Breaking Emotions: Fear

MettelRay has started another fun blogathon - this time she is posting a list of emotions and participants can share movie scenes that caused them to have those emotions. Yesterday she posted awkwardness and fear. Instead of giving 3 examples for each, I'll give 5 examples for fear.

Though the above definition doesn't include it, fear is also something that one can define as a jolt of adrenaline and the hair on your back standing up. Another way to call it is a desired emotion one should feel during horror films. While we watch those the danger, pain and harm are all in the movie yet somehow we feel fear too. We share it with people on the screen.

Another way of getting you to feel fear are the infamous jump scares. They are cheap tactic, yes, but they always work on me. That's why you will see so many of those below and hopefully you'll see that jump scares, when they are well executed, should not be looked down upon.

5. Halloween
I've only saw this movie 4 days ago but it's the most fresh feeling of fear I experienced. It's when one of the boys runs into the bad guy and we see him grab the boy, with the accompaniment of freaky music in the background.

4. Interview with the Vampire
This is a classic jump scare but it worked on me-  it's when Lestat begins to turn Louis and suddenly jumps on him with the freaky sound ringing loudly. I did fly across the room on my moving chair during that one.

3. Carrie
I remember seeing Carrie when I was a teenager, late at night on TV. I had the volume pretty high up, no reason not too. And then the serene scene where Sue visits Carrie's grave turned into a nightmare - when Carrie's hand grabbed Sue's arm as scary music started playing. Nowadays a final jump scare is considered a cheap move but hell, did this one work.
2. Alien
I often compare the scene where we see Michael Fassbender's dick in Shame to that moment - it's literally coming right at you. Kidding aside, this is a scene where the captain is looking for alien to kill it. The rest of the crew is monitoring the movement on the monitor and suddenly they see a second dot. Not only is the tension masterful here but the crew's cries and pleas as unforgiving creature is approaching only add to the intensity of the moment.

1. Mulholland Drive
David Lynch is a fascinating guy. He is a great director who has many gifts but one that I always admired the most is that he is the best horror director who doesn't actually make horror films. His films and his TV series Twin Peaks contain some of the craziest, most mind fucking and surrealistically frightening shit I've seen. From Bob silently creeping towards Maddie, through pretty much entire Inland Empire to the creepy pale dude from Lost Highway, Lynch knows how to get inside you head and put nightmares there. And worse yet - the man is a master of building the tension. And example of those abilities is a scene which almost gave me a heart attack. It begins with a man sitting at Winkies diner describing the dream he had to the guy that is sitting with him. He says that in his dream they were talking in that very diner and then they went out back where there was a creature with the scariest face he has ever seen. The other guy convinces him to face his fear and they go out to check the back of the diner. Suddenly that thing on the picture above comes from behind the building and the guy who had a dream falls on the ground, dead from fright.

American Horror Story: Coven - 3x05 Burn, Witch, Burn!

This week in American Horror Story we got to see witch burning, a good old fashioned chainsaw to zombie's head action and another episode of Spalding's little corpse/starlet slapstick adventure. It was, just as it sounds, really fun.

We begin in 1830's, during Halloween. Madame LaLaurie has one of her parties going on and young gentleman is introduced to her and her three daughters. LaLaurie, in particularly gruesome mood takes him to her chambers of horrors. There she asks him to put his hands in various bowls and guess what's inside them. It turns out they contain eyeballs and intestines, which we see being ripped out of slaves by LaLaurie herself in quick flashbacks.
Later on her daughters talk about how much better it would be if their sadistic mother was dead. LaLaurie overhears that and locks her daughters to endure some torture in her chambers, among her slaves. Back in present day, her daughters, now zombies raised by Marie Laveau are just outside the school.

Neighbor boy Luke thinks it's a prank and goes outside. Smart move, there. Nan runs after him and after Luke takes axe to the back, they both manage to hide in the car. Meanwhile Zoe distracts the zombies and finds a chainsaw after which we get sweet little homage to Army of Darkness with Zoe slaughtering the zombies with chainsaw. Thank God, finally she is not useless.
Before she gets to kill the last zombie the chainsaw dies and Zoe is on her own. Zoe falls, suddenly raises her hand and something happens - the last zombie falls on the ground, dead and Marie Laveau levitation is broken. When her friend asks her what happened Laveau responds that whatever that was there is a real power in the witch house now. Gee, Ryan Murphy. I wonder who the new Supreme is?

See how well Zoe does without Kyle? Oh, yeah, Kyle. He wasn't in this episode. Fuck knows where he is.
Meanwhile in the bar, Fiona hears Cordelia's screams. We get to see Cordelia's acid burnt face. Fiona is mortified. Then she is waiting in hospital. She runs out of pills and wanders the hallways in some sort of nightmare hallucination. She goes into a room with a young woman and her stillborn baby. After a sweet moment of Fiona telling the woman to hold her daughter, Fiona revives the baby.

Cordelia is blinded by the attack. She also has scars on her face. Hank arrives and him and Fiona have a short chat in which it's evident they both hate each other and Fiona doesn't think Hank is good enough for Cordelia. She is spot on when it comes to that. When Fiona leaves, Hank grabs Cordelia's hand and her new gift is awaken - shes sees Hank's actions in her mind and now knows he cheated on her.
This whole episode appeared to be revolving around motherhood, more precisely mistakes mothers made when it comes to their daughters. Back in the school, LaLaurie finally gives in and let's her daughter in - not surprisingly pretty soon she attacks her.

Then the zombie girl attacks freaked out Spalding and starts going after Queenie, who tries using her Voodoo doll power to protect herself. Unfortunately, none of it seems to work, but finally it's LaLaurie who manages to kill the zombie. Queenie holds crying LaLaurie, beginning perhaps the unlikeliest friendship in this season.
The next day Fiona expresses her gratitude towards Zoe for saving the girls. Then the council appears. Myrtle is still pissed off and she tells Fiona she needs to step down as a Supreme. And then Fiona brings her plan in motion - she fills the other two in Council in. Turns out Myrtle has been in New Orleans during the time Madison disappeared. Fiona had Spalding follow her.

Inside her room Fiona found the weird collection of images of her, something straight from psycho's text book. Myrtle, who is obviously innocent of killing Madison, tries to explain she was simply observing Fiona. but then Fiona removes Myrtle's glove and we see it has acid burns on it.
Myrtle is sentenced to death by fire. The girls accompany Fiona and then Council's bodyguards have Myrtle tied to a pole, while bitching music plays in the background. Fiona flicks her cigarette and Myrtle burns, to Zoe's horror.

Then it is revealed that Queenie helped Fiona. Fiona had Queenie do her voodoo doll thing and put her hand in acid, just before Fiona revealed Myrtle's hand. Queenie tells Fiona she feels bad about what she did but Fiona manipulates her into staying on her side, going as far as saying Queenie may be the next Supreme.
At the same time, at the creepy casa de Spalding, he opens a chest which contains Madison's body. He attempts to take her out, probably for another tea party, but instead he pulls her hand too much and he rips off her arm. His reaction to that was hilarious - I like that Spalding is a cute weirdo and not a full blow perverted psychopath like Threadson in last season.

The episode ends with Misty Day finding Myrtle's dead, burnt body. Misty does her magic thing and Myrtle opens her eyes. This season should be called when someone dies, call Misty.
We still don't know who threw acid at Cordelia's face. I'm still thinking it's Nan, since she is the only one without too many plots going on for her right now. All she has is Luke subplot and she seems to know and be able to do much more than people think.

With Cordelia's new power - which seems to be being able to look inside the minds of others, we are probably going to get some answers as to why things are so tense between her and Fiona. Surely it can't just be Fiona abandoning her in school. She will probably also get to the bottom of why Hank shot Kaylee.
There is a rumor going around that Hank is a witch hunter. We see Marie hiring a witch hunter in next week's promo - can it be Hank? I find it a bit implausible that immortal Voodoo Queen would need an assistance from anyone, much less a dumbass like Hank. Then again we did just get a scene where a woman was left alone with her stillborn baby in the same room for God knows how long. AHS logic, or lack thereof.

While the episode was not as fun as last week's, it did have many good scenes, though I'm still hoping for more Spalding and Madison. Unfortunately, it looks like Zoe will retrieve Madison's body in next week's episode and it's 'Better call Misty!'again. This is shaping out to be a love story between revived Kyle and revived Madison. Please, don't wedge Farmiga in threesome with corpses.

And we still can expect Myrtle to strike, since she was brought back. My best guess is that Myrtle, Misty and Zoe - after finding out Fiona killed Madison - will bring Fiona down together. But she will have some happiness before that - next week we meet The Axeman - legendary New Orleans killer. He will be played by Danny Huston and he will beLange's love interest this season.

Considering how her love interest in season 1 was immature boy toy and in season 2 there was a platonic thing with a priest, it's great that Lange will finally get to play something completely new on this show. Genuine romantic spark.

  • So couple of rooms in my apartment are being redone. My room is the only usable one, which means my mother brought all of her shit in here. I have 5 bedside lamps in my room right now. And plants. So many plants. It's like a Lynchian nightmare. Gustav is sleeping in my bed. He took over my pillows. I nearly fell out of a bed. And he is A YORKIE.
  • They are doing something to our wooden floors and the smell is fucking awful. I spent 3 hours yesterday wandering around the neighborhood and today I went to see Thor: The Dark World. The female audience in my theater basically wet themselves when Hemsworth was shirtless for no reason at all.
  • The film was really fun. The first one is one of my favorite comic book movies, I like it even more than Avengers. That one wasn't that good but it was funny and entertaining. And I did love all those scenes where Loki was throwing himself on top of Jane to shield her from explosions. That was really nice.
  • Speaking of big movies, the more time passes, the less is known about this new Mad Max film. It seems they are shooting new scenes for it.  Damn, does it mean Charlize Theron has to shave her head all over again?
  • All those celebrity/people with Oscar buzz movies round tables are happening right now. I never watch those, because I have so little time as it is to actually catch the movies in the running, but apparently Clooney did the writers one, because it was recorded before Monuments Men was pushed to next year. Anyways, people are complaining that Clooney took over the conversation and he always does this. Excuse me. That is George Clooney. God's gift to women kind. He has been making us happy for the last 2 decades. If he wants to talk, shut up and listen.
  • Last week on Rambling Friday I spent quite a lot of post talking about Michael Fassbender's penis. I must do this again as Fass is making a new movie and he peed on the set. Why is this news? Because someone took a photo of it. Yes, yes I know. Privacy! Innocence! Humanity! Let's keep things in perspective, people. My room has been hijacked, I'm starting a new job on Tuesday and every day I spend several hours memorizing legal acts. And this is one of the very few things that makes me happy. And come on...it's a fairly open bush to pee in. I'm gonna stop talking now.
  • You can see the photo here via fantastic MyNewPlaidPants blog. God bless us everyone.

  • Ryan Murphy has revealed that Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates are loving being a part of American Horror Story team. He also shared a cute story involving BatesKathy Bates sent the writers a basket of plush toys all in the shapes of disemboweled organs. It doesn’t get better than when an Oscar winner sends you a grab bag of stuffed pancreas to say ‘Thank you and job well done.
  • Hopefully this means they will be back next season.
  • Speaking of AHS, check out those cool Tarot cards by Vulture, inspired by new season. On the side note - I post someone's shit and I get 5,000 notes on tumblr. Damn, the only times I get close to those are when I make Breaking Bad edits.
  • I saw The Counselor this week. It was not good. No, no - let me rephrase that. It was bad. It was real bad. The only reason I gave it 5/10 are - Bolito scene, the score and Brad Pitt. Seriously, Pitt made that shit watchable. Cameron Diazwas so bad. She completely misunderstood her character and she was just embarrassing - she played the part with that smug 'oooh I get to play a cool character!' vibe which completely took me out of her scenes. Honestly, even I would do a better job. Of course I'd fall off the hood and die while attempting to do the split, but still - I'd do a better job.

    12 Years a Slave

Based on true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty, as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist will forever alter his life.

I really wanted to love 12 Years a Slave. I'm a big fan of McQueen's previous two films - Hunger and Shame, the latter getting one of the very rare 10/10 from me. Unfortunately, 12 Years of Slave is far from greatness in almost every aspect and most shockingly - it didn't move me. I observed there are people out there claiming if this film didn't move you, you must be a racist. I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with that profoundly moronic statement.
The problem with 12 Years a Slave is that it's two movies in one. On one hand we have minimalistic approach which is McQueen's trademark - scenes involving just few or two actors, often with very little dialogue. Those are the film's best moments. On the other - we have scenes trying to convey the amount of horrifying injustice happening, epic scale of the issue. These two just don't fit together and they make the film feel disjointed.

There are too many characters here and neither of them gets enough material or screen time. In attempt to portray Solomon's journey, the writer John Ridley gets completely lost. Solomon encounters many different people on his way, yet very rarely they leave any impression on the audience. Worse than that - those scenes often contain simplistic dialogue and lack depth. Almost every single character in this movie deserves much more than was given to them.
McQueen found the right leading man - Ejiofor's talent and grace make his Solomon likable and we root for him to survive and get home. But it is only because of the actor's talent that we feel this way. There are several moments here that match his performance in terms of direction -  mainly the camera focusing on Solomon's face as he got rescued - but there is not enough of them. Because of that sense of detachment from Solomon McQueen and Ridley inadvertently created the film that didn't move me as much as it should have.

Had McQueen stripped the film out of all the extra scenes and secondary characters and focused his movie on Epps's plantation that could have been a masterpiece. He is a good director but he has limitations - he can convey loneliness, grief, determination, but when the scale gets bigger and it involves the whole ensemble, he gets lost. He is no Steven Spielberg and that is most certainly not Schindler's List. In fact I find the very comparison insulting, considering how far and above to this one Spielberg's movie is, in spite of many parallels between the two (as soon as the film hits the DVD you know it's my future Visual Parallels, right?)
All those scenes with Giamatti, Dano (just embarrassingly awful), Dillahunt and Alfre Woodard take our focus away from Solomon. Yes, they are connected to his character and his journey, but because of McQueen focusing so much on them and so little on our protagonist in the scenes they share, our focus is away from the emotional core of this film - which technically is Solomon's desire to get home - for way too long.

In the result 12 Years a Slave is a good movie with many great scenes but far from actual greatness as a whole. The focused moments are powerful - Epps rape of numb Patsey, jealous and drunk Epps chasing Solomon, Solomon getting the beating for refusing to say he is a slave. Those are the moments that are simply unflinching and shocking in their power - McQueen doesn't cut away and makes us pay attention.
Unfortunately, those scenes almost get lost in all those attempts to get us to understand the horror of slavery - the killings of slaves, the punishment of Solomon for fighting back against white man, the cold dealings and presenting slaves to potential buyers as if they were objects. It just feels too cold, too detached - it was just that, but it shouldn't leave the one watching it cold and detached. Solomon isn't as well established as, say, Oscar Schindler. It wasn't enough for me to care simply because he is witnessing all of that.

There are many complaints against the movie calling it slave porn. I thought that the violence at least infused the film with powerful emotions. Yes, the scenes that are violent or show the aftermath of senseless cruelty were, unfortunately, the only ones to elicit a response from me. I wouldn't say McQueen used them aware of the fact that those will make his film moving, but given how bland many of the other sequences are, for me that was the effect.
It really didn't feel like McQueen's film to me. Hunger was a study of sacrifice and desperation, Shame - of loneliness and addiction. Both were powerful and affecting. 12 Years a Slave didn't feel like the study of anything - it showed us some of the most shameful time in United States' history but it failed to say anything new or particularly meaningful about it. We all know it was terrible. And the film will never fully reflect the horror of actual events.

It could come close, with better script and director suitable for this story. The film lacks both. Its saving grace is the cast and four performances that in spite of the film's shortcomings all have shining moments and stay in your mind after the film is over. But because of the script, while almost everyone is giving their best, they don't have enough to work with. Michael Fassbender is chilling as unpredictable and confused Epps. Fassbender is a link between all three of McQueen's films, but I felt that for the first time the director let him down - his performance deserved much more focus on it.
Fassbender's performance is masterful but I wish he was given more scenes. His Epps is frightening because he is a drunk and you never know when he will unleash his irrational and savage fury on someone. He is also fascinated with one of the slaves - young girl named Patsey. His interest in her brought to mind the feeling Goeth had for his servant in Schindler's List, but neither Fassbender nor Nyong'o or the scenes given to them came close to the horror, sense of longing and pain depicted by Fiennes and Davitz and their sequences together.

I really wish more time was spent on the relationship between Epps and his wife. I also wish more praise was given to Sarah Paulson for her outstanding performance here. She is the only one who doesn't have obviously meaty scenes like Nyong'o, Fassbender or Ejiofor but she is just as good. She creates layered work and she is even more terrifying than Fassbender is - she is cold, but her cruelty hides pain and rejection. If anyone should be getting raves it's her - for truly elevating the material she was given to work with.
Sadly, come Oscar time, it's not Paulson who will be getting the nomination but Lupita Nyong'o. I'm saying sadly because Paulson deserves some praise. However Nyong'o performance is worthy of accolades for sure. She has the most baity moments in the movie - the role requires her to be scream, cry, depict unimaginable pain. She does all those things and yet still she manages to show so much grace, innocence and dignity in her Patsey. She breaks your heart.

It's Nyong'o who is responsible for the film's most heart wrenching moments. The whipping scene involving her being punished is horrible but it wasn't as well edited as I would expected it to be in McQueen's film. But the following scene with Patsey crying as others tend to her wounds is very powerful.
Ejiofor justlike Fassbender isa wonderful actor who delivered great work, but is largely let down by the movie as a whole. I'm sure he will walk out of most ceremonies with Best Actor prize. His talent deserves it, but his performance? No, but it would if only he gave it in a better movie that would value his character more.

He does have some incredible moments here, though, like his argument with a woman missing her kids or the scene where he watches Patsey after she was whipped. His single tear running down his face has more power than loud and obnoxious sequence on the ship in the film's beginning.
Out of the many, many supporting actors only Benedict Cumberbatch is a clear standout as a gentle but ultimately helpless slave owner. His conflicted character was one of the very few memorable ones there. Brad Pitt is doing what he can, but he just feels out of place in the film.

While Hans Zimmer goes overboard with bombastic score in some sequences, his main theme for the film is powerful and memorable and added a lot of emotion to the scenes it was featured in. The cinematography is often beautiful, but the editing is far from the best.

12 Years of Slave is a good movie, but it's the worst among McQueen's films. The director tried to do too much here without adjusting his usual approach which worked so well in his more focused films. It's still worth seeing, mostly for superb acting and several magnificent scenes.

Angelina Jolie is pure perfection as Maleficent in the film's first trailer.

(I know I'm probably the last one to post it, but in my defense I was making the above graphic)

It's finally here. The long awaited first trailer for Disney's Maleficent. People are really excited for this one, especially for one awesome reason - Angelina Jolie. Not only was she absent from the big screen for a while now, but it's pretty damn rare that someone is literally the only right choice for a certain character. And there is no one in the world more perfect for the role of evil witch Maleficent than Jolie.

I like plenty of things in the trailer - the pacing is fantastic and it really builds up the excitement for Maleficent to appear. The music is great, Angelina looks amazing and her laugh in the end of the trailer is fantastic (though so was Charlize's in the end of SWATH teaser...). The scene in which she is conjuring a forest of vines is quite epic - I'm sure they are still working on CGI but it already looks like something that is going to be cool and - I can't believe I'm writing those words - and even cooler in 3D.

The big red flag is the film's first time director Robert Stromber. He was responsible for production design in Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and Oz: The Great and Powerful. I fucking hate this guy's style. The ridiculous flying fairies - here it looks like a mermaid or other cutesy crap like that - the overwhelming blue color, golden saturation on people, the bright fuchsia spots - it all looks so fake, so in you face and so, so tacky. Thank God there appear to be normal shots here - like fantastic dark look of the castle when Maleficent is arriving, no doubt, during Aurora's christening or the vines rising.

But if I had to sit though another movie where blue is so blue it goes from being my favorite color to me wanting to punch the wall and retarded creatures flying towards me in 3D because someone thought it will be adorable I'm knocking the whole point from this. Let's hope they'll tone it down.

The film stars Elle Fanning as Aurora and hopefully Fanning's natural charisma will infuse Aurora with actual...personality. She has gotta be the blandest of Disney princesses. Maleficent has quite the cast -  Juno Temple, Leslie Manville, Imelda Staunton, Miranda Richardson, Peter Capaldi, Sam Riley and Sharlto Copley

Here's the official synopsis: from Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Maleficent opens on May 30th 2014

American Horror Story: Coven - 3x06 The Axeman Cometh

This week's Coven brought in quite the cinematic episode. It was very focused and almost felt like a separate movie, with few scenes connected to the main story line. We open in 1919 where we meet the Axeman (Danny Huston) - New Orleans's equivalent of the Zodiac killer. The Axeman killed 8 people and wrote to the newspaper that he won't kill anyone who has jazz music playing in their house.

At this time the girls in witches school decide to do something about this guy. They lure him in by playing opera music instead of jazz and they all stab him to death. That was a pretty cool sequence and probably the longest cold open the show had so far.
Back in present day Zoe is going through Madison's things, still wondering what happened to her. She accidentally finds Ouija board and some old photographs of girls who attended the school. Zoe gathers Nan and Queenie and tells them it seems the witches numbers are decreasing each year. Zoe thinks they gotta stick together to survive. They all drink absinthe to it.

Then Zoe and the girls use Ouija board to find out what happened to Madison. Instead they contact the Axeman, whose spirit is now trapped in the Academy. Queenie freaks out and stops Zoe from proceeding any further.
Meanwhile Fiona is undergoing chemotherapy. Suddenly she starts hearing people's thoughts - a new gift she didn't have before. I'm not sure what the hell is the point of this - after all the Supreme's powers are supposed to be decreasing. I'm hoping there is point to this and not some random thing Murphy threw at us.

Blinded Cordelia comes home, accompanied by her husband and Fiona. When Hank touches her hand she catches glimpses of him and Kaylee again and she throws him out, to Fiona's delight. When she touches Fiona she sees Myrtle burning. Fiona tells her Myrtle threw the acid at her but Cordelia says there is no way it was her.
Zoe, genius that she is, ignores Queenie's warnings and contacts the Axeman again. He tells her that Madison is in the attic after she promises to release his spirit. Zoe comes over to Spalding's sanctuary of creepy and finds Madison's body in the chest.

The girls interrogate Spalding using Nan's mind reading power. He tells them he killed Madison because he wanted to have sex with her dead body. Zoe doesn't believe him. They burn him a little, he passes out and they leave him there.
Meanwhile Myrtle is buried in the ground in Misty's garden. I'm guessing we are going to see her again in few episodes. Kyle comes over all freaked out and Misty gives him a bath. During that Kyle has an incest flashback of his mother and flips out. He destroys Misty's cassette player and she is heartbroken.

Zoe comes over and takes Kyle and Misty with her back to the Academy. She wants Misty to bring back Madison. Misty is reluctant to do so but she ultimately caves in. Rabe was so fantastic in this scene - she is completely unpredictable. At one point I thought she was going to punch Zoe in the face.
Misty puts some mud on Madison's arm which apparently gets the arm attached back to her body. What the hell is in Louisiana mud? Perhaps Fiona who is obsessed with getting old should just bathe in it. Anyways Zoe and Misty bring Madison's back. Her first words after couching up some blood and a cockroach are that she needs a cigarette.

Misty takes some food from the house with her. Zoe invites her to stay but Misty says there are some bad vibes in this house. No shit. Multiple murders, doll show in the attic, Spalding in his crazy outfits...I'd be out of there too.
The girls gather around Madison and ask her what she remembers. She knows who she is and that's something is off. As for the last thing she remembers she says 'red' (Fiona's dress). Judging from next week's promo Cordelia will find out Fiona killed Madison.

The girls decide to keep Madison being back a secret - can I just say again Fiona and Cordelia are so fucking clueless it's almost unbelievable - they have Minotaurs, dead people, zombies and trapped spirits around and they know nothing. Oh and Hank is a witch hunter. You would think his mother in law, the Supreme, would figure it out.
The way we find out about Hank is when he visits Marie Laveau. Apparently she gave him the task of killing all the Salem witches descendants. We get a flashback of Kaylee visiting the Academy and talking with Cordelia. Apparently Kaylee has a gift of pyrokinesis - when her fiance tells her he can't marry her, she inadvertently sets him on fire.

It turns out Hank uses Cordelia to find those witches and kill them. Marie is not impressed and she orders him to bring her the heads of Fiona, Delia and the girls. Bassett was fabulous in that scene. She had some killer lines too - when Hank asks her if she was the one who thrown the acid at Cordelia she says no and adds do I look like the Taliban to you?
Back at the Academy the Axeman talks with Cordelia - he is pissed off Zoe broke her word and didn't release him. Cordelia screams and the girls want to help her. Zoe uses yet another new power to chose exactly the right book with exactly the right spell to free the Axeman. She does that and he walks freely out of the Academy.

The episode ends with sad Fiona having a drink at the bar. There the Axeman sits next to her and after he calls her a pretty lady Fiona smiles at him.
I really liked this episode even though Kathy Bates wasn't in it. I must say I'm kinda shocked Murphy is not getting more heat for what he is doing this season - giving Madame LaLaurie, a psychopathic killer tons of scenes where she gets to be on the path to redemption and giving Marie Laveau, a person considered to be a saint by many, plot like the one where she tries to kill all the witches. I'm not very comfortable with this, but the actresses are making it work.

Anyways, it's great to see Zoe gaining confidence, though she is still doing stupid things. I'm also wondering what will become of Myrtle, Kyle and Madison - there need to be some consequences to them being brought back by Misty.
The relationship between Fiona and the Axeman is shaping up to be pretty interesting. As for Hank I sincerely hope either Marie or Cordelia will kill him soon because he is dumber than Zoe. Interesting thing I noticed was when Cordelia was touching Nan's face and she didn't have any visions - did Murphy forget Cordelia can do that now or is Nan blocking Cordelia's power?

Murphy announced Stevie Nicks will appear on the show in episode 10 which they are shooting in 2 days. This is very cool, but I still hope they will focus more on the actual story and not the additional attractions. I hope they will make the Supreme mystery reveal shocking and unexpected.

Next week Cordelia starts to see the whole truth and Queenie meets with Marie Laveau.

  • Maleficent poster is so ridiculously awesome. The trailer is very enjoyable too. Angelina is chilling and superhot. I really hope it won't suck. I can't have another movie I'm anticipating disappointing me. The Counselor was a pile of poo and 12 Years a Slave was good but not great. Thank God for Gravity, other than that this year is pretty shitty.
  • James Franco said the scene in the gay bar in Shame is homophobic. What's worse is that I see this opinion being expressed by a lot of people. It's one of the most ridiculous things I've heard in my entire life. Also - just how many gay jokes were there in This is the End and during his roast? I laughed at those but seriously, does Franco think he is the right person to talk about stuff like that when he is laughing his ass off whenever someone jokes about him being gay?
  • Season 4 teaser for Game of Throneswill air with the finale of Boardwalk Empire. There is a real danger I'm gonna crap my pants when this happens.
  • Angela Bassett ruled last episode of AHS. And she was in only one scene!
  • Speaking of AHS, Farmiga, Paulson and Sidibe tweet the cutest stuff.
  • I've been watching early seasons of ER. It's such a good show. Nowadays medical dramas are fucking ridiculous - bunch of stupid doctors screwing anything with pulse. ER was actually interesting. And whenever Clooney holds a child my uterus jumps up and down.
  • Speaking of, Georgehas said some stuff about DiCaprio and Crowe that got people pretty mad at him. He shared some stories that don't really show these two in positive light. Once again - it's Clooney. He should talk all the time. I want to see and hear him talk all the time. He is God. And as for 'he is smug' comments....maybe he is, but if you were him, wouldn't you be?
  • In fact if you want to call anyone an asshole - look no further and read what Terrence Howardsaid.
  • Chris Hemsworth was on Conan few days back. Conan asked him about the height difference between him and Natalie Portman and the kissing scenes:
  • This whole ramp story makes me so sad - how awful for her! But at least Natalie got a kiss out of it And Natalie is 5'3'', I'm 5'1''!
  • Gustav has been sleeping in my room for several days and obviously he got on my pillow. He even got under covers! Also my mother found his Santa hat. This is madness. He tried to run outside this week - my mom left the door opened and he run downstairs. Thank God there are another door there. She caught him but she spanked him too. He was so mad he didn't bring his toys to her room for 3 days. That was really serious you guys. My theory is that he was trying to get laid. There is this fancy lady Yorkie who wears dresses in our building. Her name is Cindy. I'm seriously like Dowager Countess looking for the best match for him
  • So this happened:
  • And since this happened:
  • That happened too:
  • This is better than Fassbender's penis in the open bush.
  • This is actually not the only thing Hiddleston was famously phooshopped on lately. One of the cinemas in Asia used fan poster for Thor in actual theatre.
  • And next to that we have cover of pirated J. Edgar DVD.
  • I caught up with South Park, Parks and Recreation, The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family. All of those are going downhill fast. In fact only Big Bang made me laugh.

    Breaking Emotions: Tears + Surprise

    $

This week MettelRay shared another two emotions - tears and surprise. This time I'm gonna do both.

I cry during movies all the time. Like, seriously, all the time. Torturing Clooney in Syriana? Sati cries. Tom Hanks kisses Meg Ryan? Sati cries. Random dog looks scared? Sati cries. Idris Elba is not shirtless? Yeah, you get where I'm going with this.

As for surprise, this is not something I experience often when I watch films, but when I'm surprised, I'm surprised big time. Several times I did not see the reveal coming. This is such an awesome sensation. Like someone pulling the rug out of you with cinematic awesomeness and super clever script.

    Tears:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2.
It's rare when I give out my acting wins to people who have short screentime but Rickman makes my win 2 years back and with ease with just this scene. In it, we see the flashback to the moment Snape found his beloved Lily Potter dead. He embraces her when literally the most gorgeous track from all Harry Potter movies - Dumbledore's Farewell - plays in the background. I was a mess.

    Atonement
This could easily be on both lists as watching the final minutes of that movie was like getting slapped across the face (the twist) and getting punched in the heart (seriously this is some sadistic shit). I always call this ending the most cruel ending in the history of cinema - it's cruel not only for the characters but even more so for the audience, who already got used to the idea that Robbie and Cecilia are finally together. No, they are not. They died. They never met again. It was only Briony's book. Life sucks, you get to bang McAvoy only once in the library, and then you die.

    Brokeback Mountain

The shirt scene. I cannot even talk about it.

    Surprise

    Swimming Pool
This is a great and underrated film in which a writer stays at the summer home of her editor. There she meets his young, spirited daughter. Thanks to her the writer is able to explore some new sensations and ideas. In the end of the film we found out the girl was never there and she existed in writer's imagination as something that would help her create another book.

    Unbreakable
    M. Night Shyamalan is kinda a joke nowadays, but back in the 90's he made good movies. I thought Unbreakable was even more moving and better made than 6th Sense. As for the big twist in 6th Sense I was already spoiled before seeing it. Thank God for Unbreakable's low profile - no one spoiled it for me and the revelation that Samuel L. Jackson's character orchestrated the mass accidents just to find his opposite, a hero to his villain, was incredibly shocking.

    Fight Club

Tyler Durden: Why would anyone possibly confuse you with me?
    Narrator: Uh... I... I don't know.
    Tyler Durden: You got it.
    Narrator: No.
    Tyler Durden: Say it.
    Narrator: Because...
    Tyler Durden: Say it.
Narrator: Because we're the same person.
    Tyler Durden: That's right.

    Breaking Emotions: Smiles + Thrills

This week MettelRay gave us Smiles and Thrills to work with. I'm gonna give three examples for each of those. I'm going to share actual scenes too.

A summary? Pussy Palace, undies and George Clooney. My God, that sounds erotic.

    Smiles:
    Snatch
I thought you said he was a getaway driver. What the fuck can he get away from, eh?
Snatch is my favorite comedy of all time. It has several laugh out loud moments for me, but Tyrone getting out of the car is by far the best one.

    American Pie 2
    Glue
Yes, American Pie movies are crass and often disgusting. Yes, I almost fell off my chair from laughing so hard during this scene.

    The Big Lebowski
    Walter's plan

When that scene happened I actually had to pause the movie. To laugh for few minutes.

    Thrills:

    The Dark Knight Rises
    Rise

I was holding my breath so much during this scene. Hans Zimmer's Why do we fall? was used perfectly here.

    Gravity
    Debris

Pretty much the entirety of Gravity could be featured here - the film is insanely intense and thrilling and one of the best theatrical experiences I've ever had. One of the highlights is the climax to opening scene in which the debris is approaching the characters. Fantastic, rising Debris by Steven Price only adds to the intensity of the moment.

    Michael Clayton
I'm not the guy that you kill.

I almost suffocated due to intensity n the cinema during this one. George Clooney carries this building frustration throughout the film and he finally explodes here and just destroys Tilda Swinton, the villain of the movie. You really can't tell what the hell is going to happen as his anger is so powerful you have a feeling Swinton's character may evaporate due to the sheer force of it.

    Mads Mikkelsen Appreciation

    Mads Mikkelsen
November 22, 1965 (Østerbro, Copenhagen, Denmark)

I take my work enormously seriously. When I do something it has to feel right. Everything has to be right. I’m not ambitious about my career, but I am ambitious with each job. I can be fairly annoying to work with. No compromises. Let’s put it this way: compromises are from hell

Happy day today, 48th birthday of incredibly talented and gorgeous Mads Mikkelsen. He is a fantastic actor, though most people still only recognize him from his roles as villain in Casino Royle and his work in TV series Hannibal. In truth Mikkelsen can play any character - a romantic hero in A Royal Affair, prosecuted teacher in small village in The Hunt, silent warrior in Valhalla Rising and kooky priest in Adam's Apples.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for him to score nominations this Oscar season for his stellar wok in The Hunt, which still remains my choice for best performance by an actor in a leading role this year. He probably won't get in, as it's not as much about the quality of performance but the impact of Oscar campaign that matters, but his work in the movie was simply superb.

Mikkelsen infuses his performances with intense charisma and so much depth. He can be on screen for only several moments and you won't be able to forget him. Hopefully he will get to play many high profile roles which will show wide audience his incredible range.

    5 favorite films:

  • People magazine chose Adam Levine as the Sexiest Man Alive. When Aliens invade I'm not gonna fight them. We, us a race, deserve punishment.
  • Lana del Rey's short film Tropico is finally getting released - December 5th is the big day and the teaser for the film looks seriously awesome. Also Lana needs to get back to that studio and record some new stuff - I've been annoying my neighbors with Paradise Edition (and GoT soundtracks) for months now.
  • I don't know what is going on in Doctor Who fandom today (UPDATE - apparently it's 50th anniversary) but it's entertaining to watch unravel on tumblr. For us, back in niche Hannibal fandom, Mads Mikkelsen calling himself  'daddy' in the interview is a big deal that gets tumblrsplosion.
  • I'm still rewatching ER. I think Dr Romano, who is the most entertaining character in the show right now (middle of season 5 is when they took away my George), definitely had influence on many of those cynical and heartless bastards in TV shows that we so often see nowadays. His lines are killer! I love them so much I did something I almost never do (because it's a tedious process) - made gifs with text on them.
  • I didn't see any movies this week. I was going to see Charlie Countryman but something came up and here we are, 7 days later. I'm gonna try to see this and Ain't them Bodies Saints this weekend.
  • Is 2013 a year to rip off Black Swan? First Moretz with all the hissing in Carrie and now this:
  • Elegant way to put it is paying homage. Well, stop paying homages to my favorite movie - you're not good enough.
  • I'm gonna give The Hunger Games another shot, though - I decided to rewatch the first movie, but I'm probably not going to finish it. It's so damn boring and I'm shocked at all the praise it got. That new movie looks a bit better, but I'm still surprised how plain the male lead is. And his character is annoying. When I was watching the first movie I kept rooting for Katniss to kill him within the first hour. Now, had that happened, I'd give it points for originality.
  • Things on American Horror Story are becoming even more crazy. I haven't posted my weekly recap, hell I haven't even started writing one yet. I think I'll just join it with next episode's recap. Anyways here is a spoiler pic for what will happen on the show. Think the ending of Death Becomes Her.
  • I have been informed about an outage that took place. Guillermo del Toro shot scenes with Idris Elba being shirtless in Pacific Rim. AND HE DIDN'T USE THEM. Good God, why is this happening to me? I PAID FOR 3D YOU SON OF A BITCH.
  •  That Tom Hiddleston meme you guys liked so much is evolving.
  • You'll get kick out of this one since the stories in which I suffer are usually best ones. A while ago I made a bet with my friend who said Euron or Victarion Geyjoy won't be in the season 4 of Game of Thrones. I said Euron has to be in it because of what has to happen in the premiere episode. If I lost the bet I was supposed to accompany him to the cinema to see Nymphomaniac. I lost the fucking bet.
  • Yep, yep. HBO fucked me over again. The production on the show already ended and there was no casting news about any of the Greyjoys. I just hope at no point of Nymphomaniac will Von Trier show us Dafoe's dick. I can barely stand looking at this dude's face so really his dick is a bit too much. I know it sounds awful, but honestly ever since Wild at Heart he makes my skin crawl.

