punches the bully and rescues her. Even when Juniper is being threatened by a large, armed man, Ellis comes to her rescue despite not standing a chance in a fight. As admirable as him protecting the women is, temper like that will get you in trouble as Mud's story shows.

The side plot of the story includes Ellis pursuit after a girl called May Pearl. May Pearl is clearly an immature twit that should do some soul searching if she wants to ever has a little thing called personality but Ellis is still taken with her. His relationship with her is probably a lot like how Mud's relationship with Juniper started.
And that's another thing that makes the movie so brilliant - we have two characters, different ages, different circumstances, different girls that stole their heart. But in spite of all those differences they are also on the similar road, yet in the end they choose different paths. Ellis eventually finds out that love is not perfect but, as he did so in young age, he still has desire to look for it in the end.

Mud on the other hand is a more complex case. He spent more than 20 years lusting after a girl who used him and only cared about him when there was no one else more interesting. Mud kept going back, because probably, much like Ellis, he kept convincing himself that this is what love is and that love is eternal. The final shot of the movie gave me hope that Mud will let go and that his new love will be freedom. And freedom doesn't ask for anything back.
I was very impressed by the way the film showed us all those characters. With the exception of immature May Pearl nobody was really a bad person here and May Pearl's stupidity and cruelty can be blamed on her age. The guys who are looking for Mud want justice for someone who was close to them and died and Juniper is so used to having Mud around to protect her, she doesn't know how to let go nor she can just escape with him to live in some Utopian dream.

You really cannot blame this girl for using Mud. Everyone wants to be loved and protected and because Juniper was so used to Mud running to help her, she has tears in her eyes once she realizes it's over and she is now on her own. But I also saw a bit of happiness there - joy that Mud finally grew up and joy in the face of the unknown road that lies ahead before her.
Mud is a good guy and because his love for Juniper wasn't reciprocated, he was the one giving all the love, getting all the pain and not receiving the true love himself - the kind of love that makes you put someone's happiness first, over your own. Juniper was fond of him but she didn' give him that and she didn't give him happiness he was willing to give her. But can we really blame her? Love is not something you can control. And that is what makes it so special. We can't control when we are being born and we can't control who we love. Life and love are so amazing precisely because of that.

I read a strange criticism about the movie - that actresses don't have much to do here and the film should have had stronger female characters. I completely disagree. The story is told from male perspective but the lives of men in this movie completely revolve around those beautiful, strange female creatures. The men we see in the movie suffer for them, suffer because of them and they continue to do so because they want to be with them. Juniper is a weak woman who was lucky enough Mud fell for her, but she is shown as a good natured albeit lost person. Ellis's mother on the other hand is a strong female character who is brave enough to stand up for herself and admit that she wants her life to change.
Mud also shows a very close group that lives near the river - everyone knows everyone in the small town and it's a very sheltered community. Trust is the most important thing there. I liked how instead of portraying those simple people like some sort of crazed red necks (I'm looking at you Beasts of the Southern Wild) Mud showed them in such a positive light.

Yes, they are simple folks but they are good people and that is what matters. They care about raising their kids right, they care about their friends, they care about love and family. And when one of them is in trouble, they stand together.
I was very impressed with the cast of this one - everyone did an amazing job, even if their parts were small. It was so nice to see Sarah Paulson who is so excellent playing strong women with both of their feet firmly on the ground. And it was a real treat seeing Michael Shannon play a normal person, a real sweet guy too.

Sam Shephard and Matthew McConaughey are both stand outs but they have the show stolen from them by young Tye Sheridan who did an amazing job as Ellis. There is only a handful of actors who are this young yet they have this radiating maturity about them - it's like they are old souls and they seem to understand much more than they should at their age.
The film is beautifully shot and while watching it I truly felt as if I was right there, surrounded by nature, trees, sand, with the boys in the bar observing Juniper or in your typical motel, staring into the space. Everything is shot so beautifully, in such a detailed way it really makes you feel as if you were inside the world shown in the film. But the most praise belongs to composer David Wingo for yet again adding an overwhelming amount of beauty and rhythm to Nichols's picture with his outstanding soundtrack.

Mud is a beautiful story centered around the idea of love. Its beautiful message, hidden in the film's ending, that the true love can be found in freedom and friendship is as truthful, charming and poignant as pretty much the whole movie. Go see it, it will warm your heart.

