I love Melissa McCarthy. There are plenty of people who find her crude, annoying and unfunny but I'm not one of those people. I am still baffled that there are those out there who actually hated The Heat, which I think is one of the funniest comedies in recent years. And McCarthy's nomination for her wonderful work in Bridesmaids is one of my all time favorite Oscar nominations. To top these two movies would be tough, but that is exactly what Spy managed to do.

Meet Susan. Susan is a CGI agent but without the glamor of the job - she is eyes the ears of another agent, Bradley Fine (Jude Law). She sits in the basement, navigates him through corridors and frequently saves his life via a headset. Soon Fine is killed by an arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne) who also has a list of all the active agents. So Susan volunteers to go in the field herself, seeing how everyone else was compromised. She will have to face self doubt, the bad guys, Rayna, awful disguises and constantly interrupting agent gone rogue, Rick Ford (Jason Statham).
Spy has all the right elements comedy should have - a likable, relatable heroine, a sharp script and plenty of laughs. McCarthy is the heart of the movie and creates a lovely performance - being convincing both as sweet, kind and shy Susan and then a badass agent. The transition between these two sides of Susan never feels jarring, thanks to well written character and McCarthy's talents.

The script yet again, as with other movies from Paul Feig, gives us a huge dose of girl power in the form of McCarthy kicking so much ass and routinely proving herself to be better than her colleagues at being an agent. There's also Susan's friend who serves as Susan's eyes and ears for most of the movie and the two of them have great chemistry together. They really feel like friends. And there is even a bond developing between Susan and Rayna, which is a lovely touch. For the most part, though their interactions are filled with hilarious banter, the best one occurring when Susan is pretending to be Rayna's bodyguard. McCarthy's quick wit known so well by now and her saucy insults are just on fire here, peaking at Susan downright verbally massacring Rayna's other bodyguard.
Susan is given a series of completely ridiculous disguises given to her because she is not some tall, skinny blonde. She is either a widow, a cat lady or cosmetics saleswoman. Thankfully at some point Susan has enough of those and decides to dress her own way. What Feig does here is poke fun at the way women like McCarthy are seen, but never being insulting or offensive. It's a fine line but the script never makes fun of its clever and attractive heroine.

The film also never makes fun of Susan's size - yeah, she cannot slide on the hood of the car, but who the fuck can? The only times Susan's appearance is getting insulted are to do with the way she is dressed, which are disguises. In fact, refreshingly, it's Rose Byrne's Rayna who is more of an object of ridicule - with her ridiculously high heels and super weak arms.
Spy is really such a breath of fresh air and Feig yet again gave us such a great female-driven script. I'm fairly sure the movie passes Bechdel test within its first 15 minutes. I wrote previously that Susan does her job better than her male colleagues but it's not some sort of "women are superior" statement - Susan does the job better not because she is a woman, but because she is skilled, intelligent and resourceful.

While Jude Law's strength was never comedy, he did well here, being a very good fit for his character. A true find, though is Peter Serafinowicz who nearly steals the movie from everyone as completely inappropriate Italian agent who is assigned to help Susan and while doing so he just cannot stop hitting on her. It's so great seeing a woman like McCarthy as an object of such a desire and because of how cute and in the end harmless Aldo is his advances never come off as gross or creepy.
But the real star of the show is none other than Jason Statham. One of my biggest cinematic wishes was for Statham to do comedy again - he was so wonderful in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and one of my all time favorite films - Snatch. Not that I don't appreciate Jason doing his action thing, because I do, but he really has a wonderful comedic talent. So it's just a pure joy not only seeing him again in a funny material but seeing him do so well with it.

Paul Feig is a fan of Statham's action movies and tailored Statham's character in the film especially for him play. Statham plays the part hilariously and he does it so well in part because of the meta thing - his Rick Ford constantly brags about doing impossible things like jumping off a train on motorcycle or attaching his own arm....with his other arm. But here is the twist - Ford continuously screws up, in spite of meaning well. The hilarity of such moments as Ford dramatically saying that he moves like a shadow followed by him bumping into a waiter and causing him to loudly drop the silverware is amplified because it is Statham whom we never before saw screw up....well, anything really.
There's also very amusing Allison Janney as Susan's tough boss who refuses to cradle her but gives her praise when praise is indeed deserved. It was refreshing seeing a realistic character like that - Janney's character doesn't go out of her way to help Susan out of the kindness of her heart, like things usually go in comedies, but much like Susan she just wants to do a good job. That was really cool, to have a movie that preaches girl power without shoving faux stuff like women supporting each other selflessly because of solidarity. As someone who works with a lot of women let me tell you, it's just not terribly realistic, unless the women helping each other out are close friends.

Then there is Bobby Cannavale who is proving himself to be very versatile, bringing intensity to his dramatic roles and here fully embracing his ridiculous character. Miranda Hart is another person for whom Feig wrote the character specifically and she is so funny, particularly in the scenes where she embraces finally being a real spy out in the field.
There is also a whole bunch of people we also saw in Bridesmaids and The Heat, including McCarthy's real life husband, delivering very funny cameo appearance. Perhaps one of the many reasons why Feig's comedies are so good is that they are made by people who obviously like and respect each other and like working together. There is so much fun in this movie and I'm sure it was also tons of fun behind the scenes.

The film also has insanely catchy assembly of songs and is a bottomless well of awesome lines (-It's a man's coat - Yeah, but I don't see a man, do I?"). Then there is whole bunch of additional stuff - like Statham's ridiculous disguises and Rayna's even more ridiculous hairstyles - that only add to how funny Spy is. And there is a lovely message here - in the end Susan finds courage and confidence not because of what others do and say, but because she finally takes a risk and finds out just how capable she really is.

And hey, she gets such a great celebration in the last scene of the movie. I cannot imagine anything better.

I really don't think we will see funnier, more entertaining comedy this year.

  • What the hell, America?!
  • I'm not, on principal, against remakes. Sometimes they are really good like Vanilla Sky, which is actually in my top 20 favorite films of all time. But the upcoming Secret in their Eyes just looks like a fucking travesty.
  • The original is Argentinian Oscar winner for Best Foreign film a few years back, only 6 years to be exact. It has great writing and acting, really cool lawyer lady character, very powerful story of revenge and awesome twist.
  • The remake appears to have Julia Roberts, looking like shit and begging to be Oscar nominated again, probably even more so than Hugh Jackman was, while yelling and wrecking sinks with hammers in that crap known as Prisoners.
  • That they remade it alone is upsetting, but what the hell was done with the story? The key character of the widower - who is smartly in the background for a lot of the movie - and the partner cop roles have been merged? Into a woman? To give Roberts baity edgy material so she can rough up some guys, drink, yell and smash mirrors?
  • How cheap. How pathetic. How predictable.
  • The fact that they changed the part of a husband to mother just messes up the entire dynamic in the story. Also the bad guy just looks like some typical loon instead of sad, lonely and pathetic killer in the original version. Not that by writing 'sad' I mean you should be feeling for him but my God was that guy a gigantic loser. This one is less than a loser. It's just a cliché. A forgettable one.
  • And who did they cast to play charismatic, fiery, lively district attorney lady? Freaking porcelain botox doll Kidman. Not that Kidman cannot act, because she can. But she is so miscast here.
  • Eijofor is all right but the whole trio is so mismatched. The trailer looks like every single character was taken from another film and digitally pasted onto this one.
  • Also I hear that instead of rich corruption story from the original the backdrop here is 9/11.
  • Oh...my...God.
  • So... Ben Affleck is apparently a gambling, drunken mess? At least that is being cited as the reason for him and his wife splitting up. Maybe he just went method with the whole Batman thing.
  • Penny Dreadful was on fire in the last few episodes. Who knew Billie Piper could act? I certainly didn't. Her big scene in episode 8 was amazing.
  • ...as was that kiss between Ethan and Vanessa in episode 7.
  • So I finally started watching True Detective 2. I managed to see 1,5 episode. Why is Taylor Kitsch there? and why is Adams trying so hard? Am I supposed to be rooting for anyone there? I liked the main duo in season 1 but this is just an assembly of human garbage.
  • Terminator: Genisys is getting owned by Magic Mike XXL in American cinemas. Everyone knew that this new Terminator would suck but man, this is embarrassing. Also seriously what were they thinking casting Emilia Clarke? Not only is she limited actress at best but she looks nothing like Sarah Connor should look like. Also Emilia is really not looking great in that one. You take make up, dresses and the blonde wig...and she is just a plain girl. Ladies we all could look majestic if we had this type of resources.
  • So I started watching Outlander, but the only days I actually have the time to sit back and see anything is the weekends, so it's going as speedy as my viewing of Daredevil. Which is to say it's snail's pace.
  • It's not a bad show! There is this whole celtic vibe, especially in landscapes, music and general way everyone talks I enjoy. Also while no one will ever come close to my lady Cat, in the first three episodes, the main character has more agency (read it and weep!) than every single GoT female character had this entire season.
  • Combined.
  • You know you branch out, you start watching stuff like Penny Dreadful and Outlander with those rich female characters, actually doing stuff, being given screen time and you just have one question - why do David Benioff and Dan Weiss hate women so very much? Because when you compare how women are treated on Penny Dreadful with the pointless abuse, lack of characterization and simplification of Thrones, you must be blind not to see the rampart misogyny that has been sneaking up on us every since Cat died and so did Cersei - via whitewashing - the moment Margaery smirked at her and we felt bad for poor Cersei. Dany is being saved by Tyrion, Ellaria is a psychopath and Sansa gets rape in her big 'empowering' storyline in which all she does is 1. picking a lock 2. telling someone she wants to die 3. gets rescued by Theon.
  • Empowerment.
  • Meanwhile on Penny Dreadful you have Vanessa making hard, conscious choices, standing up to assholes and witches and consoling poor souls. That hasn't happened on GoT since Brienne's storyline in season 3.
  • Steve Jobs trailer! Well, Fassbender is back and looking fine as ever (except for the glasses and turtleneck, unless you are Statham in Spy, don't wear that guys). Winslet is almost recognizable and I'm so psyched that Seth Rogen is there! I hope he gets the Jonah Hill Oscar buzz/praise treatment.
  • I finally got a chance to start watching Conan again - I have so many episodes to see, some of them from a year ago. I watched Nick Offerman's episode from October and Bill Hader's, back when he was promoting Skeleton Twins and they were both so funny. Offerman was talking about his gig called "Full Bush" and started talking about how people should leave their pubic hair alone, in his typical awesome voice and sophisticated language and it was so hysterical. Hader did baby Arnold Schwarzenegger impression which made him crack up which is always the best thing to see.
  • Also I saw Nicole Kidman episode and I thought it was super rude that she kissed Conan but didn't even shake hands with Andy. It reminded me of that time Seth Rogen was on some talk show and Megan Fox was the second guest - he leaned in to give her a kiss and she just turned his face away from him. Yeah I get that women have the right to chose who is kissing them on the cheek but come on, it was a greeting. It just made her look like a bitch. Rogen is adorable, damn it!
  • How was my week? It was shit. It was so bad, I didn't even online shop anything, which is the highest form of being upset. I even took a nap. I once went 50h without sleep and now with this job, at the age of 25, I'm napping. I heard more crap from my boss this week - she couldn't even say she liked one of the 5 things I wrote for her - the phrasing she used was "this is the one I disliked least". She's on vacation now. It's against Wiccan code to wish misfortune on anyone so I shan't.
  • We have the most experienced assistants leaving us this month which makes me and a colleague who worked 3 months longer than me, the assistants with longest experience there. And everyone is expecting us to be as good as the girls who are leaving (who studied longer, passed the bar and worked there 5+ years). I still know nothing. I'd be cool if someone gave me 5 minutes, guided me somehow, told me what I should write about specifically about the case - since all I did for 5 years of colleague was studying theory - and then when I fucked up they would get mad. But handing me a verdict to write when I have no idea what I'm doing and then yelling at me for 5 minutes daily is really not cool. It makes me feel like a moron, even if there is no reason I should because how can you know things like that? To give you the idea - it's as if I studied human biology for 5 years, graduated, went to work and was given a scalpel to cut out someone's appendix.
  • All I can say is - thank God for the one judge (out of 12) who actually thanked me for doing things in advance for him. He even says hello and goodbye. Others just shut the door in front of you when you are carrying legal acts.
  • And Stannis is still dead.
  • But at least Gustav had a good week again. And I got hit on about 5 times this week by guys who go 'oh what a beautiful dog!' and then to me 'what a beautiful lady!' when I walk him. And Gustav is such a whore he is continuously wiggling his tail and playing while I'm getting hit on.

    Dark Places

Gillian Flynn's books are a dream material for movie makers. At least they should be, but for some reason the hype and the fame in Hollywood that accompanied Flynn when Gone Girl was released last year appears to be something  that sparkled too much, very briefly and intensely, and died. She is reportedly doing HBO series with Fincher, but what of her other books? The most cinematic one, called Sharp Objects was rumored to be in the works to become a TV series but there are no news, there isn't even one casting tidbit.  And what about Dark Places?

This film was doomed from the start given that unlike Gone Girl, it was not directed by David Fincher, Instead, French director Gilles Paquet-Brenner helmed the movie. So that's one huge chunk out of hype going out the window. Then the film picked up some attention when the cast members were announced but then it received a kiss of death - which is what I call being acquired by A24.
Honestly, Ex-Machina, this year's very successful indie movie should have had "Successful in spite of being distributed by A24" line plastered all over the posters, cause that right there is this film's biggest accomplishment. I appreciate these people buying movies and releasing them as opposed to never being released, but they are just awful when it comes to marketing. Right now they are sitting on a dynamite of The Witch, a horror which premiered at Sundance to glowing reviews. They should release a creepy trailer. They should announce it is getting released on Halloween. There's nothing. No promo, no poster, no release date in sight until I presume it goes the same way as Dark Places - hits the web and then cinemas 2 months later which makes absolutely no fucking business sense whatsoever.

Dark Places is not a bad movie, but the source material, even if it is Flynn's worst book - the shreds of narrative coming together is stunning to read but the idiotic twist in the end brings the whole story down - deserved so much better. What strikes you when you are watching the movie is that it looks horribly desaturated and cheap. It's like a low budget movie from 80s you catch on TV where its played off old VHS tape. If you knew nothing about the story beforehand, didn't know its based on book from very popular author, chances are you would greatly enjoy it.
But it's simply shocking that an adaptation from one of the hottest authors right now, on the heels of the success of Gone Girl and starring one of the most famous actresses in the world was given so little faith and exposure.

Because faith is exactly what this movie needed and along with it more budget, more guts, more confidence. The story and the characters are right there, ripe for adaptation but the movie needed more of everything. It's so disenchanting seeing the vivid crimson soaked massacre from Flyyn's book replaced by grayish, lifeless footage. It's just heartbreaking seeing the simplification of Krissi Cates' story and not giving Drea de Matteo what could have been the shot of her career - ashamed, sad, broken Krissi hiding her face in her hands like an embarrassed little girl.
The casting is not great but given how cheap the film looks it's not its biggest problem because the cast manages to overcome the problems. Hendricks', for my money the most stunning woman in the World, plays Libby's plain, undesirable mother. The undesirable part was largely omitted in the movie so the strangeness of that casting is not as bad as it could have been, but the character and Hendricks'dedicated work deserved better, especially given the ridiculousness of the character's final decision. Though, to be fair, I'm not sure any amount of screen time could have made that plot point more plausible.

Corey Stoll does well as Libby's imprisoned brother, much better than Tye Sheridan, as the younger version, he doesn't really leave any impression. Chloe Grace Moretz manages not to be awful but is still a far cry from surreal and psychotic Diondra from the book. Andrea Roth, who plays the older version of the character, fares much better, nailing Diondra's aura of mystery and danger.
Matteo doesn't have much to do and her work was basically reduced to playing a stripper - I do like that actress, but let's just say it's not surprising she is getting typecast as this kind of women. The initial plans were for Hendricks to play the part and at least she would be able to channel the memory of Krissi's long lost innocence. Nicholas Hoult is very good as Lyle and him and Theron yet again have great chemistry together.

While Theron overcomes the bizarre casting, it's really a shame we didn't get Libby as she was written - tiny, with huge breasts and her red hair dyed blonde giving the appearance of her skull being on fire. Libby's appearance is not only unique, it serves a purpose of letting us know that what she has been through has been so traumatic, that as an effect she has remained a child - physically - forever. But Theron brilliantly displays her character's numbness disguising rage, hostility disguising pain and distance disguising longing. Theron may not look like Libby but it's evident at least she understood her character well.
In spite of lacking the energy of the book story the movie is very faithful to the novel. Many things were omitted, many were simplified, but at least the chain of the events and the general decisions of the characters remain faithful to Flynn's novel. Even with little budget the movie has very inspired cinematography and gorgeous score. It's a shame that the film didn't go deeper into some of the themes, but at least it includes the mention of Satanism and features few glimpses of paranoia born out of fear of it.

While Dark Places is by no means a bad film, it's nothing memorable either. With the books' disappointing answer to mysteries it would take all the elements here to work splendidly to make a great movie and they don't. But still, the film has really good atmosphere and brings another great performance from Theron.
    Dark Places (2015, 113 min)

  • Princess' Charlotte's christening was last Sunday! Have you guys seen Prince George?
  • Oh my God, he is the most adorable child. He was waving at his subjects again which is like seriously the cutest thing ever.
  • I just love George's fuck that attitude and in the contrast, how dignified his sister already is
  • You know who is not lovable? Apparently Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu is horrible to work with. I have read many stories of drama and trouble on The Revenant set but the one with Hardy either chocking him or punching Inarittu in the dick - there are many versions - is hands down my favorite.
  • (who cares he is such a sweetheart):
  • Last week I saw the snowman the crew of the movie built that is apparently supposed to be Inarittu.
  • You've gotta see that shit -------------------->
  • Apparently people were quitting left and right because he is such an asshole. I envy Americans who have the ability to quit when their boss is a piece of shit. Here the job market just doesn't allow it. I could quit on principle...and starve to death because... poverty. Win win?
  • Speaking of The Revenant, I read the latest script for the movie last week and holy shit will it be intense. There is stuff in it, including crawling inside a dead horse, which is just shocking. The whole thing is very gritty and brutal and kinda reminded me of what would western be like if it was in a setting as uncompromising as The Road. It's much more eventful, though, but it seems to me DiCaprio will be silent for a huge chunk of the movie.
  • Obviously something awful happens to Hardy in the story, because I cannot have nice things.
  • I just hope at some point of this movie he takes off hist shirt.
  • I read a blind item gossip this week that apparently there is this big producer who wants to make an actress into the next big thing so she is fake dating an older actor. Most people say it's Alicia Vikander and Fassbender. Well if that is the case - ew. Not to dating Fassy but to, you know, what's this expression I'm looking for....whoring yourself for fame.
  • Well if it's true than we have another JLaw on our hands here. She was actually on Conan a while back and kept wiping her nose with her hand. Such class.
  • It looks like Hannibal is dead. That show has the most rabid fans so it's always fun seeing their denial that "the best show on TV'(oh my God...) was canceled". I am quite disappointed in Bryan Fuller, though. What I admired about the guy was that he was so involved and devoted to each and every one of his creations and it looks that the deal with Amazon (or Netflix, was it?) fell through because Fuller is doing some other project called American Gods and would not be available to bring Hannibal for the next 2 years. It's kinda an equivalent of a spoiled child finding a more shiny new toy and just abandoning the old one. Unfortunately there is a bunch of disgruntled, whining fans attached to the latter.
  • I really need to catch up with it, though. Shirtless Armitage shows up in 2 episodes, after all/
  • People keep telling me to watch Mr Robot? What is that show? Where did it come from?
  • I started rewatching The Sopranos because it's awesome. My God this show is just so timeless. Pine Barrens? It's still one of the greatest episodes in TV history.
  •  Ant-Man looks kinda fun!
  •  I may actually go see it. I desperately need to go to movie theatre and for 2 hours forget about my job, tons of stuff I have to study and how much I'd just love to say fuck it, do none of it and just catch up on more Conan episodes.
  • Jesus, I'm still catching up with spring episodes! And currently Conan is doing Comic Con episodes so I need to catch up fast. This is really priceless:
  • I love him so much I'm even gonna see Hunger Games panel he hosted. I'm just gonna need to mute it every time JLaw opens her trap.
  • Today on Con Thrones has its annual panel and for the first time I really don't give a fuck what they have to say and what they will announce. This show is dead to me.
  • So we have Elektra for Netflix's Daredevil season 2. Why can't they cast someone famous? Also really,  Playlist? Mentioning her in Dragon Tattoo when she was on screen for maybe 1 minute and the movie is long as fuck?
  • Speaking of Marvel, I think they are currently crossing a line. 5 years of so many Marvel movies was fine but now it's overkill. It's movies, TV shows, reboots, reboots of reboots, new franchises...it's just too much. It would be better if they spread those movies out a bit not have them planned till seemingly the end of time. I'm still psyched for Ragnarok but do we need that Panther movie and the Inhumans? How much bigger can this cinematic universe get? It already takes them so much time to stuff all the Easter eggs, hints for future movies, cameos etc. that they don't have the time for actual story and character development. Example? Age of Ultron.
  • Maybe it's finally DC's chance to shine? While every project they have going on could become a disaster, at least something awfully cute happened on Suicide Squad set last week:
  • Apparently True Detective 2 is so bad it's now comical. I really want to check it out but first I need to find the time to see Penny Dreadful finale. Goddammit, how do people find the time to watch all these shows?
  • And finally two interesting pictures - new still from Crimson Peak and the very first picture of the new Ghostbusters. I think it's gonna be excellent and people really should stop whining. It's Feig and McCarthy. Everything they do is awesome.

WATCH: Awesome Comic Con trailer for Suicide Squad!

Yes! finally, the best out of the trailers that leaked from Comic Con is available in high quality - the footage for David Ayer's Suicide Squad.

The biggest deal for me is that for the very first time in history Harley Quinn is gonna be featured in theatrical movie and she is played by wonderful Margot Robbie, who just from the few glimpses in the trailer looks to have nailed the part. There is also a brief glimpse of new Joker played by Jared Leto who actually looks really terrifying.

We also get to see Will Smith, Viola Davis, Cara Delevingne and the rest of the squad. The film arrives on 5th August 2016.

  • Suicide Squad trailer is obviously the biggest deal for me this week. Damn, I might not have got Stoneheart (let it go people, we are never getting anything good out of Thrones again) but look, I'm finally getting Harley
  • The marketing branch director of WB released a statement about how this footage was just intended for the people in the room and that someone recorded it is a breach of trust. My advice to that woman? Change your job, because you suck at this.
  • It's bad enough that only the attendees there get to see the cast but the least you could do is release the footage shown there for everyone to enjoy without "poor us! it was meant to be exclusive!" statement. This is such a crock of shit and just a slap across the face for regular fans. If I could pay money to see great quality stream live, I would but you don't provide that option, so you know what? Shut up. Also what an idotic idea it would be to hide something that is not only the best out of Con's trailer this year but also gets people to stop bitching about the Joker, which we saw so much of after the first promo picture of him dropped.
  • The trailer is awesome and the best thing about it is Harley. I cannot believe there are still some people who manage to find something to complain about her - how Robbie didn't bother with Harley's voice. Harley's innocent, childlike voice would be a step too far now that they have her sporting ponytails with pink and blue dyed weaves.  Margot speaking in a sexy voice is so much more suitable for feature film Harley.
  • I just love all of the moments they featured - the bubble gum, the cell gymnastics, the madness in the Belle Reve, the sass in the car. I don't really give a fuck about all those other characters - Harley makes the movie for me. But no one looks bad. Even Jai Courtney looks all right. If you squint hard enough you can pretend it's Tom Hardy.
  • Leto as Joker, ridiculous green hair aside, was also fantastic. I really like how big of an applause he got from people during the panel. Also it looks like instead of getting Mad Love flashbacks Joker will just attack Harley and brainwash her - I'm 99% sure it's her he is speaking to in the end of the trailer.
  • So no jester hat and no Mad Love arc....but I am so psyched that I'm getting Harley, I'm able to embrace joy and not focus on what could have been. Yes, they went overboard with tattoos. Yes, Harley's costume is too loud. Yes, I wish Joker's hair weren't as green as if he was playing a guy cosplaying grunge Wylla Manderly. But these are details. The big picture looks terrific.
  • That trailer was really ridiculously well done - the song was cool, everything was well shot and saving Joker for the last few moments was a stroke of genius. And they are still shooting, yet they had so much footage to show us already!
  • Batman v Superman trailer was decent but really comparing to Suicide Squad constipated Affleck and slightly - only slightly - less constipated Cavill don't leave much impression.  Also - oh my God, Eisenberg....what were they thinking?
  • Even worse than his involvement were his words about Comic Con. There are people having the audacity to say he has dry sense of humor and he was going for hyperbole. Forget about him making a stupid joke and using a comparison that just makes him look stupid. What is really awful is how much disrespect he has shown to the people who are fans of the franchise and the attendees. I hope Con nerds destroy him. If anyone deserves the love, it's the nerds.
  • Just stop talking.
  • Deadpool trailer looked all right, but I think the promo pics were more fun than the actual footage.
  • There is a photo of Jennifer Lawrence and Sophie Turner together. I shall not link it, it. Yes, this monstrosity exists. Imagine them giggling together. Gross.
  • Actually they weren't the worst thing about X Men panel. Olivia Munn being all around awkward and saying she can deep throat a hot dog was new levels of vulgar. JLaw couldn't handle the attention going to her and started going 'what did she say'? Pathetic.
  • I still haven't see GoT CC panel. Not interested in it enough and if I finally get to see it, it will be purely because Conan is having the cast over in his show because of the Con. This is the least I ever cared about freaking Thrones.
  • Meanwhile, Richard Armitagewas adorably confused during Hannibal panel.
  • The Revenant trailer is here and it looks absolutely fucking stunning!
  • Just give DiCaprio that Oscar. Otherwise he is gonna kill himself trying.
  • Have you guys seen those fucking Emmy nominations?!
  • They have finally became more ridiculous than Oscars.
  •  No Kemper makes them a joke - Kimmy Schmidt gets 7 nominations yet the heart of the show doesn't. Kemper's charm totally managed to ground the show and save it from being over the top or annoying. What the hell is wrong with these people?
  • The cherry on top of this shit is that Clarke and Dinklage got nominated for seemingly just showing up this season because really, did they do much if anything? Headey is probably gonna win which is gonna be hilarious because you know 90% of the voters don't realize that it wasn't Headey who was naked and they will reward her for her "bravery".
  • Thrones getting writing and directing nomination for the most pathetic episode in entire series is a travesty
  • I saw This is 40. It wasn't bad, but man was it long. Still, the film was worth seeing just for these 2 Melissa McCarthy's scenes and that gag reel at the end of the movie. She is the best.
  • A real gold from Ant-Man imdb board -  thread title -"Paul Rudd in maximum security prison" post -"There's nothing that hardcore Mexican, black, and Aryan nation murderers and rapists love more than doing LIGHT COMEDY WITH PAUL RUDD in prison."
  • Let me tell you how shallow I am. Since always I wanted to hug Paul Rudd. But now... I'd climb that like a tree. I want him to talk to me dirty like he did to those kittens when he was taking pictures in Anchorman 2. I want him to do that mirror scene with me in mind.
  • Why?
  • ABBBBSSSSS.
  • Good God.
  • Let me tell you how tired I am today - I was supposed to wait an hour and go see Ant-Man but after 40 hours of work this week once the moment to just hang out and wait an hour came and then go see 2-hour long movie I decided I'll slip into a coma there even if it was Rudd being naked for those 2 hours.I'm currently operating on 3h of sleep per day and 5 black coffees. I have my week off in a month. Let's just hope I won't have a heart attack before this happens.
  • I hope I'll have enough energy to see it next week. I'm definitely gonna see it in 3D. I want to see the abs in 3D.
  • I have very tiring and difficult job, damn it, I deserve it.
  • Lilly, you lucky gal:
  • I've been watching a lot of his movies this week including the rewatch of Wanderlust (that mirror scene!) and I Love You, Man. He has also been everywhere including Buzzfeed, Late Night Show, Tonight Show, Conan's show and so many other things. What a beautiful week.

    (193) Paul Rudd's abs. In 3D. + links

  •  Yep,, made my first Cinnamon roll gifset.
  • I also made this:
  •  Sweet Lord Jesus!
  •  I saw Ant-Man today! I actually left the work early to go see Paul Rudd's abs in 3D. That's it, that was my entire interest in the film. His abs. In 3D. I actually went to my boss, did this ---->
  • and said the words "Can I leave 15 minutes early today?". He didn't ask why, thank God.
  • Because the answer was Paul Rudd's abs. In 3D.
  • The film was seriously a blast. The idea is actually almost avant garde and the CGI was so unique. Hell, even the 3D was good and not just the abs part! The visual effects were so much fun! The film was very entertaining. Yep, it did have weak points - following the formula and man, do I wish this "need no man strong no nonsense chick" crap would end - really? It's fine having a "feminist" lady to the protagonist but does she has to be such a ball busting girl? Thank God she at least made out with Paul. Otherwise it would not be realistic at all.
  • It looks Paul Rudd is the perfect man:
  • He seriously can't keep his pants on:
  • And there is this Conan bit. For those of you who don't know for years now and I mean years no matter the show - Late Night, Tonight how and now Conan, whenever Paul is on his show he makes Conan believe they will play the clip from whatever movie he is promoting and then?
  • I love him so damn much.
  • Also him and Douglas....I don't even know what to say. Just watch this.
  • Hey speaking of things I love I made a gifset of Harley and Joker and used Ultraviolence lyrics:
  • Did True Detective season 2 really use the phrase "Blue balls in your heart"? What the fuck is happening with the writers working for HBO? First True Blood, then Game of Thrones, now this. Just a chain of shit writing which is getting ridiculed (and apparently, in one case, Emmy nominated, people!)
  • Lily Rabeis returning to American Horror Story! And she will play a serial killer! And Naomi Campbell has just joined the series.
  • The Revenant is opening wide this Christmas. Can you imagine Tom Hardy and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu doing press conferences together? Oh my God.
  • Apparently the film's finale is still not shot (it's odd because a bunch of scenes from the trailer made me think of finale's script), most of Leo's role is silent (like I predicted last week in RF) and the budget doubled its size and is now 135 mln. They are gonna need to market the shit out of this movie in order for it not to lose money. This film is basically The Road meets unhinged MacGayver. Action packed it is not, people.
  • Here's a new drama gem aka The Revenant set story:
  •  "So as most people know, Hardy choked out Inarritu at the beginning of the show. I guess by the end, he and Alejandro were ok about it because as a wrap gift they got these goof posters made and gave them to everyone in the crew, Tom Hardy signed them. God almighty do I want this. (I might be getting one, actually.) Overall my man said Tom was cool as long as you didn't *beep* with him, and everyone loved him. Leo was super professional and fairly easy to work with. (I didn't work on it, just know someone that did) . Inarritu was apparently crazy, guy I know has been in the biz a long time and said this was far and away the craziest shoot he's ever been on. Over 50 crew members quit or got fired. Sometimes Alejandro would bring the entire crew in and yell at them, that's like a Michael Bay move.  I also heard Hardy went after one of the producers, not sure if he got his hands on him. One of the AD's came up to him and had to tell Tom they changed all his dialogue, Tom went absolutely crazy on the guy; the next day, Hardy came in with a giant cake for everyone and apologized. The continuity is a nightmare, they'd get 3' of snow in a day, then 2 days later it would be gone. So there's going to be re shoots, movie is way over budget & probably pushing the planned release date. It's not finished yet. On the plus side, I guess they have some kind of never before used MoCo rig that can do crazy *beep* kind of like that famous sequence in The Good Guys. There's some big ass battle scene that goes on in one shot for like minutes straight using this new kind of vis and it's going to knock everyone's socks off, it sounds really *beep* cool. I heard some of the details of what happens in it and it sounds amazing, but I'm not going to drop any spoilers. They shot the movie using almost 100% natural light, and most of it on the brand new Alexa 65 so it's going to look tits. That's all I got." *This was posted 3 Months ago but got deleted.*"
  • Hardy sounds brilliant and difficult. He is also a Virgo. Who loves dogs. And has addictive personality. I'm convinced him and me are absolutely the same.
  • It's like there were two Antichrists. Or Holiday Armadillo and Santa in one room. The world will implode.
  • Have I not gushed over how hot Hardy is in that trailer yet? Allow me.
  • My God, he looks like a lumberjack that massacres the entire forest and then fucks you right there in the wintery woods.
  • Have I actually typed those words?
  • Anyways...
  • The trailer for Spectre! Yes, let's go with that since Craig basically annihilates my libido right away. Lea Seydoux and Monica Bellucci playing Bond girls and just by doing so already making the characters interesting should be enough for me to see this one. Waltz looks kinda awful. Not only is it another of uninspired 'let's hire that foreign actor to play a villain' cliché but also he looks like he is simultaneously bored AND phoning it in.
  • Apparently Tom Cruiseis marrying a 22 year old? And people scream age difference again. He doesn't look 53. Scream about his weird ass beliefs not age if you must.
  • Hey, remember when weeks ago I was like "damn, I need to catch up on Hannibal before Armitage shows up because I'm only on 3x02". Well, the new episode is out and I'm still on episode 2.
  • Also I'm still where I was in Daredevil series.
  • ...and I still have months worth of Conan episodes to watch.
  • But never fear. In 2 weeks time it's my time to take a week off. So I shall do at least one of the above. Or just...sleep. I'm down to 4h per night again.

    Ant-Man

Marvel's reign over what seems to be the entire world - they have been getting our attention and our money for years now - has recently started to become a bit shaky. Age of Ultron, sequel to their most profitable movie yet, Avengers was disappointing. Not financially, of course, but the reception was underwhelming. And who can blame the people who were let down - Ultron repeated the sin of formulaic storyline, bland villain and frankly it was just bizarre. I mean what the hell was up with  the"hey kids, gather around and we will tell you about that time Black Widow's ovaries got removed!" thing?

But Marvel redeems itself with Ant-Man. Well, almost. First there was a hysterically overblown marketing campaign that screamed 'go see this film, we spent so much money and we are terrified it won't earn it back!'. Ant-Man managed to score #1 at box office and earn 100 million dollars worldwide in the matter of days. And what does Marvel do? Some high up guy who works for it basically says that they hoped the movie would do better. It's like a kid brings B home and you sigh to express disappointment. It just sucks of them to behave this way. Have they become so delusional that they literally think the fact a film earn 100 mln dollars in a week is something to complain over? I swear this is some mad detachment from the outside world Gwyneth Paltrow's bullshit.
Now that we got infertile Widow and corporate greed out of the way let's talk about actual movie, which is absolutely delightful and I'm hoping in the years to come people will go "hey, that's one of the better Marvel films!" and we do get a sequel. Ant-Man has everything Marvel flick should have - action, jokes, likable hero and a lot of heart.

Scott Lang (Paul Rudd, whose world domination over the hearts of everyone is complete, bastard has the abs now) gets out of prison after being there for several years for burglarizing a company that basically stoke from is customers - Scott broke in and gave the money back to the ordinary people. But life outside is not easy - in spite of his degree Scott cannot find a job and his ex-wife doesn't want to let him see his beloved daughter, Cassie. But soon Scott gets caught up in something huge.
Scott is contacted by Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas, so awesome in the role). Pym wants to stop his former protege Darren Cross (Corey Stoll) from discovering the formula that allows shrinking living organisms - Hank did it years ago and was himself Ant-Man, a  hero who used his power for good. Now he needs Scott to wear the suit and stop Cross. They are aided by a bunch of ants and Pym's reluctant daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly), who resents her father who distanced himself from her after the death of her mother.

The idea of a person shrinking down to the size of ant is not something new - we saw shrinking in films before. But add to that commanding legions of ants? This could potentially be ridiculous but it's not because Ant-Man strikes the perfect balance between serious and silly. The film is entertaining and action packed and it  just forces you to accept the fact that the main hero is swimming through the water pipe on a raft made out of the ants.
The concept allows the film to have some really awesome visual effects - the sequence where Scott wears the suit for the first time is just mesmerizing as is entire quantum realm scene. That one was actually compared to bookshelves in space from Interstellar but it works here because no one is telling us that this is a super serious science fiction movie and then shows us McConaughey coding a watch in fucking space. This is a Marvel movie. Ants putting sugar in the tea? Sure. Device that can make things big? OK. Shrinking without no end? Go for it.

The film also has emotional core which is great because I cannot remember the last time Marvel movie actually moved me. We have Scott being an awesome dad and really loving his daughter - there is a brief moment where he uses the suit to sneak in and give her a kiss which was lovely and if you weren't hopelessly in love with Rudd before, you will be after this happens. But even more emotional is the arc with Dr. Pym and his daughter. The scene where he tells Hope what happened to her mom actually made me cry.
One of the annoying things lately is that these studios idea of a cool female character is a tough chick who needs no man. Hope is like that too but thankfully Lilly and Douglas play their parts so well that the other side of Hope - the daughter side - is so well acted and written, which in the end that rescues her character. When she yells "dad!" when Hank is shot Lilly really sells the shit out of this moment.

The romantic angle feels a bit forced, but I suppose after Hope checked out shirtless Scott and you know, that huge deal with him saving the world and rescuing everyone while being pretty much the perfect guy entire time, it would be insane if she didn't make out with him in that hallway.
    Insane.

The supporting cast is really great and while not all jokes land, Scott's team members played by Michael Peña, David Dastmalchian and rapper T.I. are hilarious. Peña deserves all the praise he is getting for his work here, but really it's when they work as the team that's when the scenes are the funniest. The bit where they say Scott is in trouble and nothing is gonna stop them and then they see a bunch of police cars and back up is hysterical.
Michael Douglas is really fantastic here and creates such a great character. You can clearly see that Douglas is having a blast being in a movie like this but he also brings so much heart to the role, especially when we get to see his pain of the loss of his wife. Douglas also has terrific chemistry with everyone who shares scenes with him.

The villain of the movie isn't the greatest but usually I just don't care what happens to the bad guy in these movies - I'll give Ant-Man that I actively hated the fucker here. These poor lambs!
But the film would never work if we didn't have the right actor for the main part and man, is the casting of Rudd brilliant. He is so sweet and likable, funny, charming, charismatic and good looking. He is just perfect to play the hero.  The film doesn't need to waste any time of getting us to like this guy - we already do. Add to that insanely sweet scenes with his daughter and the fact he is saving the world and it's just perfect. I used the word "perfect" a lot didn't I? Well, he is, damn it.

Rudd also co-wrote the script and Ant-Man is easily the most humor packed Marvel movie to date. It's also incredibly cute and clever - the film's final action piece set on Thomas the Tank Engine tracks is such a blast and easily one of the most original ideas ever in Marvel film. There is also a score which is so good - grand when it needs to be but whimsical at other times.
A lot was made of Edgar Wright being attached to make the movie and dropping out due to 'creative differences'. People have been whining about it for months now. As good as Wright is, he is so overrated and director Peyton Reed did very well here. Ant-Man is easily the most unique Marvel movie to date. I mean, come on, there is even an awesome Zoolander reference here.

While the movie is not perfect, the strong father/daughter theme gives the film the heart and the committed performances by wonderfully cast actors ground the story and make things believable for the audience. Ant-Man, the character, may be tiny but the movie has a big, big heart.

  • I went to work on Monday and we got a plan with the info of who we are gonna be working with for the next 2 months. It's gonna be hell.
  • So I did the only thing I could do.
  • I took the rest of a week off.
  • Yep, I said fuck the lemons and bailed. Because the lemons I'm about get in the next two months will probably give me diarrhea and fucking kill me. I'm being literal here.
  • I've been chilling and catching up on stuff. I also saw a whole bunch of Paul Rudd's movies. I've done absolutely nothing productive. Just sitting here, watching Paul, sleeping and playing with Gustav.
  • Monday? Paul's movies. Tuesday? Hannibal. Wednesday? Sopranos. Thursday? Conan. Today? More Paul.
  • I finally saw Wet Hot American Summerfor the first time because the prequel series drops today at Netflix. It was so funny! Also Paul's kissing scenes - someone should give him a cherry to tie with his tongue in one of the talk shows. I think he could do it double times over.
  • I really look forward to watching the series:
  •  I started watching They Came Together but haven't finished it yet. Not that I didn't like it, but it was like 4 am so I figured I should probably go to sleep. Again with the crazy make out Rudd scene, my God...
  • I also rewatched Anchorman. Much as I don't really like this movie, it is - just like an Inception - much more enjoyable if you watch it purely to drool over one of the actors in it.
  • Sex Panther <333
  • I've been making a lot of edits from Ant Man, this one being my fav:
  • I rewatched Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Knocked Up. Kunu is like the greatest character ever.
  • someone has done God's work and uploaded the history of Paul pranking Conan on youtube:
  • HOW have I not seen this before?!:
  • I finally caught up with Hannibal which means I basically sat on my ass and saw 5 episodes in the row. As amazing as Richard Armitage is already, Joe Anderson stole the show as Mason Verger. I downright hated Michael Pitt's ridiculously over the top performance as Mason in s2 and Anderson really nailed the role, he was hilarious.
  • I was thankful his face wasn't as horrific as Gary Oldman's in Hannibal - that was the most disgusting shit I've seen in my entire life.
  • Awful news - A24, which is as we all know terrible at marketing and basically releasing films which is the basis for this company for crying out loud, is planning on releasing The Witch...next year. So the movie which got amazing reviews is not only not being brought to festivals but now they will hold it back and we have to wait almost a year for it. It was only shown on Sundance so far. God, I hate this so much.
  • The movie looks so fucking awesome and there isn't even the trailer for it. SHIT!
  • However there is this movie called Queen of Earth which looks really intriguing and the poster for it is simply gorgeous, it reminds me of old Repulsion posters
  • Following my edit of Harley using Ultraviolence lyrics I made one with Hole's Doll Parts and Lana's Velvet Crowbar
  • Spotlight trailer was released online and it looks pretty great. Ruffalo's hair in that is a disaster, though.
  • Apparently Game of Thrones will last 8 seasons, not 7 as previously stated. I don't even have the strength to rant about the fact we are getting 3 more seasons of fan fiction and there is no Stoneheart in sight and they offed Stannis already.
  • "Fuck the lemons" and let's watch Paul Rudd movies.
  •  MettelRay has been watching Parks and Rec for the first time and loving it. Everyone should see this show. It has Ron Swanson, it's the warmest, funniest show since Friend and just like Friends it has Paul Rudd in it
  • Ruth enjoyed What We Do in the Shadows, which I really ought to see soon
  • Brittani participates in Dream Vacation blogathon
  • Steven reviews delightful Begin Again
  • Andrew shared his nominations and wins for 2013

    (195) Welcome to Westeros, Al + links

  • Yep. Ian McShane is gonna be on Game of Thrones.
  • This is almost too much. I was like "whhaaaat?" when I saw the news. I almost thought these incompetent hacks from EW were simply trolling us. But it turns out that it is true - Al Swearengen is coming to Westeros. I only wish the show was still worthy of him being in it.
  • It is not.
  • What is wrong with HBO? First they let Dumb and Dumber wreck the show beyond belief with whatever the fuck that season 5 was and now they are giving them 3 more seasons and all those amazing actors are signing up (Max Von Sydow joined too...that was another news that made me think "is it April Fools? Is it for real?". He is playing the recast role of Three Eyed Raven aka old dude sitting in a tree). I cannot get over how the last episodes were ridiculously rushed and filled with 'hurry up' fan fic and now they are gonna go 8 seasons which means they could have had just followed the books in the first place, go to fucking Riverlands already and spare us the atrocity of Sansa and Jaime's storylines this year.
  • Oh and to add to my Thrones watches-it-hates-it-still-talks-about-it schizophrenia they are casting someone the description of whom sounds like Frey. Stoneheart hype never dies.
  • As for the great and powerful McShane we still don't know who he is playing but we know he won't have much screen time, his part however is "crucial". My bet? Howland Reed.
  • Oh my God, Wet Hot American Summer the series is almost impossibly dumb (mostly in fun way) but it has such a huge dose of Rudd!
  • I actually kinda liked They Came Together. It's not laugh out loud funny but it is clever at poking fun at so many of romantic comedy tropes. I just wish I didn't find Amy Poehler so annoying. She is fine as Leslie Knope but this movie needed someone, I don't know a bit more cute, she is kinda shrill. If this was loosely based on You've got Mail...please, Meg Ryan is cute as a button. Amy is kinda mean looking.
  • Also, how insane was her character? --->
  • A bonus is that Paul says the words "I wanna fuck you so bad" in that one. Nevermind the context, which is seriously disturbing.
  • So I caught up with the entire second season of True Detective during Saturday night and I really don't understand why people are being so harsh on it. The atmosphere is good, the music is great, the plot is engaging and I really don't know why people go 'what is going on?' when the narrative is pretty straightforward, all these cops are doing are following the leads. The acting is good and Vaughn is fun to watch. There are some stupid sub plots like the whole deal with the rape and the paternity thing and Vaughn's character and his wife's marital problems but other than that it's an entertaining show.
  • The atmosphere and the music are the best things about it and I really like Rachel McAdams' performance and character. I really don't get the hate because that show has a lot more going for it than a whole bunch of crap on TV these days and that massacre at the end of episode 4 was really one of the best scenes I've seen in a really long time.
  • I really think this may be McAdams' best work. She should submit the episode with the orgy for Emmy consideration, it was really amazing.
  • Also, fucking finally:
  • What I did not enjoy was Trainwreck. That Schumer chick...I just don't find her funny. The film wasn't nearly as amusing as other movies from Apatow - come on, even funny people had hilarious Eric Bana - and other than Bill Hader there was nothing worth seeing there. They even wasted Tilda Swinton. This was filled with a bunch of nasty, vulgar scenes which weren't funny - Apatow's jokes not always land in his films but mostly they do, here they crashed and burned - and the whole film seems like a vehicle to please Schumer's ego - oh you're so cool and funny! You can get any guy you want even if your looks are below average, you are inconsiderate, rude and don't care about people's feelings!
  • Come on, really?!
  • Alexander Skarsgard went to the premiere of his recent movie in drag, proving he is prettier than most women out there.
  • Miles Teller is a male (?) equivalent of JLaw.
  • People call him "unfiltered".
  • I call him a twat.
  • This is from Esquire interview "The waitress delivers the entrées, scallops for him and pork belly for you. The pork looks great and you offer him some. "I'll take a little bit," he says, sawing at it. Then: "I can't cut this." You have to cut his meat for him, a man who ten minutes earlier showed you an iPhone photo of his back muscles to prove how strong he is. He wants you to cut it small.".
  • God, the journalist should have just stabbed him.
  • Fantastic Four movie is getting ripped apart to shreds. It seems it is actually worse than Batman & Robin because it is actually taking itself seriously, so instead of being one of those so bad it's funny movies it's just dull and terrible.
  • I went to see The Gift today. It's a fantastic movie....until the ending. It's just....stupid. It's paper thin to the point that you have a solution to the whole mystery as soon as you realize what has happened. It's not a bad idea, I think that those who scream bloody murder about ending being 'deplorable' are hysterics, but it's not a well written ending. The most important thing in the twisty thriller is a final twist and that twist was just not thought out at all. It's such a shame because it really would be one of the year's best films, but the ending made me decrease rating from 9/10 to 7/10. It is fantastically directed though and I'm all for Edgerton delivering more creepy, dark movies like this one.
  • My old phone kinda broke - literally - this week. It was a flip phone, which I was fond of using. Again, people, I do own a VCR so a flip phone is nothing. So now I have Samsung smartphone which is like something from sci-finovel to me. It also means I have instagram now which means that I was putting you all through horrific pictures of me and my sad little expensive clothes buying  pictures of my yorkie taking filled life:
  • But, thanks to that amazing technology I can now read e-books at work and I'm halfway through Girl on a Train. It's pretty good book but there was this huge big secret uncovered halfway through, from one of the main character's past, involving an infant and it's just so saddening and tragic. I hope the book becomes more thrilling and less depressing soon. The movie is apparently in the works and it has a huge potential, I hope as rumoured Emily Blunt plays the main part because it's a very baity role - an alcoholic who broke down because of divorce and now takes a train and watches people. Blunt would be so good in such a role.

    The Film Emotion Blogathon

    $
    0
    0

Connor over at Conman at the Movies decided to create his first blogathon. Inspired by Inside Out, the general concept is simple:

1.) Pick five films to represent the five emotions in Inside Out. The criteria for choosing these films is listed below. I would be willing to allow a tie, if you couldn’t decide between two films to best represent one of the emotions.
2.) Write out five paragraphs, (one for each film) talking about the movies and why you chose them.
3.) Post them on your blog (or Tumblr or whatever).
4.) Send me the link by posting it here in the comments.
What I’m looking for are five movies that make YOU feel a certain emotion. Here’s what to look for:
JOY: First of all, you want to pick a movie that makes you happy. The kind of movie that you put on whenever you’re in a bad mood that never fails to lighten your spirits. It can be a family film, a romance, a comedy – as long as there’s a smile on your face by the end credits, it should be fair game.
SADNESS: Now for the movie that made you cry the most. From Bambi to Titanic, there are plenty of tear-jerker movies out there. These are movies where you gravitate towards the main characters and really don’t want to see anything bad happen to them. Maybe a character dies, maybe the guy doesn’t get the girl, but your eyes should be pretty watery by the film’s end.
FEAR: This is the movie that gave you the most nightmares. Pretty self explanatory. There are plenty of classic horror movies to choose from, but it doesn’t have to be an out-and-out horror film. If the movie’s about a more subtle kind of fear, or if the movie just has a creepy atmosphere, that should work. Whether blunt or subtle, this is the movie that scares the **** out of you
ANGER: This is a movie that you flat out hated. Not a movie that was dull or boring, but a movie that just fills you up with rage just thinking about it. Maybe it’s a movie made by a certain director that had so much potential, maybe it’s an adaptation or a sequel that just didn’t do the original justice. It could also be a movie where your anger isn’t directed at the movie, but at the characters. Ever wanted to scream at movie characters for making such incredibly stupid decisions?
DISGUST: This last one is a bit tricky, I’ll let you interpret it the way you want. It could be a horror film with a lot of really awful imagery that you don’t want to look at, it could be a comedy with a bunch of gross-out humor that you can barely listen to. It could even be a movie that you like, but your disgust comes towards the basic premise in a grander sense, like being disgusted by what you see in 12 Years A Slave or Schindler’s List. Either way, this film should make you cringe.
    Here are my choices:

    JOY: Notting Hill

This is such a pleasant movie. Not only is it a charming love story, I love how sweet and caring Will's family and friends are. There are also very enduring interactions between supporting characters, including Will's handicapped friend and her husband and the legendary Spike and Will's sister. It's such a lovely, fun film.

    SADNESS: This is 40

It made me sad that Mann and Rudd's character had passion and chemistry in Knocked Up but here it was all so...difficult. Oh God. You find your perfect guy and then what? Life happens, kids happen. Is it all just heading to routine, cheating or death? That's depressing.

    FEAR: Repulsion

Yeah I'm not gonna lie, sometimes I fear I may lose it completely like the heroine of this one did.

    ANGER: Brokeback Mountain

It makes me so fucking angry that even today, in this day and age there is still so much ignorance, persecution and hatred towards what is essentially the most incredible thing - love.

    DISGUST: Project Nim

"Human" race is a disease killing this planet.

  • I've been rewatching Archer and I finally reached season 5 and 6! Who among you watches the show? It's the funniest thing on TV and you gotta admire the attention of detail there - so many running gags, all of them so funny. I really hope we see Babou soon, he wasn't back since season 3!Also I never knew about ocelots before the show. They are so cute!
  • Rouge Nation was awesome! Rebecca Ferguson totally stole show. She reminded me a lot of Ruth Wilson with her looks and charisma. She was the best thing about the film but it was also very enjoyable thanks to the great action scenes. No, but seriously, that woman:
  • I legit gasped when that moment happened. This is what happens when after years of seeing unrealistic female characters in action movies we get to witness actual woman kicking ass. Angelina Jolie as action star? Give me a break, that chick can barely stand up. Here is a proper woman. Tom Cruise really has a good eye - apparently he spotted Rebecca in The White Queen and liked her work so much he gave her the part. She is currently my win for Best Supporting Actress and I'd be surprised if she leaves top 5 before the end of the year.
  • You know what I loved? How she used her tighs in fight. I haven't seen that since Famke Janssen in Goldeneye and Kathleen Turner in War of the Roses. I enjoyed seeing that because let me tell you my tighs could definitely suffocate a guy.
  • I'm not gonna do a review for this one because it would just be me going gay for her character.
  • I also saw What we Do in the Shadows and it was so funny. I lost it when Viago bit this chick and hit the artery. He was the best in the gang.
  • We have a new Crimson Peak poster which is infinetly better than previous posters.
  • There's a new trailer for Sicario which is really cool, in spite of a bit odd song choice
  •  What didn't work for me at all what The Hateful Eight trailer. While watching it I felt as if I was watching a comedy sketch where not a single joke actually landed and made me laugh. Hopefully the film is good and it's just the trailer that is, to put it mildly, bad.
  • So here I am freaking out that there is only 4 months left in the year and my Best and Worst post is still just a draft (Spoiler alert - at the moment Fury Road has 22 wins for 45 positive categories) but you know who is being chased by time more? Get this:
  • Earlier this week the news was out that The Revenant wrapped up. Well, the news turned out to be premature as the film is still missing the ending which they are about to shoot in Argentina. Every day Inarittu remains unmurdered I'm simply stunned.
  • Horrible, horrible news - beloved and adorable Uggie was put to sleep at the age 13. I almost cried when I found out. It's just so awful, why do things like diseases and death happen to dogs? They are the most wonderful, innocent creatures. Jean Dujardin and Reese Witherspoonpaid homage to Uggie. I suppose we should be grateful he had a good - and long (apparently 13 dog years is 100 years for a human) life. As you know my awards have a special place for Uggie - the annual award for best dog in films is named after him. And the Academy better pays tribute to him in In Memoriam! Rest in Peace, adorable sweetie. Heaven has new angel now.
  • My mother was upset by the news too - she is also, just like me, upset whenever something happens to a dog, also we saw The Artist together. Needless to say Gustav has been getting more toys and treats than usual this week. He is the most spoiled dog in our neighborhood. They even let him into the stores and the clerks actually leave their posts to pet him.
  • Seriously, gods, why do you allow anything bad and painful to happen to these creatures? The only theory I have is that the dogs have so much love to give they couldn't possibly live as long as humans do because we are not worthy of this love.
  • It's time to start drinking heavily - it's only August and Redmayneis already whoring himself to get another Oscar. I suspect he is gonna start chasing Jenner now, in hopes of a selfie with her.
  • I thought Natalie Dormer was smart. What a shock to discover she is an idiot. I guess years of hanging around Sophie Turner and Jennifer Lawrence finally had its effects. I wish her quick ending to your career which started with her flashingher boobs and hopefully ends with her smirking her way through Thrones until they finally off your character.
  • Speaking of Thrones, Walder Frey is gonna be in season 6. If they don't do Stoneheart it will be - and I'm completely serious here - the biggest failure when it comes to adapting books in history.
  • HBO has the opportunity here. The opportunity to have the best twist in history of their network.
  • But it also has the opportunity to make my other dream come true - apparently there are talks of doing Deadwood movie. I'm just over the moon about that news. I love that show so much. I'm gonna do a rewatch soon. If I were to go on a desert island and I were to bring two things I'd bring the entire series of The Thick of It and this. It's that good.
  • Back to JLaw - from latest issue of EW this is what she said about working with O. Russell - “I always see the wide eyes of people who’ve never worked with him before. I tell them, ‘You have to let go of all your sh-t. You are the paint. He’s the paintbrush and the canvas". Oh my God. How deep. I think shit - plunger - toilet comparison would be better.
  • You know FOX should have just canceled that Fantastic Four movie and release behind the scenes documentary.
  • Exciting news about upcoming season of American Horror Story - we finally got first info about the characters but the best part is that not only Lily Rabe is returning but she is set to play Aileen Wuornos! Yes, the same one that Charlize Theron played in Monster.
  • Lana Del Rey's new video is out and it is literally explosive!
  • I'm dying for a new album. All I listen to is her old stuff and "Brothers in Arms" from Mad Max soundtrack. Seriously.
  • I haven't found the time to catch up on Hannibal in 2 weeks now. Yet again, I'll just wait and binge 3 episodes tomorrow. However thanks to tumblr I saw these visuals from the last episode:
  • Whoever pulled the plug on this show over at NBC will burn in hell. This is just beyond gorgeous.
  • I finished Girl on a Train - I gave it 7/10 - it was good and I only guessed the twist 2 chapters before it was revealed who the killer was. Overall I recommend the book and I hope the movie will happen because the material is very cinematic.
  • Now I'm reading the book which I already like even more - Luckiest Girl Alive. Let me come clear here - the way I find out about these books is that I read on a movie news site that the adaptation is in the works. These news usually have a snippet about what this particular book is about and when I go "oh, that sounds interesting" and if it appears the book is some sort of thriller with a twist, I will read it for sure. I will devour it because I'm dying to find out what that fucking twist is. So this one is gonna be a movie too, and much like with Gone Girl, Reese Witherspoon  bought the rights to the adaptation. I've read 1/5 of the book so far and it is excellent. It goes back and forth between the life of a girl in present time - who is super successful, rich and does her best to be skinny and is preparing her wedding to a rich guy - and her time at posh school when she was fourteen and something horrible has happened. The book reminds me a bit of American Psycho with detailed descriptions of food and clothes and of Gone Girl thanks to the fact it's told in first person and we know all about the heroine who is also very deceptive and manipulative.
  • So anyways in this book the main character eats a spoonful of organic peanut butter and is size 4. Few days back I read about Beyonce's diet who apparently eats some sort of salad "if she wants to go crazy and eat whatever she wants". Jesus Christ! I'm size 10 (going by UK sizes). If I were to live on a salad and a spoon of peanut butter I'd die. Also I wouldn't be able to work or function. How do people like these actually live? How do you perform at work if you are hungry as fuck?  I don't think anyone I know is size 4. I think this one girl I know is size 6 but only because she is on some sort of diet for health reasons. Yeah I'm sure it's nice to have a tigh gap so that you don't have friction burns when you walk in hot weather and it's nice to have all the jeans fit you but why do women torture themselves like this? To get a rich husband? Isn't it better to like...eat what you want, study and have your own money? Also really do men want to be with a woman who can poke their eye out with her bony elbow?  I saw Margot Robbie and Sophie Turner being called "curvy" few times. This ain't curvy, for the love of God. Christina Hendricks is curvy. These girls probably weight their lettuce.

Wendell over at Dell on Movies is hosting 2015 edition of his Against the Crowd blogathon.

The rules for participation are simple:

    1. Pick one movie that "everyone" loves (the more iconic, the better). That movie must have a score of at least 75% on rottentomatoes.com. Tell us why you hate it.

    2. Pick one movie that "everyone" hates (the more notorious, the better). That movie must have a score of less than 35% on rottentomatoes.com. Tell us why you love it.

    3. Include the tomato meter scores of both movies.

    4. Use one of the banners in this post, or feel free to create your own

    LOVE:

This is actually my favorite Woody Allen movie if I think about how many times I rewatched it. And I've seen almost all of his movies.

So many times in Allen's films some other actor plays the character that Woody Allen would play himself and usually the results are insanely annoying - like with Larry David or Kenneth Brannagh. But Jason Biggs is so funny and natural here. Christina Ricci is unbelievably annoying, but she is supposed to be given that her character is like that. But what makes the film so hilarious and one of my favorite comedies is the character of David Dobel, played by Allen himself. The lines, the situations, the humour - it all works and the scene where Dobel wrecks the car of some guys who were rude to him is hysterical. I really don't get the hate this movie gets.

Also that critic consensus is ridiculous. Every single Woody Allen's movie recycles other Woody Allen's movies. There are so many things in common between Crimes & Misdemeanors & Match Point and Scoop & Small Time Crooks they may as well be remakes of each other. I always viewed Anything Else as the modern retelling of Annie Hall for younger audience. Also the film has such amazing lines:

David Dobel: ...and the next thing I knew they made some crack about my religion which I found in poor taste.
Jerry Falk: Religion? You're an atheist!
David Dobel: Yes, I'm an atheist, but I resented the fact however obliquely that they implied that Auschwitz was basically just a theme park.

Fuck you, that film is funny!

    HATE:

This movie is just retarded. Completely. I know it's inappropriate to use that adjective but it's the only one that encapsulates my thoughts on this flick. How it is getting praise I'll never know. I remember that while watching it I was cringing the whole time. Edgar Wright is overrated as fuck too, by the way. Oh God, the amount of whining going on on every single Ant-Man board that Edgar "second coming of Christ" Wright didn't direct it! Well I'm glad he didn't, given that he made this movie which is seriously one of the dumbest films I've seen. It's such a turd, you guys.

The trailer for "The Witch" is finally here!

Oh my! How long I waited - ever since the movie premiered at Sundance and got amazing reviews it has become my most anticipated film to come. But then the rights went to A24, which is so bad at marketing movies, and then it was a chain of more disappointments - months without screenings, no new reviews, no trailer or even a poster.

Well, it's finally here, both the trailer and the poster for the film! The release is set vaguely for 2016, so it's still a long wait but something tells me it will be worth it.

New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness, with five children. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family begins to turn on one another. In his debut feature, writer/director Robert Eggers painstakingly designs an authentic re- creation of New England -- generations before the 1692 trials in Salem -- evoking the alluring and terrifying power of the timeless witch myth. Told through the eyes of Thomasin, the teenage daughter (in a star-making performance by Anya Taylor-Joy), and supported by haunting camera work and an ominous score, The Witch is a chilling portrait of a family unraveling within their own fears and anxieties, leaving them prey for an inescapable evil.

  • The Witch trailer is so freaking awesome and everyone seems to be loving it which is great. I have a small hope these....lovely and talented - and so skilled at what they do - people over at A24 (sarcasm sign! sarcasm sign! sarcasm sign!) see how much interest is there for this one and they decide to release it sooner than 2016. My God, some flick with Segrl and Eisenberg they can release this year, but this they can't? Are they kidding?
  • Also as a Wiccan I just love whenever I get to do this. Although really, more films like Practical Magic wouldn't hurt.
  • Me...sad. That's my reaction to The Man from U.N.C.L.E. not very good box office numbers. It's basically Henry Cavill's James Bond audition, why the fuck would people not see that?  Look, I haven't seen the film (yet) but Ritchie made my third favorite movie of all time, gave a beginning to Jason Statham's career and handcuffed RDJ to the bed post and covered his junk with pillow only. The guy is a hero. So it's a shame that the film is not earning money.
  • At least Henry is getting good reviews out of this. He is so heartbreakingly beautiful. I actually recently realized  he may be too beautiful. No, seriously, this is the kind of the realizations I have. Not "maybe I should study more to really pass the exam this year" or "maybe I should look for a job closer to what I want to do so I don't need to work in that hellhole surrounded by unimaginable cuntiness any longer" (I had a fun week at work - sarcasm sign!). No, my realizations are like that - Henry Cavill is just too beautiful to exist.  Like literally, even if you think you're hot you look at him and you think "well, that's just out of my league".  Kaley Cuoco, who is not a bad looking girl, looked like what I imagine a woman who cleans up toilets at the train station looks (these toilets being in the shittiest part of my Eastern European country, like back in the 80's when Russians ruled us and I imagine they looked so bad that they made Trainspotting crapper look like Beyonce's golden one) next to him when they were "dating" (which must have been some sort of publicity stunt).
  • I read there is a scene where his bath robe is opened and you can see his chest hair.
  • When I finally see it, I'm gonna pass the fuck out.
  • There's a rumor out there that George Miller may be making Man of Steel 2. As much as I'd love for DC to have a guaranteed awesome Superman movie at last, Miller really needs to bring us more Mad Max awesomeness.
  • Meanwhile there is really amusing and surreal anecdote that Michael Shannonshared about Batman v Superman.
  • There are new Harley pictures! It looks like she is going to be a tattoo artist.
  • So the word is that Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 is getting delayed because Ridley Scott insists on making Prometheus 2 before Neill does his thing. Look, I was one of, it seems, very few people who actually loved Prometheus but Scott needs to back the fuck off and give Neil the first spot. Yes, it's not his fault that the franchise got derailed - and I blame Cameron for steering it from horror to action - but making a decent Ripley starring Alien film should be a priority. Also the more time for them to write the script Prometheus 2, the better. Even I agree they really should have put more thought into the first one.
  • Here we go, the first look at Lady Gaga in American Horror Story: Hotel. And the first creepy teasers are finally here!
  • I finally caught up with Hannibal and holy shit is Richard Armitage really amazing as Franics Dollarhyde. He is literally better with each episode. It's so saddening NBC pulled the plug and Fuller is not willing to make another season right now. And woah are Francis' scenes with Reba amazing. That tiger scene was so beautiful, as was the sex scene too. I'm yet to see yesterday's episode but I know what happens and damn, are characters impossible to kill on that show.
  • I cannot remember the last time I saw an actual movie other than the recent rewatch of Mad Max: Fury Road. Oh, this is bad. I did read 2 books in the last two weeks but seriously, the films are piling up. I saw 2 Conan episodes this week, so I'm down to like....55 to catch up with.
  • Luckiest Girl Alive! I couldn't tear myself from that book. I have about 50 pages to go but seriously yesterday I reached chapter 12, which all the reviews hyped and I nearly shat myself. I was sitting at work and actually gasping as I was scrolling the pages on my smartphone (ah, technology!). It is so good. Oh my God, so good. They better not screw up that adaptation because if done right and if done without worrying about gore this can be one hell of a sequence.
  • I love the book so much that I made a gifset illustrating it:
  • Judging from the number of notes I got the people who read the books out of NYT bestsellers list and tumblr crowd are mutually exclusive.
  • I've been rewatching Desperate Houseviews. God I love Bree so much. I forgot how entertaining that show is, and funny too. It's good because I really need funny things in my life right now.
  • Rebecca Ferguson joined Emily Blunt in adaptation of Girl on a Train. I'm thrilled for Rebecca and this is a very good casting, considering the two look a lot alike. My problem is that when reading the book I really despised her character, Anna. I suspect Ferguson playing the part will soften my heart.
  • And while we are on the topic I have actual post prepared about upcoming adaptations of some of the awesome books I read so that's coming Monday.
  •  As I'm rewatching Desperate Housewivesvinnieh is watching it for the first time and he posted a great review of season 3

  • MettelRay reviews Ant-Man
  • Andrew writes about his own movie God - Xavier Dolan

Sharp Objects, The Girl on the Train, Luckiest Girl Alive - musings on upcoming adaptations

    $

    0
Crime and thriller novels are really almost exclusively what I read. Since last year I was devouring them whenever I had the time and that time, sadly, usually is only July and August. So beginning with Gone Girl I went through many of the hot releases in the genre. Three of those, all three being wonderful books, are being developed into movies. Let's speculate:

    1. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
"There was nothing I wanted to do more than be unconscious again, wrapped in black, gone away. I was raw. I felt swollen with potential tears, like a water balloon filled to burst. Begging for a pin prick."

Plot: The story revolves around Camille Preaker, a journalist with a dark past, who returns to her home town where horrific murders of little girls - the victims have all their teeth pulled out - are taking place.

The protagonist: Beautiful Camille who has the habit of carving words into her skin. She is gorgeous but almost her entire body is covered in scars and she always covers them.  She also has very toxic relationship with her mother.

Chances of the movie being made: Imdb says "Entertainment One and producers Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) to bring Sharp Objects to TV.". The rights are sold, but I'm very skeptical. There is a phenomenon out there that I'm almost tempted to call Gone Girl curse. First Gone Girl fails to score big during awards season. Then there is disastrous marketing for Dark Places. Then Flynn's Utopia project falls apart. I'm truly not holding my breath for this being made. It would be a shame if this didn't get adapted properly, seeing how it's as good of a book as Gone Girl and it has even better adaptation potential. But if all it gets is production values and the care of Dark Places (where the appreciation for the material they had, except for the cast, wasn't there) then perhaps it's best if no one touches it until they have the means and the will to do so.

Cast: I'd cast the gorgeous and elegant Rebecca Ferguson as Camille and Michelle Pfeiffer as her cruel, controlling, posh mother. There is also the part of Camille's mysterious step sister. Elle Fanning would be perfect here but she is gonna be too old by the time this gets made, if it ever gets made. I'd love for Stephen Dillane to show up as Camille's protective boss. I just envision Stephen whenever I can while reading books.

    2. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
“"When did you become so weak?” I don’t know. I don’t know where that strength went, I don’t remember losing it. I think that over time it got chipped away, bit by bit, by life, by the living of it.”

Plot: Rachel is a broken, divorced alcoholic. In her empty life her biggest pleasure is staring through the window of a train every day at a couple, living in the house the train passes by, whose names she doesn't even know. One day Rachel sees something that changes everything.

The protagonist: Once beautiful Rachel who now has put a bit of weight and spends majority of her time being drunk, which also causes black outs that makes it almost impossible for her to remember what happened.

Chances for the movie being made: High, it's already in development. The book is really gripping and the portrayal of alcoholism is very convincing and realistic. There is also a big mystery, one that I myself guessed only 2 chapters before the answer to the big question was revealed, so let's hope whoever writes the script can scatter hints and red herrings as well as Hawkins did in the novel.

Cast: I really hope Emily Blunt - who is in talks to be in the film - stars as Rachel because she would be a wonderful choice. There are two other big female characters - Anna, the woman for whom Rachel's husband left her and Megan, whose role in the story I should not reveal. It was just announced this week that Rebecca Ferguson is in talks to play Anna. Well, I will definitely hate Anna less in the movie, then. Casting someone like Paul Rudd SPOILER as Tom END OF SPOILER would be a good move. As for Megan, they need a lovely looking blonde so perhaps Carey Mulligan?

    3. Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll
"You only scream when you’re finally safe."

Plot: Ani is beautiful, skinny, wealthy. She has a rich fiance and everything that a modern, successful woman is told to have in order to be perceived as successful. But the flashbacks to Ani's school years reveal real Ani and the horrific violence and life-altering humiliation she was subjected to.

The protagonist: Ani, coming from rich but ordinary background and climbing up to the highest level of social ladder.

Chances for the movie being made: It's happening. Reese Witherspoon, who truly has an amazing eye for books that would make great movies (she was also the one who bought the right for Gone Girl) is gonna produce the film and Lionsgate recently acquired the rights. The novel moves back and forth between the chapters set in present time and the time Ani was 14 year old girl in elite school. We gradually find out what the horrible things that happened to Ani are in the past tense chapters, and in the present we see that Ani is not as cold, calculating and cruel as we previously suspected. It's a very rich and dynamic character and the book's pivotal sequence is truly mesmerizing and shocking and it would make for one hell of a movie sequence. Also the construction of the story is just wonderful because you keep reading and reading to discover the answers - what happened to Ani in school? What is "the incident"? What happened to her class mates? Why is it so important to her that people believe her? Why wouldn't they believe her? They will have to make sure there are no spoilers in the marketing materials when it comes to this film. There is also a lovely subplot involving Ani and her former teacher - Andrew - and you just root for these two to end up together. Don't be fooled by the not so great cover, the silly way the name of the protagonist is spelled or some negative opinions on Goodreads. This is a terrific book and the film has the potential of being amazing.

Cast: I envision Abbey Lee, who was so wonderful in Mad Max: Fury Road, as Ani. There's gonna need to be another actress for 14 year old Ani as she has completely different figure than present time Ani who is approaching size 0. Casting anyone other than a model for grown up Ani and forcing the actress to lose weight would be just cruel here, though apparently a whole bunch of actresses are either size 2 or 0 - what the hell, does anyone actually eat? Seeing how Ani's fiance Luke is supposed to be this guy everyone wants - Henry Cavill would be the right choice. Also it would be an interesting part for him, seeing how Luke is kinda an asshole. And as for Andrew? He is 10 years older than Ani, so it would have to be someone close to his 40s, who looks kind and warm. I want to type Paul Rudd again. But it needs to be someone taller. I'm thinking Chris Hemsworth but he is Cavill's age. But hey, he would fit the part.

  •  There is a bunch of new Macbeth photos and 2 posters. Why is Weinstein more focused on promoting JLaw's new DOR movie instead of this?
  •  Hey, speaking of JLaw - she is writing a script with Amy Schumer and they will star in a movie based on that script. Is there some sort of a magnet that unfunny vulgar people have that pushes them towards other unfunny vulgar people? If so, where is the news of Lena Dunham also "writing" with them? Just get Lars von Trier to direct and this will dethrone Kick Ass as the worst movie ever for me, easily.
  • Oh God.
  • The awfulness.
  • I can actually feel it coming.
  • This week Quentin Tarantinocompared her to Bette Davis. Oh God. I feel nauseous.
  • Somebody called Haley Bennett is gonna play the role of Megan in The Girl on the Train. At first I went "who?" but maybe that girl is gonna do well. This is certainly the most mysterious part out of the 3 women in the story. But what's worth noting here is the ridiculous first comment under this news. Um, because all three characters are white. Period.
  • The film pre production stage is moving so fast and we still don't have any news about Sharp Objects adaptation moving along. I'm telling you, it's that Gone Girl curse happening again.
  • Hey, speaking of ridiculous - Mr. Robot fansare throwing a gigantic hissy fit because the show's finale was postponed. The network pushed it a week because it contains similarities to that horrific shooting that was caught on shooter's cam this week. People are dead, can these "fans" just shut up?
  • So now Man of Steel 2 is on hold. You know more than Cavill in a tight suit I just want more Mad Max films. But honestly if they are putting this on hold so that Batman has more to do...the characters aren't a problem. Zack "the hack" Snyder is.
  • I tried to watch Queen of Earth on VOD the day it was released and had my credit card ready and everything and then it turns out it's not available in Itunes store in my location so I was not allowed to  pay 7 bucks to see it and buy it from US located Itunes store. And, and people dare to wonder why streaming sites for free are so popular? Get your shit together, VOD services and make it possible for me and others to give you our money. Also what the fuck does it matter that I'm paying from one location and getting something from other country's store? How come I can order a fuckload of clothes from UK and they arrive just fine but I cannot watch a damn movie online for a fee, just because I live in what may not be perceived as one, but seriously is a third world country? Why doesn't Itunes have international store with the same shit for everyone in the first place? Isn't Internet international? I mean - what the hell?!
  • On the bright side, Michelle Pfeifferis working again! This is wonderful news.
  • Would you look at this Kristen Stewart photoshoot? It looks like a cross between It Follows and Blade Runner. I got turned on just typing those words:
  • New AHS news! Here and here - and in the second link we can see the first pictures of the cast. I'm loving the look of Sarah Paulson and Angela Bassett in particular. Also - Ten commandments killer and addiction demon wielding a dildo? This is wild.
  • Speaking of wild - I think Tom Hardy might have just cause a chain explosin of ovaries with these dubsmash videos
  •  The Revenant finally wrapped so he will probably shave soon. NOOOOOOO!
  • I wasn't at work at all this week. My doctor sent me on a sick leave on account of my nerves actually giving me physical problems. So I have been chillin', playing with Gustav and continuing with my rewatch of Desperate Housewives. I have to go back on Monday, though, so let's just hope nothing terrible happens. Especially on next Friday since it's my birthday and my birthday is usually on a day when something bad happens.
  • Does anyone absolutely adore Karl? I know he cheated on Susan but he is the funniest character on the show.
  • That dinner Susan had with doctor Ron and Karl sent him to Mike was so freaking funny.
  • Watching the show and rewatching Friends from time to time really makes me think that TV is not in golden age nowadays as everyone seems to think. There are just no more shows that are so funny and touching at the same time. Yes, we had Parks and Rec, but that's gone.
  • Also speaking of TV - there is this new show Show me a Hero, I think, that's the title, and it seems to be getting amazing reviews but I never see anyone tweet about it or write about it on the blogs. Is anyone watching it? Is it really this awesome?

  •  It's my birthday. 26th. I'm spending it Swanson style - whiskey, movie and to sprinkle with just enough of my kookiness since I don't like sweet things instead of my birthday cake I'm having my birthday pizza.
  • God, I'm so old. I should probably freeze my eggs or something.
  • To give myself a final treat I dyed my hair new color - dark at the roots and blonde at the ends. And today after I came home Gustav was wearing a gigantic celebration bow!
  • This week twitter exploded with outrage. Seriously, I saw angry tweets about this topic every few seconds the topic being that the writer of the next James Bond book said Idris Elba is .... "too street" to play Bond.
  •  ...
  • WHAT THE FUCK?!
  • And this isn't even the most ridiculous news this week.
  • No, friends. The most ridiculous news is that Terminator Genisys made more money worldwide than Mad Max: Fury Road
  • For shame, world. For shame.
  • Would you look at that first poster for Spectre? I mean...what the shit is that?
  • Next to that we have new AHS poster depicting a variation of what we will see in the show and is that demon with that dildo drill thing or whatever. It looks...interesting.
  •  Redmayne. You bitch. That Danish Girltrailer. It is shaping up to be one of the most shameless Oscar baits I've seen - Redmayne with the look on his face like he just saw that 2 Oscar on horizon, Vikander with her ridiculous "nominate me!" tears, that whole sentimental music crapfest,... For the love of God, don't give this people any Oscars
  • So Venice film festival! We officially began the Oscar season. We have a flood of reviews for highly anticipated movies  and the trend is that Variety raves and THR writes snarky, purposefully mean "reviews". The case of Legend illustrates it best. Hardy is both getting compared to Jeremy Irons in Dead Ringers in one and slammed with "one of his worst performances in the other. Also  apparently Depp is very good in Black Mass, but the movie is not as good as his performance. The best reviews, at least out of those I read, went to Beasts of no Nation, again with that street beast Elba. The film really looks fantastic so it's great for us it's gonna hit VOD soon. There's also an intense new trailer.
  • We got our first trailer for The Lobster which looks incredibly unique and fun
  • Tom Hardy and his wife Charlotte - along with Tom's dog Woody - attended Legend premiere this week
  • This is just adorable:
  •  And this:
  • What's more adorable is that Charlotte is pregnant! Tom Hardy's genes are spreading....oh that is beautiful. Look at Tom just touching her continuously:
  • Yep. I've got nothing.
  • I did mange to see Queen of Earth this week. I have a great review ready - it's deep, insightful and personal. But I cannot publish it yet because I cannot decipher that ending. Usually it's just that I'm not sure but I have some theory about a confusing scene, that i believe enough to actually share it. But here? I've got nothing.
  •  I also saw Tale of Tales. It was so incredibly bizarre - Italians have some seriously fucked up fairy tales. The film was very uneven and way too long but it had some amazing performances - especially Shirley Handerson who currently makes my best supporting actress line up
  • However as you can see there are such amazing visuals in the movie. Amazing enough one of those is the new header on the blog.
  •   I've been gifing my favorite epsiodes of Desperate Housevives as I rewatch the show. These are wildly unpopular but they are so much fun to make!

Hit me with your best shot - Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road is not only the only action movie in the world I'd call a masterpiece, a higher form of art all by its own, a crazed, beautiful ballet of violence and fight for survival but it's easily one of the most gorgeous movies ever made. To pick up a shot, a single shot that is the best in the film basically built out of incredible shots loaded with tons of meaning was not easy. Fury Road has a beautiful story and several wonderful relationships between characters often times encapsulated in the look in their eyes or in the composition of the shot. So I decided to go with the shot that shows so much of the film's most magnificent character - Furiosa, of its story and captures something action movies are not known for - depth and melancholy.

But before I get to talk about the shot I picked, let's appreciate the runner ups.
This is the film that has been in our cinematic lives for merely few months and yet shots like this one:

    or this one:

are already there in cinematic history. They are instantly recognizable not just because of the movie's unique look but also because when you see those shots while watching the film, you're just hit with so much power the movie loaded them up with.

Then there are straight up action shots, so astonishing that you are just too impressed to even try to wonder how the hell did they managed to shoot that:

There's Brothers in Arms sequence, my favorite one in the movie which features this amazing moment:

Then there is this moment, and just for this moment Theron should be getting nominated left and right. Her entire performance is astonishing and worthy of hall of fame along with Linda Hamilton and Sigourney Weaver but here, when Furiosa remembers the gesture from home and looks like a little girl, back when she was happy... Ripley and Connor are badass but it's Furiosa who wins when you think of how much emotion was written into this character and how beautiful her heart is.

    Then there are these moments:

I'd write about them but I'm in a glass case of emotion right now and about the explode under the sheer power or Max and Furiosa' relationship.

But the shot I picked is this:

It just hit me so hard in the cinema I legit gasped. And normally, if Mad Max :Fury Road wasn't such a great blend of in your face and profound, I'd find the symbolism in that scene - the girls holding the lantern in the darkness, with worried Furiosa in the foreground - a bit much. But I can't because it's just so brilliant and there's nothing cliche or simple about what that shot has to say.

There, through a single visual, we know everything - we see worried Furiosa, seemingly crushing under the burden she took onto herself - not just escaping, but being the one who is the source of hope for these girls she liberated. But Furiosa needn't worry - it's these girls who are on their own a source of hope. The good and courageous who want to be free. Even though they spent their lives in servitude, having their body treated like property, much like Furiosa who was abducted and made into a soldier, these women never relinquished their innocence and goodness and they never let the evil, the corruption and the violence tarnish their souls. They asked Furiosa to help them and Furiosa, who is truly a wonderful action heroine, risks everything to lead them into safety. Even when she is on the verge of death her only heartbreaking words show her innocence in her destination - HOME. Whatever happens, just get them HOME.

It is this amazing amount of heart and qualities so often associated with women that actually makes Furiosa stand out and stand above even those of the most iconic female characters - Theron's Furiosa shows fear - when she does what she intended and changes the course of the Rig. She shows sadness - when Max tells her the girl went under the wheels. And she is not afraid to ask for help when she needs Max to drive the wheel. Even after years of slavery, Furiosa can show trust, hope and forgiveness. And the same goes for the girls she is saving.

And in this shot the hope burns - in the lantern and in Furiosa's eyes. The world was killed, but there are still things out there that makes the good ones go on.

  •  Tom Hardy is gonna be on Chatty Man tonight and there is a clip from it online:
  • My ovaries will paint the walls red.
  • Surely everyone is familiar with the famous Tom Hardy's myspace pics? He talked about them lately. Oh God. I want to live in that natural habitat.
  • Also the new poster for Legend is so clever in hiding that dumb Guardian 2 star-review
  • Word is out that they are finally going ahead with Bridget Jones 3 and that Zellweger and Colin Firth are returning. But that's not all as apparently McDreamy is gonna show up too. I just hope Bridget's friends and parents return. They are such a big part of the charm of the first one and the good enough appeal of the sequel.
  •  I'm gonna get all political on you now. We have this immigrant flood here in Europe and I seriously cannot believe that ultra liberal media brainwashed people so much that all it takes is a picture of a dead child for people who want to take immigrants in to call those who don't Nazis.
  • Instead of helping these people there on their land the EU is saying 'come!' and is actually letting them in. Not just the refugees - everyone. The members of foreign, oppressive culture. In Hungary they are throwing feces at the cars. In Poland one of the families who got a job and money from our government fled overnight without a word because they wanted more money, so off to Germany they ran. Look, by all means, if someone is fleeing from war, take that person in. But how come most of these people aren't from the land where there is war? And where are women and children because what I'm seeing is a guy who after got to Hungary, a land where there is no war, and was told he won't go to Germany, where the social security is better, grabbed a woman holding a baby and thrown himself on the rails along with her.
  • As horrible as the picture of the boy who drowned is, it's just astounding to me that some ignore that A. this boy was from Turkey, where there is no war and B. the majority of those so called refugees are young, healthy men, not children. Also what the fuck with these young men with their smart phones being here instead of over there? If war broke in my country young men would fight. The patriotism to the point of being suicidal is one of my countrymen main traits.
  • EU is now a life raft and they are violently shaking it. We will all drown. We had war here. We finally don't. I wish my country had balls - don't force us to take them in, or we are out of your shitty EU. I hope UK finally leaves that useless organization, that would be a big blow to it.
  • So if you are watching the news and thinking "oh, this is bad", trust me, it will get a lot worse.
  • But getting back to the movies while I'm still able to see them....
  • I had to change my acting line up again as Theron is now my winner for playing Furiosa. And yes, I'm gonna be watching the movie again tonight.
  • This moment, my God. She's magnificent:
  • We have our first cast trailer for American Horror Story: Hotel. It looks awesome so far.
  • The new Spectre poster is only marginally less awful than the first one and that's solely because this time around they added Lea Seydoux. Meanwhile there is another beautiful poster for Brooklyn:
  •  Idris Elba tweeted something really cute on his birthday:
  • Zack Snyder is not only a hack. He is also a bitch. He didn't even see Ant-Man and he still dissed it. Well Zack, I saw Sucker Punch. And it was fucking terrible. So maybe never talk or direct films again.
  • Meanwhile Marvel is eyeling Rebecca Ferguson for that Captain Marvel movie. I'm not happy about this. Marvel is terrible when it comes to female characters. The writing for women in their movies makes Chris Nolan's female characters look like wonderfully written, complex people. Just look what they've done with Black Widow in recent Avengers. Ferguson is a terrifically talented actress and she deserves better. When a man is cast in Marvel flick that's great because it will bring him more exposure, but male characters are infinitely better written than women in these films. My God, they got Julie Delpy for Ultron and she was in that movie for about 15 seconds.
  • So Thrones news - Essie Davis just joined the cast as an actress in the troup. It doesn't look like a major part, but it's so cool the actors that are joining are really recognizable names. Though I must say it's adding insult to the injury that after Dillane is gone from the show they cast two of his co-stars - McShane from 44 Inch Chest and now Essie from Kings in the Grass Castles