Visual Parallels: Take Shelter + The Hunt

    $

    0
Take Shelter and The Hunt don't have much in common at the first glance. But when you start looking closely similarities arise - both stories center around a man, who despite having a family and people who love him, is utterly alone with his problems. In case of Curtis, the hero of Take Shelter, he is suspecting that he is becoming mentally ill. Lucas, the protagonist of The Hunt, on the other hand has been accused of molesting a little girl in his village.

While Curtis's problem is internal and Lucas's external, the directors of these two films chose to reflect their growing issues and sense of loneliness, doom and fear in the nature that surrounds both men. Curtis sees the gathering storm in the sky, only he seems to see, several times in the movie. Lucas sees frightened, lonely animal during the hunt - much like himself, struggling to survive, alone in the wild.

Both men have children and animals in their lives - first one mirroring the confusion (Curtis's daughter is deaf, Lucas's alleged victim is odd and detached from everyone), the second a connection to a being that also cannot voice their thoughts and truths and get people to understand them.

There are two crucial scenes in both films - the explosive moment where the protagonist stands up and wants everyone to hear what he has to say and the moment where someone close to him talks to the lead character and finally manages to help him.

Both films end with the symbolism coming together - with the storm being witnessed by Curtis's family who needs to acknowledge his illness and understand things won't be the same and Lucas almost being killed, like the animal during the hunt, realizing that his life from now on will be spent in fear and uncertainty.

  • Seth Rogen and James Franco won the Internet this week with their hilarious shot-for-shot remake of Kanye West's video Bound. How can people think Rogen is not funny?

  • BTW damn, this guy's "music" sucks.
  • I saw The Hunger Games again. It didn't help. This is such a boring movie and the story is really nothing special. I mean, really? This gets all the praise and good reviews? Really? I also gave Anchorman another shot in that I finally finished that movie. I think it's vastly overrated. There were few funny bits, none thanks to Will Ferrel who is the least funny famous comedy actor on Earth. Also I was appalled when Jack Black kicked the dog off the bridge. What kind of a sick fuck writes something like this? The only dog kills I laughed at where in A Fish Called Wanda and that is a fucking classic.
  • But I did cheer when Baxter returned. Also - I need to get Gustav that pyjamas.
  • Seeing how I found this about the sequel - And what of Baxter in this movie? Does he play a major role? “Pretty big,” adds McKay. “He always ends up being the voice of reason. He’s quietly, maybe, the wisest, most powerful character in the movie. At all times you get this sense that Baxter is three, four steps ahead of everyone, and when the chips really get down, Baxter’s going to be the one to pull it all together.” - I'm gonna have to see that one too. That's right - I watch movies for dogs now.
  • I saw Don Jon this week, it was quite entertaining. Tony Danza and Scarlett Johansson were fantastic, though Julianne Moore was waaaay too old for her character, especially given how the film ended. It was incredibly noticeable throughout the film that it was Levitt's first effort at writing and directing but the film was enjoyable and I laughed a lot during this, so overall I had a good time.
  • I'm really not prudish - but my God, this movie had too many tits in it . They really went overboard with all those porn clips. It's like - yo, Levitt, more story, less tits.
  • I should write the review for this one soon.
  • I still have The Counselor review to post and final entry for MettelRay's blogathon, so this one may have to wait a bit.
  • We don't have Thanksgiving here, but we do St. Andrew's Day, which is so much fun. Unfortunately we also don't have Black Friday and my God I have so much shopping to do.
  • I also have a lot of cooking to do, especially now that I found out this exists. It even has Dornish recipes! These are my favorite.

    Breaking Emotions: Hate + Love

This week MettelRay chose Hate and Love as the final emotions for her blogathon. I decided to approach HATE as the scenes which really get me to HATE things and LOVE as the scenes that I love to watch, that kinda make my love for cinema justified - first one is funny, second one is a visual treat and the third one, well, the third one is perfect.

    Hate:

    The Hunt
    Psychologist scene

    Fuck you psychologist.

    Antichrist
the whole damn movie / opening scene

    Fuck you Lars Von Trier.

    Project Nim
the whole damn movie / all the times people abandoned Nim

    Fuck you human race.

    Love:
    In the Loop
whole movie / Malcolm's definition of the 'fact'
    This. Forever this.

    Out of Sight
Tub scene This is one nice scene.

    Black Swan
    Black Swan coda
I cannot quite believe it, but Natalie Portman's heart stopping Black Swan coda is not on youtube (unless you count the crappy version quality). Yes, it's not Portman dancing, just her face on the professional's dancer's body, but the illusion is complete and it's the film true culminating moment in which Nina finally lets go (or as I often like to suggest the possession is complete). It's just breathtaking.

15 things I cannot wait to see in the future seasons of Game of Thrones

    $

It's been a while since I wrote about Game of Thrones and it feels like I'm dying - no pictures, no teasers, nothing from HBO - so here it goes. There are so many wonderful moments to wait for, not just in upcoming 4th season but in future seasons as well. I normally write only about the upcoming season, but since I spent many hours today reading about Northern Conspiracy (Jesus, I'm such a nerd) I'm gonna list most of my favorite moments I'm looking forward to. I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of great scenes but whatever, hopefully you'll have fun checking this one out.

This includes spoilers so it's only for those of you who either want to be spoiled or read the books.

    Reek by Marc Fishman
    15. Reek at Winterfell (season 4 + onward )
I'm no fan of Theon Geyjoy and I think he should be punished for his actions. But the punishment that comes to him is so horrible, you cringe when you read those chapters. In the books Theon was absent for quite a while until he was revealed as Reek. It worked better there than it did in the show - unless they plan on not showing him much, which seeing how he is a part of season 4 I don't think they are. Why it worked better? Because last we saw Theon, he was fine. And then suddenly he is grey haired, weak, skinny, mutilated prisoner who is missing his fingers and eats rats.
    14. Tyrion and Jorah (season 4 + onward)
After Tyrion needs to flee he ends up on the other side of the World and his path crosses with now banished Jorah. The pairing of these two is great, even though there is quite a lot misery involved.
John Snow is stabbed / Knives in the Dark by Conor Campbell
    13. Tywin's funeral (season 5)
It's going to fabulous. Pissed off Cersei, Tywin's body smelling terribly and Jaime cracking up about the fact Tywin appears to be smiling and looks ridiculous.
    12.  Oberyn poisoned Tywin theory (season 4 + early season 5)
There are many things in the books I didn't get at first - I noticed them only after I read about them on the fan boards. And there are so many hints and winks that Oberyn, who had great knowledge of poisons, did in fact poison Tywin, assuring that no matter what, the one responsible for Elia's death will end up dead.
Oberyn vs Mountain by Conor Campbell
    11. Only Cat (season 4 finale (?))
This is a fantastic scene that will be a great, great moment especially if it's used just before my number 1 on the list. In it, hopeful Lysa Arryn asks Peter if he loves her. He responds that his whole life he only loved one woman. She asks if he means her and he says no. "Only Cat" and he throws Lysa through the Moon Door to her death. Sansa sees the whole thing.
    10. The stabbing of Jon Snow (season 5? season 6?)
In a moment that I cannot wait to see and book 5 cliffhanger Jon Snow is stabbed, Ides of March style. by his own men, who have tears in their eyes and say 'For the watch' as they do it.
    9. Oberyn Martell vs The Mountain (season 4, episode 8?)
This will be the best trial by combat yet. Between Oberyn repeating "You raped her, you killed her, you murdered her children", the actual fight and Tyrion's reaction to the shocking outcome, this will be insane.
    8. Cersei's insanity / Daenerys going mad (theory) (season 4 + onward)
Cersei is going mad, that is evident. With her drinking and paranoia things will keep getting worse and worse and she will reach new levels of cruelty and evil, probably ending up in her trying to use Wildfire in King's Landing much like Aerys did. But there is this theory I'm fond of with Daenerys going insane and becoming the ultimate villain. I always thougth she was touched by Targaryen madness.
Daenerys after flying on Drogon by Robin Chan
    7.  Frey Pies / The North Remembers (season 5 + onward)
I'm really hoping none of this gets cut. And by that I mean - Wyman Manderly.  We did see his son during Red Wedding - there was a guy wearing Manderly insignia, unfortunately they didn't really focus on him. His father, Wyman is incredibly entertaining character. He is super fat and people underestimate him, but they really shouldn't., Wyman is clever, very clever in fact. He pretends to be loyal to Freys and Boltons and in reality he is fiercely loyal to the Starks. For Ramsey Bolton's wedding he brings 3 large pies - it is a popular belief that they were made out of 3 missing Freys. He also says my favorite words in books - "The North Remembers". The northerners remember it all. Ned, Lady Catelyn, Red Wedding, the Stark children - crippled, scared, lost. And the North will have its vengeance.
Cerssei's Walk / Atonement by Marc Simonetti
    6. Red Wedding 2.0 (theory) (season 7?)
This is all speculation now, but things really do look this way - Lannister girl is marrying a Frey at Riverrun. Brotherhood Without the Banners infiltrated Riverrun. Lady Stoneheart is in their command and Jaime Lannister will probably fall in her trap. What if she uses him to slaughter the Wedding party? That would be quite the scene. Especially since there is a massive wolf pack in Riverlands...
    5. Daenerys' flight on Drogon (season 6)
Sure we don't get to see Dany actually fly to Westeros any time soon but we do see her fly on her favorite dragon and that's pretty cool.
    Purple Wedding by Conor Campbell
    4. Cersei's Walk of Shame (season 6)
After Cersei gets into big trouble she is imprisoned. She wants to get out and she is given a choice - freedom, but only after she is being publicly humiliated. Cersei's whole body and beautiful blonde hair are shaved and she is forced to walk among the people of King's Landing naked and covered in shame.
    Lady Stoneheart by Azad Injejikian
    3. Purple Wedding (season 4, episode 2)
This is going to be so satisfying. Cersei's cries and Joffrey's coughs.
    2. Crossbow and Chain (season 4, finale?)
By far my favorite chapter in the book. Surprising, shocking, entertaining, tense and beautifully played out. Tyrion will have his vengeance and this will probably be Dinklage's best scene yet.
    1. Lady Stoneheart reveal (season 4, finale)
There are people out there who hate her. Who don't want her on the show. I certainly hope their fucking terrible taste won't substitute the show runners' - and George R.R. Martin's-  judgement. And why would it? I'm so sure that this year finale I'm going to get my wish. In June I was horrified and baffled when Mhysa, season 3 finale didn't end with Berric Dondarion stumbling upon Catelyn Stark's corpse and giving her the kiss of life. That would be such a powerful image - her opening her eyes - and they already had Berric in this season and there was all this talk about the resurrections. We don't actually 'see' the resurrection in the book so I'm guessing the epilogue of the third novel will be the final scene of the season. I hope so. It's the single best twist and reveal of the whole series. One of the Freys is captured by Brotherhood without Banners. He is charged with participating in Red Wedding. He says they have no witnesses. They do. A woman steps up and lowers her hood. It's Catelyn Stark - with pale skin bloated from water she was for 3 days in. With open wound in her neck. With half of her hair gone, whatever left being grey and brittle. With hateful eyes. The Hangwoman. Mother Merciless. She orders the Frey to hang and she won't stop there.

American Horror Story: 3x07 The Dead / 3x08 The Sacred Taking

I'm not gonna write much about previous episode, The Dead, as it was weak and boring, to the point that I'm in no rush to rewatch it. Axeman/Fiona romance is a snoozefest so far and the only big development was Queenie jumping sides and bringing LaLaurie to Laveau. We also got awful and cringeworthy scenes from Madison who is now the most annoying person on the show.

She fucked Kyle. Zoe brings her back and that's how she repays her. Zoe, the second most annoying person on the show, doesn't mind so we have a threesome. I really hope Nan is the Supreme and she kills both of them. Instead of doing something useful one is walking around delivering just awful and stupid monologues and the other acts as if her shit didn't smell.
This week we got much better episode - the things are moving kinda slow and there is still bunch of crap I don't care about (Kyle, Luke, Hank) but slowly, very slowly we are coming to what I hope will be a very exciting and surprising conclusion.

We got Misty finding her way into the Academy, at last. Late at night Myrtle, looking hazed and confused, comes over to Misty's cabin saying some guy with shotgun stepped on her face. Clearly, that's not good. The two flee to see the witches at the Academy.
Misty asks Zoe for help and Cordelia touches her hand - she sees Misty burning and then she sees her healing. She offers her help and the protection of the Coven. Then Misty takes them to see Myrtle. Cordelia is very happy to see her as she didn't believe Myrtle was the one who threw the acid on her face.

Myrtle announces to everyone that Misty is the new Supreme given how strong and unique her powers are. Obviously that's a red herring for the audience. Anyways, the group led by Cordelia plans to trick Fiona into committing suicide. Oh my. What can possibly go wrong when the group consisting of crazies, oversexed idiots, blind woman and Nan plans to trick Fiona?
Meanwhile, Fiona is growing weaker because of cancer. We see her telling Cordelia that she is dying to which Delia tells her to die before Thanksgiving so they wouldn't need to try her stuffing. Fiona is breaking and her only joy is her romance with the Axeman. She is still set on killing the new Supreme, though.

The witches are conducting a ritual called Sacred Taking. We see a cool little flashback to Salem times when the ritual was performed. It gives Coven strength by manifesting the new Supreme clearly and it protects the group. But it requires the old Supreme to take her own life.
The group decides to let Fiona believe Madison is the Supreme and that she resurrected herself and Myrtle. First Madison enters and Fiona is given a choice - burn at stake tomorrow, for killing Madison, or take the pills now and die. Madison leaves and Fiona begins packing, as she wants to run away with the Axeman.

Then Myrtle continues the charade, walking in the room and reminding Fiona she can't run - she has to die and the only thing left to decide is how she is going to go. Fiona starts reminiscing about some guy she was with at Woodstock and then tells Myrtle to look after Cordelia.
She takes the pills and falls asleep. Enter deus ex machina, or ghost out of Crazy Tea Party, Spalding. Even though Spalding is a ghost he can apparently interact with whomever the fuck he wants and even pick up things and spoon feed the medicine to people. Wow, there's nothing like free spirits without any ghost rules when you are in desperate need for plot device.

Spalding is outraged that Fiona allowed herself to get tricked like that. He gives her something to puke out the pills she took and she says that she will avenge him and herself. I'm really not sure if she will, considering the later developments.
While the witches are talking and anticipating Fiona's death, she walks in the living room to Cordelia's horror. Meanwhile, Misty manages to flee to the house next door. Ah, yes, the house next door. Where the crazy Catholic lady and her son Luke, whom Nan is infatuated with, live.

We got some really boring and intentionally disturbing - though I was so bored it didn't work - scenes with these two this week. First crazy mama gives her son detergent enema because he is unclean. Then she locks him in the closet. Nan finds him there.
While the mother is calling the cops on Nan, someone shoots her twice and then shoots Luke. The mom is dead, Luke is then taken to the hospital. The shooter? Hank. Now we know Hank was assigned to kill witches. One thought, plausible one, is that he is simply this dumb and shoots a woman twice and a guy in the head because 1. he confused the houses 2. he has really shitty aim.

More disturbing thought, though, is that Luke and his mom are witches. And knowing Murphy Luke may actually be the Supreme, just to shock the audience, except from the look on the boards today most people expect it as possibility now. The only thing worse than Zoe as Supreme would be Luke as Supreme, so let's hope it's not going to happen.
Anyways after Fiona gets there she tell Misty to bring back the mother. Meanwhile Delia finds a silver bullet outside. The mention of silver bullet makes her and Fiona nervous so I'm guessing this is some serious stuff. Apparently it's an attribute of a witch hunter. The two share a moment and Fiona is impressed with her daughter's abilities. You know, in trying to kill her own mother.

In the least interesting storyline ever Zoe wants Kyle to learn to speak and read so she leaves him with some teaching games or whatever. Then he tells her hr loves her, Madison sees that and cries. Cared no one, ever. In voodoo storyline Queenie ripped some dude's heart because Marie is making a dark potion. Zoe and Madison want to talk to her and Queenie tells them that she is the part of the voodoo group now and that New Orleans isn't big enough for both of them.
Then she feeds LaLaurie, now in the cage at Marie's place. Marie yells at her and tells LaLaurie she will punish her. LaLaurie laughs because she cannot die - Marie cuts off her hand. Then she also cuts off her head and sends it in a box to Fiona. Yep, it's a payback for Minotaur's head being sent to Marie. But 1. Why would Marie deprive herself of the joy to torture Delphine daily 2. Why would she think this is a payback since Fiona doesn't care about Delphine?

Anyways, next episode is called The Head and apparently Queenie will do something with it. I don't even wanna guess what this will be. Next episode is also winter cliffhanger and show is going to be on brief hiatus. We are going to find out who threw the acid on Cordelia's face and we will find out more about Hank.

  • George Clooney has been giving a lot of interviews lately. In one of those he said that he 'hasn't met the love of his life yet'. I'm RIGHT HERE GEORGE!!!
  • Speaking of campaigning for Oscar - apparently there is a threesome scene involving both Leo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill in The Wolf of Wall Street. That's not the best part of this news. The best part is that this is apparently one of the more tame moments in the film. What the fuck is going on in this movie? And more importantly - does Jean Dujardin gets to do any depraved stuff?
  • Once again it's Christmas on the Corner, completed with Reindeer Lana, stockings and Black Swan with rosy cheeks - and by that I mean the new header of the blog. There are also snowmen on the sides and my new avatar is semi-suicidal Wednesday Addams in Santa hat.
  • On Christmasy note, here are very special season greetings from the wonderful Peter Capaldi:

  • It's not quite the time for me to start listening to Christmas music yet (usually classics
+ Enya's and Tori Amos's Christmas albums), but it's the high time to see Love Actually again.
  • The picture on the right is extremely, painfully, accurate.
  • There were two very sad pieces of news last week - first one dealing with Paul Walker dying in a car accident. I really liked Joy Ride and Running Scared. I haven't seen any of The Fast and the Furious movies but it's very sad when someone dies under such sudden circumstances. My mother who has no idea who he was saw his picture during news one day and as usual she had priceless comment - 'Good looking guy! Good looking guys shouldn't die".
  • Another sad news is obviously about Nelson Mandela passing away. People have been posting tributes ever since the news broke but some of the people also started talking about the impact of this on Oscar season. That has met a certain amount of screaming from professionally outraged people who are just looking for stuff to bitch about. They are actually intercutting the news about his death with clips from the movie here, so there you go.
  • Speaking of outraged people, I'm one of them, but my outrage concerns Satellite awards nominations and the lack of nomination for Clooney in Gravity. This is bullshit. Stay tuned for my Making a Case for post on that this weekend.
  • We also had NBR wins. Those were crazy. I can't even make heads or tails about how they chose these guys. And about NYFCC awards - If you are awarding movies and you don't give award to Gravity for cinematography - you are doing it wrong. And that is a fucking fact.
  • Continuing the newly established tradition of featuring a very bad poster - here is the cover for Chinese bootleg of Drive.
  • I've seen three movies this week. First one was Black Death which I caught on TV during St. Andrew's Day so it was kinda perfect. It featured lovely Carice Van Houten who played a badass witch, Sean Bean who obviously died - this time being ripped apart by the horses - and Eddie Redmayne. Can people stop casting him please? He is the worst. And he got to be deranged by the time the movie was over so it was even more uncomfortable to watch. The film was pretty good, though.
  • Another movie I saw was the rewatch of A Fish Called Wanda. So hilarious. Yet again I cried from laughing so hard when that big dog grabbed that Yorkie. Gustav was outraged.
  • And finally, I saw Catching Fire. It was better than the first film but I'm still no fan. Monkey action was disturbing.
  • I also got to see Lana Del Rey's wonderful Tropico. It's enigmatic and gorgeously shot - it's basically 3 music videos that are connected to each other - Body Electric, Gods & Monsters and Bel Air. If you like her videos you should definitely check it out.
  • In American Horror Story news, Lance Reddick, who played Daniels in The Wirewas cast as  voodoo Satan for the final episodes of Coven. This is gonna be great!
  • Speaking of horror stories, we have a winter storm in Europe right now. It's kinda like our version of hurricane, except with snow. It's snowing all the time, it's like in freaking Narnia again. Gustav loves the snow, so I still need to walk him around the neighborhood every evening for 40 minutes because he needs to find a perfect place to poop in. You would think he would have some compassion and not take his sweet time, since I'm freezing. He is not freezing - he has a coat, a red scarf, freaking hat, everything.
  • I'm not the one to go nuts about Benedict Cumberbatch, but many of my readers are so I feel obliged to post this one. Several days ago Benedict was a guest on Kimmel show and he read certain R. Kelly lyrics. I sympathize. If that was Mikkelsen, Elba or Clooney reading those, I'd be fucking dead by now.
  • Let's end with adorably confused Richard Armitage:
  • Eric reviews fantastic The Secret in their Eyes
  • m.brown wrote hilarious and very accurate review for one of the worst movies of the year - Mama
  • Ruth has five new movie relate questions in another edition of Five for Fifth
  • Brittani and Keith review Frances Ha, which I'll watch tonight
  • Anna shares beautiful cinematography of A Single Man
  • Vinnieh reviews my all time favorite, Black Swan
  • Chris reviews Blackfish, which I should see but I won't because my heart couldn't take it

Making the Case for: George Clooney in Gravity

    $

I usually try to stay open minded when it comes to other people's opinions on movies. No, wait. That's not it. I try to, however, remember that everyone is entitled to have different taste than me. Movies are different, people are different. As many people, as many reactions to certain films. That said, occasionally I hear opinions so shockingly wrong I just roll my eyes.

When it comes to Gravity, there are two such opinions. First one - that the movie has no/very little depth. Yes, what a hollow experience. The film showing the strength of human spirit - that's just silly! The film showing the extraordinary capabilities of a human being - that's just insignificant! The film showing that even in vast space a person, something as tiny as human being, can be victorious - who cares? How is that important? A film showing that no matter what we can gather enough perseverance and courage to keep moving on.

How is that not deep? If that's not deep, I don't know what is.
Another ridiculous statement about the movie is that George Clooney is not doing anything in it. That's actually a statement one hears every time Clooney has a new movie out. It has now became acceptable or at least alarmingly common to punish that man for his transcendent charm and likability, something that channels through his work and everything he does.

    That's just wrong.

Let's maybe start with the casting. Even if you are stuck in hopeless Clooney isn't doing anything delusion, you will agree that casting is very important in the movie. I bet you'll also agree Clooney was brilliantly cast here. In fact, I can think of no one else who would fit that role.
And that is precisely because of the charm he exudes that causes so many to whine about him. His charm, warmth and the feeling you know the man because you've seen him in movies for over two decades now, was necessary here. It was necessary because for the film to work and for its key scene to be believable we need to like Matt Kowalski. We need to trust him. We need to believe in everything he tells us and Dr Stone.

The film couldn't be just about Stone. She needed catalyst. And we as the audience, needed one too. She is safer when Matt is in frame - he knows things, he is more skilled, he knows what to do. And when he is gone she is more afraid. And we are too. She is on her own and we are stuck with her. When Stone is alone, she is even more alone because Matt is not there. She can either keep going and not let his sacrifice go to waste, even if she is too weak to keep going or she can give up and let down the last person she connected with.
There is a stunning moment in the scene where Ryan talks about her dead daughter. The scene begins with Matt trying to calm her down and asking her questions. He has his music playing, he keeps cracking jokes. He knows it's her first mission so he is trying to get her to talk so that she wouldn't panic. She reluctantly starts talking.

And when she gets to the part where her daughter died, Matt shuts down his music. He stops smiling. He is closer to the camera and we see the sadness on his face. The kind of helpless sadness when you hear about other person's tragedy and you think how unfair it is that some people have such tragedies happen in their lives. A lot has been written and said about the reflections in this movie - but the audience is reflected in characters. The things we see and hear are reflected on their faces. And in this moment, Matt's melancholic sadness and empathy mirrors the feelings audience has for Dr Stone.
There are actresses that could play Ryan besides Bullock. But is there anyone who could play Matt besides Clooney? No. Is there anyone who could play him better? No. Sometimes the fact there is someone out there just perfect for the part is the achievement on its own. You don't need just screenplay and story for a character to exist. You need the perfect actor for the part to breathe life into writing, to make someone feel like an actual person.

Gravity is unique because of many things, but one of them is the film's refusal to use flashbacks. Sure seeing Ryan find out about her daughter would be heartbreaking. But Cuaron doesn't do that. We don't leave the present for a second during the movie. And because the actors are so convincing, we believe them. Matt has all those stories he keeps telling the base and fellow astronauts. And when he tells them, we believe he has been through that. Clooney makes Matt feel like a real person, with memories, experiences and stories to tell. All of that with just his voice, with a camera spinning around him, only occasionally showing us his face close enough, so we can read what he is feeling.
I'm sure that the Academy will go for performances that are far, far from actor's best work but they are in high profile film (Fassbender in 12 Years a Slave) and most likely they will award Oscar to Jared Leto for Dallas Buyer's Club, seeing how they like transformation so much. But without Clooney, there would be no Matt. Without Matt, Ryan wouldn't go on. And without that, Gravity would be hollow.

And it's the least hollow film you'll see all year.

    The Counselor

Imagine that you are a cook. In fact, you are an excellent cook. You've spent the whole day cooking delicious meals of many different cuisines. By the end of the day you are left with various ingredients. They are all superb individually, but they don't make sense together. You could come up with some new sort of meal and make it delicious, you have a talent for it. But instead you go the easy way - you put them in a shit-stainted shaky bowl, you say it's great and you serve it to your customers.

Cormack McCarthy is like such a cook. He knows how to compose things, he had the right ingredients. But instead of thinking of a whole product first, he decided to throw in some events and characters he probably thought of additionally while writing his previous stories and he decided to sell them as another product. Wrapped in shitty, plot hole filled story which is this movie's script. And that script is the movie's ultimate downfall. Ridley Scott is a skilled director and the cast is filled with talented actors. But when the story is boring and ridiculous, there is only so much one can do.
When I read the script a while ago I was hoping many sequences will be cut, many dialogue heavy scenes will be rewritten. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. While there are changes to the script they are not the right ones - they cut out scenes that worked, shortened the scenes that didn't need to be shortened and left the worst, most self-indulgently pretentious moments in.

The plot of the film is not complicated - it's just so half-assed you think it's complicated. You are watching this and thinking - surely there needs to be more to this, right? No.  In a nutshell a wealthy Counselor (Michael Fassbender, trying his best and even his best isn't good enough) becomes an investor in a drug deal. The drug deal goes wrong. The Counselor gets blamed for it. The shitstorm occurs.
The fact the Counselor even gets involved is one of the many asinine things in this story. His partners are Reiner and Westray - two guys who drive fancy cars, have tons of cash, clubs, chicks, you name it - they have it. Why would they even need a partner? They wouldn't, case closed.

And let's talk about this Counselor. He is a lawyer - which means he finished law school and passed the bar. I'm 3/4 into that journey and I already started thinking of death not as of a terrible thing but as of sweet release. And this guy is behind that awful phase and making money. He is young, good looking and he is banging Penelope Cruz. He has enough money to afford outrageously fancy engagement ring for her. And he wants more. Jesus Christ, just what kind of an idiot is he?
His character is one of the biggest issues - you don't necessarily have to like the protagonist but you should at least find him interesting. Not only is this guy not interesting - he is impossibly stupid. He is getting warnings from people not to get involved in drug business left and right and he still does this. Then - a surprise to no one - things go wrong.

What makes matters worse is that literally everyone - even the imprisoned mother of one of the many, many side characters - is more interesting than this guy. So essentially the guy you are supposed to root for at least a little becomes a plot device designed to get other people to act and talk cool when he is around.
Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt are rightfully being singled out in most reviews as two actors who make this movie watchable. Bardem sports another crazy hairstyle and has fun with his role - his lively and colorful character is interesting from the very first scene. His expression during already infamous sex scene on the hood of the car is one of the very few laugh out loud moments which the film desperately needed. When you're not laughing or feeling tension, in much too few scenes, you are just watching this completely numb.

Pitt on the other hand completely steals the show as Westray - an all around odd but mysterious guy, who is both cool and a little bit disturbed. Him and Bardem seem to be the only ones understanding this script will be good for them and bad for everyone else - since they are the only ones actually looking comfortable with their roles.
Pitt makes his character the only layered one in this whole movie and it is entirely thanks to him. He gives his character a weird trait - maniacal laughter he uses in the most inappropriate moments. His Westray is far gone - both in drug deals and the reality of the world, yet his fun loving nature prevents him from getting away. When he finally does, it's much too late.

I was impressed by Penelope Cruz who pulls off innocent and sweet Laura well. You should know however that she has even less scenes than in the trailer. That's right. Less than 10 minutes of screentime total. And her scenes don't really add much, although out of everyone it's easiest to feel bad for her naive character.
The worst performance in the movie is hands down, Cameron Diaz's Malkina. It takes talent to wreck an interesting character like that to such extent. I was always undecided when it comes to Diaz and her acting talent - she was fairly good in Vanilla Sky, but here in The Counselor as far as I can tell she has buried herself in the mud that will probably get her to do TV series soon because no one will want to hire her in serious films. Her performance is so bad it sinks whatever promise was left in this movie.

Diaz doesn't try to understand her character. She doesn't get her character. She plays the part with the smug expression on her face that instead of saying 'I'm badass Malkina' says 'I'm Cameron Diaz and I get to do outrageous things in the movie". The fact she is miscast is one thing, the fact she doesn't even try to do something interesting with the role is another. The film also has a number of cameos who are as useless as they are forgettable. Natalie Dormer makes an impression as the associate of Malkina - in fact her 2 minutes in this movie have more fire in them than all of the fancy A listers present here. But with that script and that story, there is only so much anyone can do.

There is a lot going on in here that will get people talking - Bolito scene, which was pretty great, sex scene with the car, which was fairly forgettable other thanBardem's expression, the opening scene with Cruz and Fassbemder, which is awful beyond belief. Honestly, maybe old men shouldn't write sex talk? McCormac's writing was so bad here it literally ruined a scene where Fassbender eats his girlfriend out. I didn't think ruining such a scene was even possible.
As much as I like Ridley Scott, I'm very glad this movie flopped. He needs a swift kick in the ass. I'm sick and tired of him releasing a movie and then saying 'oh, by the way, director's cut is gonna be much better'. What the hell. I want to to see a movie, not a freaking preview for Director's Cut. You can't keep releasing something you don't really like and tell people to wait several years so they can spend even more money and see the intended version. Eva Green should really sue Scott for how he butchered her work in theatrical version of Kingdom of Heaven.

The film has several things that worked - the score is excellent and Pitt performance almost makes the movie worth seeing. Unfortunately all in all it's a waste of talent and everyone's time.

The 71st Annual Golden Globe Nominations

    $

Today's Golden Globes nominations were shocking, surprising and above all - they chose people who are hot right now and they really want them to appear on that red carper (Kate Winslet, who I'm told just had a baby, I'm mostly talking about you). There were surprises - Rush nominated for Best Drama, snubs - Oprah Winfrey shockingly absent, sources of joy for many - Greta Gerwig nominated for Frances Ha and potential game changers - Idris Elba nominated for Long Walk to Freedom.

There was a lot of American Hustle love - with all four actors being nominated. I still think only Lawrence will get Oscar nomination, though. The Wolf of Wall Street, Philomena and 12 Years a Slave scored big.

Last year my cute helper was Bonnie from Seven Psychopaths. This year it's Baxter from Anchorman 2.
Leo Dicaprio dancing in Wolf of Wall Street. And probably right now.

    12 Years a Slave
    Best Motion Picture - Drama
    "12 Years A Slave"
    "Captain Phillips"
    "Gravity"
    "Philomena"
    "Rush"

Thoughts: These are quite unexpected - Philomena and Rush are films that are not considered front runners. Rush is definitely not scoring BP nod at the Oscars but who knows about Philomena? I'm hoping Gravity will be the winner here.

    Best Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical
    "American Hustle"
    "Her"
    "Inside Llewyn Davis"
    "Nebraska"
    "The Wolf Of Wall Street"

Thoughts: With American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street being comedies, no wonder the funniest movie of the year - This is the End - didn't get in. This one is going to be interesting - it's seems to be between Wolf and Hustle, but Her may get in and win this one.

    American Hustle
    Best Director
    Alfonso Cuaron - "Gravity"
    Paul Greengrass - "Captain Phillips"
    Steve McQueen - "12 Years A Slave"
    Alexander Payne - "Nebraska"
David O Russell - "American Hustle"

Thoughts:  No big shocks here. Hopefully Cuaron wins it.

    Best Actress - Drama
    Cate Blanchett - "Blue Jasmine"
    Sandra Bullock - "Gravity
    Judi Dench - "Philomena"
Emma Thompson - "Saving Mr Banks"
    Kate Winslet - "Labor Day"

Thoughts: Blue Jasmine is drama now? Boy, they will do anything to get Winslet there. She wasn't in the race for a while now. Blanchett is winning with ease.

    Best Actor - Drama
    Chiwetel Ejiofor - "12 Years A Slave"
Idris Elba - "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom"
    Tom Hanks - "Captain Phillips"
Matthew McConaughey - "Dallas Buyers Club"
Robert Redford - "All Is Lost"

Thoughts:  Hopefully this will boost Elba to Oscars. Probably not, but hey, a girl can dream. It's so nice to see McConaughey nominated. Eijofor is most likely winning here.

    Frances Ha
    Best Actress - Comedy
    Amy Adams - "American Hustle"
    Julie Delpy - "Before Midnight"
    Greta Gerwig - "Frances Ha"
    Julia Louis-Dreyfus - "Enough Said"
Meryl Streep - "August: Osage County"

Thoughts: Greta Gerwig nomination has met a bigger joy on Internet than when Emma Stone got in for Easy A. It's a well earned nomination, even if I didn't love the movie. I'm betting on Adams here. They obviously loved Hustle.

    Best Actor - Comedy/Musical
    Christian Bale - "American Hustle"
    Bruce Dern - "Nebraska"
Leonardo DiCaprio - "The Wolf Of Wall Street"
Oscar Isaac - "Inside Llewyn Davis"
    Joaquin Phoenix - "Her"

Thoughts: Leo gotta love the Globes. At least they are not ignoring him. Who knows maybe he will finally be nominated for Oscar after all these years? Another interesting category, but I'd bet on Phoenix.

    Blue Jasmine
    Best Supporting Actress
    Sally Hawkins - "Blue Jasmine"
    Jennifer Lawrence - "American Hustle"
    Lupita N'yongo - "12 Years A Slave"
Julia Roberts - "August: Osage County"
    June Squibb - "Nebraska"

Thoughts: I haven't even seen the film yet but I'm very happy for Sally Hawkins. Globes are always happy awards for her, unlike the Oscars. Oprah may try to kill her, though. N'yongo is winning here.

    Best Supporting Actor
    Barkhad Abdi - "Captain Phillips"
    Daniel Bruhl - "Rush"
    Bradley Cooper - "American Hustle"
    Michael Fassbender - "12 Years A Slave"
Jared Leto - "Dallas Buyers Club"

Thoughts: Bruhl popping up everywhere is fascinating. It's not the role people were screaming about but damn, it looks like it will silently, patiently make its way to the actual Oscar nominations. Leto is winning. Strongest front runner right after Blanchett.

    Rush
    Best Screenplay
    Spike Jonze - "Her"
    Bob Nelson - "Nebraska"
Jeff Pope & Steve Coogan - "Philomena"
    John Ridley - "12 Years A Slave"
Eric Warren Singer & David O Russell - "American Hustle"

Thoughts: It pisses me off to no end that 12 Years of Slave's screenplay, easily the weakest part of the movie, is going to win everything this Oscar season.

    Best Foreign Film
    "Blue Is The Warmest Color"
    "The Great Beauty"
    "The Hunt"
    "The Past"
    "The Wind Rises"

Thoughts: The Hunt being nominated makes me so happy. I was sure it will easily win, but now Blue is the Warmest Color appears to be a front runner. To be honest given it's the Globes I'm shocked it's the movie's only nomination.

    Blue is the Warmest Color
    Best Animated Feature
    "The Croods"
    "Despicable Me 2"
    "Frozen"

Thoughts: I'm not watching animated films but considering Frozen has been praised as the first Disney classic for the new generation it's pretty safe bet that it will win.

Best Original Score - Motion Picture
Alex Ebert - "All Is Lost
Alex Heffes - "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom"
    Steven Price - "Gravity"
John Williams - "The Book Thief"
    Hans Zimmer - "12 Years A Slave"

Thoughts: Fingers crossed for Gravity. Why is Zimmer getting nominated for  3-4 tracks? Even fucking Only God Forgives had a better score. MUCH better score.

Best Original Song - Motion Picture
"Atlas" - Coldplay - "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire"

Thoughts: I'm seriously laughing my ass off at all those nominations for Brooklyn 99. Andy Samberg was getting so much shit over this show during Franco's roast and look at it now - it's nominated, he's nominated, Franco and the boys have nothing. He's gotta be so happy now. Also - why is the feces called Girls nominated again?