    •  Let's just talk about Kidman getting hit in the ass by paparazzo on a bike. This is hilarious. I was hit by a bike once so I know it hurts, but honestly....the way she went down. This video is just priceless.
    • They called an ambulance for her. She was all right! Not a scratch on her. I'm sure it was a minute or 2 before it arrived. If one of the bystanders had a stroke or a heart attack they would have made him wait 20 minutes.
    • And also - what kind of a fucking moron rides his bike this fast on a sidewalk?
    • So Emmys are this weekend. I couldn't give less of a shit. They have forever lost any credibility by omitting Michelle and Nikolaj. Fuck you Emmys. Fuck you. Also the lack of love for Hannibal = fuck you even more. I'll still watch the ceremony because usually something funny happens, but honestly if they just chose winners and nominees by lottery it would have just as much credibility.
    • That said I am rooting for Aaron Paul because he is a great actor and a wonderful human being.
    • The same cannot be said about Dean Norris who is continuously disrespectful to the show's fans and his limited thinking abilities prevent him from recognizing not everyone *has to* feel about the show and Walt the way he does. He is a good actor but honestly the more he talks the more I hope his career tanks.
    • My psycho dreams continue. This week I had a dream Benedict Cumberbatch walked into my room and woke me up by kissing my hand. I swear to God doing those bar exam tests for hours before going to bed is making me unstable in new and exciting kind of ways.
    • Gillian Anderson  is a good actress but she is just awful on Hannibal. I get that she is supposed to be this really cold chick because of what she has been through but Anderson plays her as if she was a robot. The only way they can justify her existence is if Hannibal finally bangs her on her desk. I'd be super happy with that. So far she is just like a robot who talks in slow motion. Seriously. Listening to her saying her lines actually makes me sleepy. Either way it looks like she is back in season 2 and Bryan Fuller crowned her with flowers as well. I think it would be fun if the flower crown actually made an appearance somewhere in the show.
    •  They even put one on Will in prison scene. These people are adorable. This is how you treat fans. You appreciate them and tweet tons of fun shit for them to enjoy.
    •  Another thing that happened was Mads being interviewed about season 1. Look at his shoelaces. Look at them. This is adorable.
    • On Monday Conan is going to win the ratings war - he is going to have most of Breaking Bad cast in his show in a very special episode,. I'm so happy about this. Conan is such a huge fan so the interviews he does with BB people are always awesome and I love seeing Cranston and Paul together.
    • Check out this beautiful on set pic of Sophie Turner on the set of Game of Thrones. This is what she will look like during Purple Wedding.
    • George R.R. Martin posted on his blog that he thinks Walter White is worse than any of characters on Game of Thrones. First of all, what the hell is this man doing blogging? He has 1500 pages to write. I have 1200 pages of tests to do before next Saturday (Jesus...) but here is the difference - I'm not being paid to. He is. He probably has one room filled with cash and another filled with fans' tears. And really? Worse than people on GoT? What about Ramsay doing this Ivan the Terrible shit where naked chicks run in the woods and he hunts them with dogs? I haven't seen last few episodes of BB but I don't think Walt is doing that. Or what about Cersei and Qyburn and their freaky experiments in dungeons? Does Walt do this? Or is he shooting whores with crossbows? Seriously, what was Martin thinking while making this statement?
    • The only thing that gets me going is chilling with some of my favorites comedies. This week I've seen This is the End for the 3rd time and Pineapple Exprres (Who the fuck is Chachi?! moment is just priceless) again.
    • I honestly think that if they nominated Franco for Oscar for this scene and he won I'd consider it one of my favorite Oscar wins. That scene is that funny. And let's not forget "That's right! I like to fucking READ!"
    • I just love it how through entire scene Seth Rogen looks like he is about to explode from withholding laughter.
    • New teaser for American Horror Story: Coven is completely outrageous and I love it:
    •  There's more. Check out brand new posters for the show:
    • A teaser for Grace of Monaco was released this week. The cinematography looks nice but Nicole Kidman loooks absolutely nothing like Grace Kelly.
    • What is up with The Counselor marketing? The posters continue to be terrible (who the fuck airbrushes Fassbender?!) and the editing in the clips is atrocious. The good thing is that it seems to be lowering people's expectations for the movie and that's always good.
    • Luckily the new stills from the film are much better:
